OHIO BRINGS THE HEAT AGAINST BUFFALO’S LAKE EFFECT FURIES, 239-109

After the last few games away from home, the Ohio Roller Girls were happy to return to the Lausche Building to take on Queen City Roller Girls’ Lake Effect Furies from Buffalo, NY.  The last time these two teams faced off, the Furies found themselves on the losing end. While Ohio is ranked #22 in the WFTDA to Buffalo's #48, OHRG were still prepared to meet strong opposing players from northern New York. With The Smacktivist up against Queen City’s Librawlian in the first jam, it could have been a strong start for either team.  Mack was able to take lead and the first four points of the game before calling the jam off.  Thanks to smart blocking by Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin, Burnadeath, and Ena Flash, that four point lead would only increase, never allowing space for a lead change.  In fact, it took until the fifth jam for Queen City to get on the scoreboard, courtesy of Librawlian. Queen City took lead jammer status for the majority of the first half. (22) OHIO WELCOMES BUFFALO’S (48) QUEEN CITY ROLLER GIRLS

GET TICKETS TO TOMORROW'S BOUT HERE. The (22) Ohio Roller Girls had something this past week that they haven’t had in quite a while… a week off.  Coming off a three bout stint in Boston two weeks ago, OHRG will be back within the friendly confines of the Lausche Building as they welcome in Buffalo’s Queen City Roller Girls this Saturday evening.  Our Columbus squad returned from Massachusetts with a 2-1 weekend record as they upset (11) Boston 223-190, defeated New Hampshire 208-100, and nearly upset (12) Montreal 196-164 (note: following last weekend, the new rankings were released and Boston and Montreal are now ranked #17 and #16 respectively).  Overall, the Ohio Roller Girls All Stars are 7-5 in 2014. The Queen City Roller Girls will make the 5.5 hour drive to Columbus this weekend before they too enter the final stretch of their 2014 season.  The Lake Effect Furies will also have a little revenge on their minds, as they were defeated by the Ohio Roller Girls last year in Toronto at the Quad City Chaos tournament, 211-125.  Although the point differential at the end of that bout was 86 points, Queen City trailed Ohio by only 24 points halfway through

(20) OHRG DEFEATS (30) MADISON, FALLS TO (9) WINDY CITY

The Ohio Roller Girls managed to take their season record to 5-4 while competing at Midwest BrewHaHa by splitting bouts this past weekend.  Their victory over the Mad Rollin’ Dolls of Madison, Wisconsin, and loss to the Windy City Rollers of Chicago put their overall BrewHaHa record to 6-4.    (20) OHIO SPOILS BREWHAHA FOR THE (30) DAIRYLAND DOLLS 226-182 For their first bout of the weekend, the Ohio Roller Girls were paired against a familiar foe in (30) Madison’s Dairyland Dolls.  Although Ohio had defeated Madison in their previous two match-ups, both were very close bouts with the OHRG winning by 20 and 26 points respectively.  The contest at BrewHaHa lived up to the previous match-ups, as both squads played extremely physical on both offense and defense.  The bout started well for Ohio as The Smacktivist posted an 8-0 jam over Madison veteran Mouse.  Points were sparse over the next five jams until a 7 point jam by Madison’s Magic Missile gave the Dairyland Dolls their first lead, 15-11.  Madison wouldn’t have time to enjoy that lead as Ohio’s Jesse "Ava Tarr" Fox, Amy Spears, Lora "Outa My" Wayman, and Zee "Loraine Acid" Gulertekin paved the way for Kitty Liquorbottom’s 24-0

OHIO FAILS TO BRING HOME TOWN WIN AGAINST ATLANTA, 117-261

Just days prior to the Ohio Roller Girls All Stars facing off against the Atlanta Rollergirls Dirty South Derby Girls, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association released updated April rankings.  While Ohio held their place at #20, Atlanta fell five spots to #15.  When the two teams played last year, they were slightly farther apart in ranking, with Ohio at #23 and Atlanta at #15.  As Ohio has proven before, rankings alone can't predict a game's outcome. After last year’s away game loss to Atlanta of 186-247, could Ohio turn the tables at home? The Smacktivist took the jammer line for Ohio first, matched up against Jammunition from Atlanta. With the help from blockers like Queen Loseyateefa and Switchblade Siouxsie frustrating Ohio’s players, Atlanta was able to draw first blood.  They put 33 points on the board in the first few jams, despite hard defensive work from Ohio blockers such as Jesse “Ava Tarr” Fox and Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin. OHIO FALLS JUST SHORT IN INDY, 140-163

At the end of Saturday's bout in Indianapolis, the announcer proclaimed it “the most exciting bout” the Naptown Tornado Sirens had all year. Unfortunately, it was not as exciting as the Ohio Roller Girls (4-2) would have liked. Penalties were nearly Ohio's salvation: Naptown (5-1) accrued thirty-one of them, against just eighteen for Ohio. But like the proverbial double-edged sword, it was penalties at key moments in the bout that led to Ohio's doom. Naptown stormed out of the gates, running up a 39-8 tally in the first ten jams. Ohio stopped the bleeding behind power jams by Kitty Liquorbottom and The Smacktivist, then climbed back into the game by hard-fought increments. An eighteen-point, five-on-two power jam by Zee "Loraine Acid" Gulertekin brought Ohio within eleven points with just under two minutes left in the first half, but Siren jammer Maiden America finished off the half two jams later with a nine-point run, and Naptown led 83-67 at the half. OHIO VICTORIOUS OVER TRI-CITY THUNDER, 225-142

This past Saturday was the third time that the Ohio Roller Girls have matched up against Tri-City Roller Derby’s Tri-City Thunder from Kitchener, Ontario. OHRG recognized early on that they had some tough opponents in players like Tri-City veterans Wylde Leigh Cyote and Fox Smoulder. As evidenced by their strong 2013 playoffs performance, Tri-City had been working hard since the two teams last saw each other, but unfortunately for the Canadian team, Ohio had been doing the same. Right out of the gate, Ohio took the lead with The Smacktivist scoring the first two points of the game in the first jam. Ohio would continue to add a few points here and there for the majority of the first half. Ohio jammers found themselves trying to catch up to fast-moving packs with the Tri-City jammers hot on their tail.  OHRG blockers weren’t having it any easier, finding themselves fighting some tough hits and strong walls courtesy of players like Fraxxure and Aggrosaurus. Ohio managed to maintain a steady lead despite growing penalty trouble, although the persistent pack disadvantage eventually caught up to them. (22) OHIO WELCOMES (41) TRI-CITY ROLLER DERBY FOR INTERNATIONAL BOUT

  Fresh off their 2-1 performance at Quad City Chaos hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, the Ohio Roller Girls will host their second home bout of the season against, well, more Canadians!  After splitting bouts with the #1 and #2 ranked teams in Canada, Ohio will try their luck against the third best team north of the border, Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener, ON), on Saturday, April 5th, at the Lausche Building.  Historically, the Ohio Roller Girls are 9-1 against international teams, including a 2-0 record against Tri-City.  The two teams last met in May 2012 when Ohio was victorious 159-113.  Prior to that, Ohio also took the win in June 2011, 131-76.    The Ohio Roller Girls will have the advantage coming into this weekend’s bout, having already played four bouts in the 2014 season.  They were victorious in the season opener against Nashville 194-128, and secured two additional victories at Quad City Chaos against Bleeding Heartland (Bloomington, IN) 291-93, and Toronto 185-172.  Their lone loss this season was to the Montreal New Skids on the Block 385-158.  Ohio will feature The Smacktivist and Kitty Liquorbottom on the jammer line, as both played tremendously well at Quad City Chaos.  For their efforts

OHRG ALL STARS TAKE HOME WINS, LOSS AT QUAD CITY CHAOS

Ohio vs. New Skids on the Block (Montreal, QC) Ohio first met Montreal in 2009 and then again in 2013 during playoffs. Both of those meetings landed Ohio with wins over the New Skids on the Block despite Montreal’s higher ranking.  Going into Quad City Chaos this weekend, it looked as though it could go either way based on the history.  One thing was certain, of course: neither team was going to go down without a fight. It didn’t look good from the start for OHRG, though.  With jammer The Smacktivist earning a track cut penalty in the first jam, Montreal was able to start off strong. In that first power jam Mel-E-Juana scored 19 points and Montreal barely looked back.  Penalty trouble continued for OHRG throughout the first half and into the second.  Ohio skaters spent a total of 38 penalty minutes to Montreal’s 26 throughout the two periods. With the score at the half 169-96 in favor of Montreal, Ohio came back with a few power jams to start the second half off a bit stronger. They couldn’t seem to make up the point difference with their continued penalty trouble and the game ended 385-158.  The good news for Ohio is

OHIO BRINGS HOME FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AGAINST NASHVILLE, 194-128

It's been over six months since Columbus got to see the Ohio Roller Girls play a home bout. August was the last time OHRG graced the Ohio Expo Center before tournament season and, if you missed it, what a tournament season it was! OHRG won two out of three playoffs games, which earned them their very first trip to Championships in November. After a great 2013 and a lot of hard work in the off-season, OHRG was ready to hit their hometown track on March 8th to start the 2014 season off right. For the season opener, OHRG welcomed the Nashville Rollergirls Music City All Stars. The two teams last played against each other in 2010, with Ohio falling to Nashville. Four years later, Ohio wasn’t going down so easily. Ohio started out the first half with a strong mix of veterans jamming, including Kitty Liquorbottom,  The Smacktivist, and Bratislava Bruiser. They gained immediate advantage over Nashville, including the first power jam of the game going to Lora “Outa My” Wayman, but they didn’t stay ahead for long.  After five lead changes, Nashville jammers, including Ann T.
