OHRG HEADED TO CHAMPS!

OHIO TO PLAY AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! After coming so close last season to their first ever trip to the WFTDA Championship tournament, the Ohio Roller Girls have clinched a spot at the big dance in November. At the end of each season, the WFTDA holds four Division I tournaments to determine which teams will advance to Champs. The four Division I playoffs were held this year at Ft. Wayne (IN), Richmond (VA), Asheville (NC), and Salem (OR). Using an s-curve ranking system, the top 40 teams in the WFTDA were placed into one of the four above mentioned locations. At each tournament location, the top three finishers would earn a trip to the Championship tournament in November held in Milwaukee (WI). How did the Ohio Roller Girls do it? They came into Ft. Wayne as the #6 seed and upset #3 Arch Rival. OHRG then upset #2 Montreal before losing to #1 Denver in the final bout. The fantastic showing earned the Ohio Roller Girls a #2 seed at Champs. #6 OHIO COLLAPSES #3 ARCH RIVAL 218-166 The Smacktivist scores 103 points OHRG and Arch Rival have a storied history against one another, with the overall record against one another at 2-2. CRG AND A2D2 INVADE COLUMBUS

This Saturday, the #24 Ohio Roller Girls will look to exact revenge on the only squad to defeat them in the regular season last year when OHRG amassed a WFTDA record-setting 21-1 win/loss total.  The sole blemish in the loss column for Ohio came at the hands, and skates, of the Carolina Rollergirls midway through last year at Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.  In that bout, Ohio was missing two key players in Phoenix Bunz and HellionBOI, as Kitty Liquorbottom wore the star nearly every other jam.  As the final whistle blew in Raleigh, the Carolina Rollergirls took the win by a mere 15 points.  The 15 point loss could have been considered a moral victory for Ohio, as OHRG jammers were only able to obtain lead status 12 times out of the bout’s 43 jams.  A rematch was inevitable and the only question left unanswered would be if the follow-up bout would be just as exciting as the original. Both Ohio and Carolina have already earned post-season berths, as the points earned in this bout will go toward next year’s rankings.  Ohio will play in Ft. (24) Ohio Defeats (32) Syndicate

The (24) Ohio Roller Girls played a tune-up bout against the (32) Chicago Outfit Syndicate this past weekend before they head out for a difficult road bout against Steel City on August 10th.  Historically, OHRG is 1-2 against the Syndicate, first suffering a loss at Chicago in 2010 (172-34), then again at the 2011 BrewHaHa tournament (68-147) before redeeming themselves at home in 2012 (164-97).  This past weekend’s 273-106 drubbing over the Chicago Outfit took Ohio’s record to 13-5 this season with two bouts to go before they head to Ft. Wayne (IN) for the WFTDA Division I playoffs in September.  The Chicago Outfit will also compete in Division I post-season play, but a little further west in Salem (OR). The Ohio Roller Girls took the lead on the first jam and never looked back, thanks to clock-eating power jams and a staunch, powerful defense.  Ohio’s Phoenix Bunz scored the first four points of the bout before Lola Blow cut the OHRG lead in half 2-4 on the next jam.  Three double-digit jams over the next five outings saw the Ohio lead skyrocket quickly to 73-15 after only nine minutes.  During that time, Ohio received three power jams and saw The

(20) Ohio Outduels (16) Detroit 196-147

Depending on which ranking system you looked at Saturday morning, either the (#23 DNN, #20 WFTDA) Ohio Roller Girls or (#24 DNN, #16 WFTDA) Detroit Derby Girls could have been considered the underdog in search of an upset against their opponent.  Historically, Detroit has had Ohio’s number, posting a 3-0 record over the ladies from Columbus.  Unfortunately, you can’t have a rivalry if one team always wins.  The Ohio Roller Girls broke the streak and snatched their first ever victory over the visitors from Motown this weekend 196-147 to secure their second victory over a higher ranked team this season. In one of the best bouts of the season, those at the Ohio Building saw seven lead changes, a jam that included a star pass and four jammer penalties, and Detroit’s Racer McChaseHer get through the pack on her initial pass after losing two wheels on her left skate.  Both teams had something to prove after BrewHaHa where Detroit dropped two bouts to Windy City and Arch Rival, and Ohio suffered a big loss at the hands of Minnesota.  With only one more ranking released before playoffs, it was obvious from the start that both squads were ready to leave everything

(20) OHIO ROLLER GIRLS SPLIT AT MIDWEST BREWHAHA

The (20) Ohio Roller Girls traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this past weekend to take part in the fourth annual Midwest BrewHaHa tournament hosted by the Brewcity Bruisers.  OHRG have participated at BrewHaHa all four years and, including this year, have amassed a 5-3 record at the annual event.  This year, Ohio split their weekend with a convincing defeat of (59) Pikes Peak 387-64, but lost to the (10) Minnesota RollerGirls 340-102. (20) OHIO DEFEATS (59) PIKES PEAK DERBY DAMES 387-64 Kitty Liquorbottom scores 110 points, The Smacktivist adds 104. Ohio’s first opponent this past weekend was the Pikes Peak Derby Dames (PPDD) from Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Along with Ohio (and their next opponent Minnesota), Pikes Peak were original WFTDA members back in 2005.  Entering their bout with Ohio, PPDD were ranked #59 and had a 1-3 record including a non-sanctioned bout against Rocky Mountain. PPDD's lone victory was against Ark Valley and their three setbacks were to teams all ranked considerably higher than them (Rocky Mountain, No Coast, and Arch Rival). The weekend's losses to both Arch Rival and Ohio at BrewHaHa could potentially knock PPDD out of the Division II playoffs as only the teams ranked #40-#60 make the playoffs. Ohio opened the

Ohio Defeats Tampa Bay 273-119, Falls to Atlanta 186-247

Before you read the recaps from OHRG's visit to Atlanta, check out this killer highlight reel: Ohio Defeats Tampa Bay 273-119 Only a few positions in the WFTDA rankings separated the (19 DNN, 23 WFTDA) Ohio Roller Girls and the (28 WFTDA) Tampa Bay Derby Darlins, but after sixty minutes of play, that gap seemed much wider.  In their first of two bouts of the day, OHRG caused twice as many power jams as their opponents and skated toward their matinee with Atlanta with a decisive 273-119 victory over Tampa.  In the process, Phoenix Bunz posted her third 100+ point bout of the season as she put up 121 of Ohio’s 273 points. While Bunz’s point total is impressive, the defining factor of the bout was Ohio’s pack.  Time and time again, Loraine Acid, Outa My Wayman, and Bratislava Bruiser would knock Tampa’s jammer out-of-bounds, retreat, and draw a track cut.  Ohio’s physical pack play seemed to cause problems for Tampa, as star jammer Little A missed significant time in both the first and second half due to hard Ohio blocks. (23) Ohio Welcomes the Blue Ridge Rollergirls; Game Moved to Lausche Building

This Saturday, the (23) Ohio Roller Girls welcome the Blue Ridge Rollergirls All-Stars from Asheville, North Carolina.  Also in action, Gang Green will lace their skates against Blue Ridge’s reserve squad, the French Broads.  Currently posting a record of 7-2 during their 2013 campaign, the Ohio Roller Girls are thankful to be back on their home track after playing three consecutive bouts on the road, two of which were against teams ranked ahead of them in the WFTDA standings. After defeating higher ranked Steel City at home in early April, OHRG traveled 1,050 miles as they visited River City (Richmond, VA) and (13) Charm City (Baltimore, MD).  The Ohioans were victorious against River City, but lost by an even 100 points to Charm City after being tied at halftime. This past weekend, Ohio upped their mileage again by traveling 836 miles to play the (12) Arch Rival Roller Girls (St. Louis, MO).  Missing key players Ava Tarr and Kill Basa, OHRG found it difficult to claim a road victory as they fell 108-179 this past weekend.  Bolstered by the return of Outa My Wayman as a full-time All Star player, the Ohio squad looks to get back to their winning ways this

OHRG Goes 1-1 on the Road

The (23) Ohio Roller Girls ended their 1,050 mile road trip with a decisive victory at Richmond (VA) over River City’s Poe’s Punishers 278-68, and with a disheartening loss in Baltimore (MD) to the (12) Charm City All-Stars 132-232. (23) OHRG DEFEATS RIVER CITY 278-68; THE SMACKTIVIST SCORES 115 POINTS Under the new divisional system the WFTDA has established this season, the Ohio Roller Girls are comfortably within the top 40 teams that make up Division I.  Currently ranked #75, River City is in Division II, needing to climb as high as #40 in order to qualify for the Division I playoffs.  A victory, or close loss, would have moved River City closer to that divisional cutoff.  The dreams of an upset over higher-ranked Ohio would not be in the cards for Poe’s Punishers as OHRG dominated the bout both physically, on the penalty board, and - most importantly - on the scoreboard. Ohio started the bout quickly as The Smacktivist scored the first of many double-digit jams throughout the contest, a twelve-pointer in the second jam that gave Ohio the lead 15-1.  Points were at a premium over the next six jams, but OHRG continued to lead 22-7 with 22:15 remaining in

Gang Green Splits Road Trip

Playing with a short roster, Gang Green broke even with a record-breaking 448-40 win against River City’s Uncivil Warriors and a slim loss to Charm City’s Female Trouble 185-200. GANG GREEN DEFEATS THE RIVER CITY UNCIVIL WARRIORS 448-40; ELEKTRA MAGNETO (117) AND BIGG RIGG (104) BOTH ECLIPSE CENTURY MARK In an attempt to salvage a victory in front of their home crowd, the River City Uncivil Warriors took the track against Ohio’s Gang Green in the second bout of the afternoon.  Much like the charter team who played before them, Gang Green was nearly perfect as they not only scored the most points by any team to ever play in the Greater Richmond Convention Center, but they also scored the most points in Gang Green team history.  During their 448-40 win, Gang Green had two jammers eclipse the century mark (Elektra Magneto with 117 and Bigg Rigg with 104), which is another first for either Gang Green or for Ohio’s charter team. Gang Green obtained lead on the bout’s first three jams.  Two consecutive jammer penalties to River City’s Barbie Beretta and Cindy Boo Who lead to jams of thirty-five, twenty-five, and twenty points for Bigg Rigg, Paige Bleed, and Elektra Magneto respectively.
