THE ROC STARS’ 2016 TOUR INCLUDES COLUMBUS

The old saying goes, “If the music’s too loud, you’re too old.” Well, the Ohio Roller Derby will be looking to make some noise of their own this weekend as they welcome in the Roc Stars of Roc City Roller Derby (Rochester, NY). In the first contest of the evening, the #36 Ohio Roller Derby will be putting a 16 game home win streak on the line as they also play for a spot in the Division 1 Playoffs in September. A good showing from the home team will solidify OHRD in the top 40, rather than dropping them down in to Division 2. If Ohio keeps their #36 rank throughout this month, that would be good enough for a 9-seed in the playoffs, pitting them against an 8-seed in the first round (with the winner moving on to play the 1-seed in the next round). Ohio, currently sporting a 6-1 record in their 2016 campaign, only have the Roc City bout remaining on their schedule before the final Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rankings come out and seed teams for playoffs. (37) OHIO OFFERS SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY AS (65) CAROLINA VISITS THE 614

This weekend, the Carolina Roller Girls invade Columbus as their All-Stars attempt to snap Ohio’s fifteen game home win streak. It’ll be a tough task for the team from Raleigh, North Carolina, as Ohio Roller Derby has defeated their three home opponents this season (Ann Arbor, Ithaca, and Tri-City) by an average of 162 points. Historically, Ohio holds a 1-1 record against the Carolina All-Stars. They first met back in Raleigh in 2012 where Carolina took a slim victory, 125-110. Ohio was able to get revenge on Carolina the following year in Columbus, when the home squad convincingly won 432-29. Recently, Ohio has been able to jump back into the top 40 after climbing four spaces after the last WFTDA rankings release. Conversely, Carolina also saw a five position climb to #65, as they attempt to land between #40-60 in order to play in the Division 2 Playoffs in August. Carolina is 3-1 in their 2016 campaign, with a three game win streak coming into Columbus. They started their season with a loss to Jet City (217-140), but rolled off three wins over three days at the K-Town Shakedown hosted by the Killamazoo Derby Darlins earlier this month. Tri-City Stamps Their Passports To Visit Ohio

This Saturday, the Ohio Roller Derby hosts Tri-City Roller Derby from Kitchener, Ontario, in a battle as both squads look to make the jump back into Division 1. In WFTDA, teams ranked 1-40 fall into the Division 1 playoff structure at the end of the season, with teams between 41-60 placed in the Division 2 playoffs. Ohio, currently ranked #41 after the most recent WFTDA rankings release, should jump back into the 30s next month as they look to continue their presence in the Division 1 postseason. Tri-City is currently ranked #47 and needs some favorable outcomes over the next few months to work their way back into the top 40. Currently 2-1 in their 2016 campaign, the Tri-City Thunder opened the season as a participant at Quad City Chaos, a weekend invitational hosted by Toronto Roller Derby in mid-March. At Quad City Chaos, the Thunder were victorious over Roller Derby Quebec 193-139, and against the Toronto All Stars 207-158. The Thunder’s lone setback at Chaos was against the Queen City Roller Girls, 209-71, a team they’ll have a rematch with in May at the Tri-City-hosted Beaver Fever Invitational. OHIO ROLLER DERBY GOES 2-0 OVER ITHACA LEAGUE OF WOMEN ROLLERS

In their first-ever matchup against the Ithaca League of Women Rollers, Ohio Roller Derby posted back-to-back wins, bringing the season record to 2-0 for both the All Stars and Gang Green. (31) OHIO ALL STARS FLATTEN (77) ITHACA SUFFERJETS, 312-59 Riding the momentum from their victorious home season opener two weeks ago, Ohio Roller Derby’s All Stars looked to clinch another win against Ithaca’s SufferJets, and was able to do just that by locking down defense and obtaining 67% of lead jammer statuses for the game. The first two jams would prove to be the closest of the game, as The Smacktivist gave Ohio a quick 4-0 lead that was immediately answered by 3 points from Ithaca jammer Rainbow Might. A skating out of bounds penalty on the Ithaca jammer in jam 3 gave Ohio their first power jam of the game, which Blitz Lemon used to put up 10 uncontested points. OHRD’s defensive core thwarted all scoring attempts by Ithaca for the next 7 minutes of gameplay while The Smacktivist, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, and Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin widened Ohio’s lead by an additional 15 points. Gang Green Muted by Warning Belles

Looking to take after their Charter Team counterparts, Ohio’s Gang Green also aimed to avenge an earlier season loss to Naptown.  Unfortunately for Gang Green, the season split was not to be, as Naptown’s Warning Belles were victorious, 181-129, in a bout that wasn’t quite decided until the final few jams.  The bout started strong for both teams as Naptown jammers Pirouette Threat, Scorpiopathic, and Lysis 2 Kill obtained lead status on five of the bout’s first six jams.  With that type of advantage, teams would typically rack up an abundance of points; however, Naptown was only able to capitalize minimally due to Gang Green’s strong defense.  Slammerhead, Garden of Beatin’, Adams and KloverKill bent but didn’t break as they allowed no more than four points each jam and only trailed 15-2 after six jams. Points were nickel-and-dimed for the majority of the bout as Gang Green jammers TactiGal, Karmabal Lector, HellionBOI, and Blitz Lemon basically matched those posted by their competitors.  With 7:00 remaining in the first half, Naptown held a slim three-point lead 41-38.  Strong defense by Warning Belles blockers Crash N2U, Eve Anne Hellical, and Flannery O’Clobber was then able to hold Karmabal Lector on her initial pass

GANG GREEN NEUTRALIZES BURNING RIVER’S HAZMAT CREW 219-84

As the Ohio Roller Girls celebrated their tenth anniversary this weekend, it was Gang Green that turned things up to eleven as they provided that little extra oomph during a 219-84 victory over visiting HazMat Crew, the reserve squad from Burning River Roller Derby.  Following what was a close bout during the first seven jams, Gang Green was able to capture the lead in the eighth jam and never look back.  Stout defense by Gang Green blockers Quiet Storm, NiCold N Deadly, Zinnia Zombie, and Garden of Beatin repeatedly held back HazMat jammers while opening holes for their own jammers throughout the first half. After finding themselves down 19-20 after jam seven, Val Holla put Gang Green ahead with a 9-0 jam of her own.  Toeing the inside line off the jam start in the next jam, KloverKill added an additional 4-0 to increase Gang Green’s lead to 32-20.  Powerful subsequent jamming by Gang Green’s HellionBOI, Karmabal Lector, and Blitz Lemon paired with even better blocking by Gang Green’s pack players enabled the home squad to go on a 48-5 run that spanned nine jams and thirteen minutes.  With 9:30 remaining in the first half, Gang Green held a 67-25 lead.

GANG GREEN TRUMPS THE DESTRUCTION DAMES 250-93

While it wasn’t as bad as Gang Green’s 308-70 victory over the Demolition City Destruction Dames earlier this season, the 250-93 defeat of the Dames in Columbus last weekend had pretty much the same feel.  At first it appeared Gang Green might have a battle on their hands as Demolition City kept the bout tight for the first five minutes thanks to charter team members Godjilla and Jetsy Rockette playing with the reserve squad.  However, a 17-0 jam by Blitz Lemon on the period’s sixth jam gave Gang Green a lead they would never relinquish.  Lemon would have a career bout as she led all scorers with 122 points, nearly half of Gang Green’s total, thus earning her Most Valuable Jammer for Gang Green. Equally as impressive as Lemon’s performance on the jammer line was the physical play by Gang Green’s pack.  In the first half, the Destruction Dames were able to obtain lead jammer ten times of the twenty-four jams.  Tough defensive Gang Green walls stymied Dames jammers, and more often than not, kept them on their initial pass.  With only 54 points at halftime for the Dames, Gang Green’s defense only allowed a 5+ point jam twice in the

GANG GREEN SPLITS BOUTS AT BREWHAHA

The fifth annual Midwest BrewHaHa is in the books and Ohio’s Gang Green left Milwaukee sporting a 1-1 tournament record to take their overall season mark to 4-4.  On Friday, Gang Green opened a decent lead against the host squad, Brewcity Battlestars, before fending off a late comeback. Gang Green then lost a tough battle with Madison, Wisconsin’s, B-Team on Saturday morning. GANG GREEN HOLDS ON TO BEAT THE BATTLESTARS 159-140 Hop Devil started the bout quickly for Ohio as she was able to get lead jammer and post a quick 11-0 jam against Violet Femme for Brewcity.  An Ally McSqueal track cut on jam five led to the first power jam of the contest.  Starting unopposed, Busty Guns scored eleven and created the bout’s first lead change, 20-18 Brewcity.  A steady Gang Green jammer rotation of Hop, Ally, and Blitz Lemon kept the deficit to single digits until TactiGal was able to force a back block on Battlestars’ jammer Mellon Collie on the fourteenth jam of the half.  Hop Devil took advantage for Gang Green and scored 13, swinging the scoreboard back to Ohio’s favor, 42-38.   Gang Green’s lead didn’t last long as two jams later, Brewcity’s defense was able to hold

GANG GREEN TAKEN DOWN BY NAPTOWN WARNING BELLES, 88-185

Ohio’s Gang Green started and ended strong against Indianapolis’s Naptown Warning Belles on Saturday. It was the middle part of the bout that caused them trouble. Gang Green jammer Hop Devil, who jammed thirteen times and won three leads (23%), breezed through the pack to gain the lead on the first jam. Nicold N Deadly (thirteen jams, five leads (38%)) overcame a low block on the second jam to gain a come-from-behind lead in the second, thanks to a stellar effort by her blockers to keep Belle jammer The Bitter End in the pack. TactiGal (six jams, three leads (50%)) followed with yet another lead on the third jam, and Hop Devil finished Ohio’s brief period of dominance by fighting off a forearm penalty to gain the lead in the fourth jam. I say “brief period” because the four jams combined netted a total of four points for Gang Green, and they were the last points Ohio would get for another six jams. GANG GREEN TAKES DOWN PLAN B (Kitchener, Ontario) 247-94

To Plan B, or not to Plan B… that was the question going into Saturday’s reserve squad battle between Ohio’s Gang Green and Tri-City’s Plan B.  The answer was simple as Gang Green brought strength, depth, and an overall dominant performance to the track as they soundly defeated the visitors 247-94.  Gang Green started slowly as Plan B took an early 8-7 lead going into the fourth jam.  A multiplayer block to Plan B’s Commander Will Wrecker allowed Blitz Lemon to score a 17-0 jam, thus creating the bout’s first (and only) lead change.  Lemon’s power jam was followed by a 14-0 jam by Hop Devil which took Gang Green’s lead to 38-8 with 22:30 remaining in the first period. A string of eight straight lead jammers for Gang Green allowed the home squad to go on an 86-4 run over Tri-City and extend their lead to 93-12.  The final jam of that run saw Gang Green’s pack force a track cut to Plan B’s Slaughterhouse Streeter, which put Blitz Lemon on yet another power jam.  Lemon took full advantage of a strong pack that was able to hold Streeter on her initial pass after being released from the box and
