GANG GREEN WINS A THRILLER WITH ANN ARBOR 151-142

The last time Gang Green took the track against the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes, they squandered a late lead and lost on the final jam to the A2D2 Brawlstars 220-207 in Milwaukee (WI).  In an exciting bout with six lead changes in the first half, it almost appeared history would repeat itself, but Gang Green pulled together and claimed the rematch 151-142 in front of 1000+ fans at the Lausche Building this past weekend.  The first half was a classic struggle between great Ann Arbor offense and great Gang Green defense.  Of the first half’s twenty-five jams, Ann Arbor was able to get lead jammer seventeen times compared to Gang Green’s eight.  That means A2D2 was able to control how long the jams would last twice as many times as their opponents.  However, it was Gang Green who held an 87-60 lead at the half! The bout started well as Gang Green’s Paige Bleed scored first for Ohio, a 1-0 jam.  The first lead change came two jams later as Ann Arbor’s Battlecat put the Brawlstars ahead 4-1.  The Derby Dimes’ lead didn’t last long as on the next jam, Gang Green’s Burnadeath posted 8 to reclaim the lead 9-4.  Three jams

CRG AND A2D2 INVADE COLUMBUS

This Saturday, the #24 Ohio Roller Girls will look to exact revenge on the only squad to defeat them in the regular season last year when OHRG amassed a WFTDA record-setting 21-1 win/loss total.  The sole blemish in the loss column for Ohio came at the hands, and skates, of the Carolina Rollergirls midway through last year at Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.  In that bout, Ohio was missing two key players in Phoenix Bunz and HellionBOI, as Kitty Liquorbottom wore the star nearly every other jam.  As the final whistle blew in Raleigh, the Carolina Rollergirls took the win by a mere 15 points.  The 15 point loss could have been considered a moral victory for Ohio, as OHRG jammers were only able to obtain lead status 12 times out of the bout’s 43 jams.  A rematch was inevitable and the only question left unanswered would be if the follow-up bout would be just as exciting as the original. Both Ohio and Carolina have already earned post-season berths, as the points earned in this bout will go toward next year’s rankings.  Ohio will play in Ft. (24) OHIO TRAVELS TO (18) STEEL CITY FOR REMATCH

On August 10th, the #24 Ohio Roller Girls will travel to Pittsburgh for the second half of a home-and-home series against perennial powerhouse #18 Steel City.  The road bout is Ohio’s final road trip this season before they travel to Ft. Wayne (IN) where they will compete against Arch Rival at the first WFTDA Division I tournament.  Ranked 18th in the most recent WFTDA rankings, the Steel Hurtin will compete as the 5th seed during the third Division I tournament in Asheville (NC) two weeks later against the Minnesota RollerGirls.  While Ohio’s contest against Steel City will not go toward any more rankings for the 2012 season, the results will carry over into 2013 rankings as teams are ranked based on bouts from the previous twelve months. Although both squads have a long history of flat track action, Ohio and Steel City have only laced their skates against each other three times.  Ohio won a close one in 2007 at home (134-131) before the series was tied in Pittsburgh in 2009 (98-125).  Most recently, Steel City came to Columbus in April when Ohio upset the higher ranked Steel Hurtin crew 246-162.  Don’t expect the same Steel City squad to take the

(24) Ohio Defeats (32) Syndicate

The (24) Ohio Roller Girls played a tune-up bout against the (32) Chicago Outfit Syndicate this past weekend before they head out for a difficult road bout against Steel City on August 10th.  Historically, OHRG is 1-2 against the Syndicate, first suffering a loss at Chicago in 2010 (172-34), then again at the 2011 BrewHaHa tournament (68-147) before redeeming themselves at home in 2012 (164-97).  This past weekend’s 273-106 drubbing over the Chicago Outfit took Ohio’s record to 13-5 this season with two bouts to go before they head to Ft. Wayne (IN) for the WFTDA Division I playoffs in September.  The Chicago Outfit will also compete in Division I post-season play, but a little further west in Salem (OR). The Ohio Roller Girls took the lead on the first jam and never looked back, thanks to clock-eating power jams and a staunch, powerful defense.  Ohio’s Phoenix Bunz scored the first four points of the bout before Lola Blow cut the OHRG lead in half 2-4 on the next jam.  Three double-digit jams over the next five outings saw the Ohio lead skyrocket quickly to 73-15 after only nine minutes.  During that time, Ohio received three power jams and saw The

GANG GREEN FALLS TO SHADE BRIGADE

Last season, Ohio's Gang Green handily defeated the Chicago Outfit Shade Brigade 202-85 in Columbus.  Unfortunately for Gang Green, they would not relieve the exuberance of last season’s victory as they fell to the Shade Brigade 128-199.  The first half was highlighted by big scoring runs by both squads, a 43-0 run by the Shade Brigade to start the bout and a 51-0 run by Ohio to follow.  The bout started as the Outfit’s Jenergizer Bunny got things rolling by posting a 20-0 power jam after a Paige Bleed track cut.  Outfit’s Graves added four before Ante Madder scored five after breaking her collarbone mid-jam.  Four more by Graves and ten by Scream Printer quickly took the Shade Brigade’s lead to 43-0 seven minutes into the contest. Advantageous on the power jam, Gang Green’s Burnadeath got Ohio on the board with a 20-0 jam.  The next four jams saw Gang Green’s defense hold the Outfit scoreless while allowing Burnadeath to add a 15 point power jam.  Including scores by Paige Bleed and Ally McSqueal, Gang Green took the lead 51-43 with 15:30 remaining in the first half. Gang Green’s lead didn’t last long as the Shade Brigade reclaimed the lead for good

NAPTOWN FALLS TO OHIO 106-232, QUALIFIES FOR PLAYOFFS

The (17 DNN, 18 WFTDA) Naptown Roller Girls were in desperate need of a bout to qualify for the 2013 playoffs after the unexpected cancellation of their June bout, leaving them one Division I bout away from qualifying for playoffs (primarily due to their bouts against Cincinnati and Windy City being unsanctioned). True to their motto of “Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime,” the (23 DNN, 20 WFTDA) Ohio Roller Girls agreed to play the ladies from Indianapolis at their Columbus practice facility Wednesday night.  Even with the bout scheduled on short notice, both squads were able to field their primary teams as Ohio soundly defeated Naptown 232-106.  The bout and victory for Ohio not only ensured that Naptown would be playing in the post-season, but it was a bout Ohio wanted after losing to Naptown 86-222 with a short roster at last year’s Thrill of the Spill. The bout kicked off as Ohio’s Phoenix Bunz was sent to the box for a back block on the third jam. Unopposed, Naptown’s Maiden America snatched an early 8-1 lead for the visiting Tornado Sirens.  The following jam placed Naptown’s G-Rocket in the box as Burnadeath and Amy Spears forced a track cut.  The power jam for

(20) Ohio Outduels (16) Detroit 196-147

Depending on which ranking system you looked at Saturday morning, either the (#23 DNN, #20 WFTDA) Ohio Roller Girls or (#24 DNN, #16 WFTDA) Detroit Derby Girls could have been considered the underdog in search of an upset against their opponent.  Historically, Detroit has had Ohio’s number, posting a 3-0 record over the ladies from Columbus.  Unfortunately, you can’t have a rivalry if one team always wins.  The Ohio Roller Girls broke the streak and snatched their first ever victory over the visitors from Motown this weekend 196-147 to secure their second victory over a higher ranked team this season. In one of the best bouts of the season, those at the Ohio Building saw seven lead changes, a jam that included a star pass and four jammer penalties, and Detroit’s Racer McChaseHer get through the pack on her initial pass after losing two wheels on her left skate.  Both teams had something to prove after BrewHaHa where Detroit dropped two bouts to Windy City and Arch Rival, and Ohio suffered a big loss at the hands of Minnesota.  With only one more ranking released before playoffs, it was obvious from the start that both squads were ready to leave everything

GANG GREEN DISMANTLES MOTOR CITY DISASSEMBLY LINE 220-76

It was only eight months ago that Gang Green traveled to Detroit and suffered a close loss at the hands of the Motor City Disassembly Line 118-155.  Not wanting to relive the same outcome in front of their home crowd, Gang Green played a clean game and simply dominated their counterparts at the Ohio Building this past weekend 220-76. The MCDL obtained lead the first two jams of the contest and briefly held a 2-0 lead before Gang Green took over and never looked back.  After trailing 0-2, Paige Bleed and Bigg Rigg scored jams of 10 and 15 respectively for a 25-2 swing.  Gang Green jammers were able to obtain lead over the next five jams and increased their lead to 40-2.  A couple of jams later, forearm and back block penalties to MCDL’s Ghetto Barbie allowed Blitz Lemon to nearly double Gang Green’s score with a 30 point power jam. Nearly halfway through the first period, Gang Green started to pull away, 70-12.  Jammer penalties began to hurt Detroit’s reserve squad as Midnight Vulture found herself in the box for two penalties that spanned three jams.  First, a track cut allowed Gang Green’s Burnadeath to score a 20-0 power jam.

(20) Ohio Welcomes (16) Detroit Derby Girls

This weekend, the #20 Ohio Roller Girls welcome to Columbus the #16 Detroit Derby Girls for their second-to-last home bout of the 2013 season.  This bout means a considerable amount for both squads, as only one more rankings release will come before the teams know their final rank and seeding as they both head into the Division 1 playoffs. Both Ohio and Detroit are original members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, with seven full seasons of All Star competition under their belts.  Amazingly, of Ohio’s 91 sanctioned bouts as an All Star team, only three have come against the ladies from Detroit. In fact, Detroit is only one of three higher-echelon teams in the North Central that Ohio has never defeated (Windy City and Minnesota being the other two). In those three bouts, Detroit has defeated the Ohio Roller Girls 131-114 (2007), 105-57 (2008), and most recently right after last year’s regional playoffs 159-129 (2012).  In their most recent bout, Ohio and Detroit battled through three lead changes before Detroit claimed the lead for good with just over seven minutes remaining in the bout.  It was an exciting bout for skaters and fans alike, and has set the expectations for

(20) OHIO ROLLER GIRLS SPLIT AT MIDWEST BREWHAHA

The (20) Ohio Roller Girls traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this past weekend to take part in the fourth annual Midwest BrewHaHa tournament hosted by the Brewcity Bruisers.  OHRG have participated at BrewHaHa all four years and, including this year, have amassed a 5-3 record at the annual event.  This year, Ohio split their weekend with a convincing defeat of (59) Pikes Peak 387-64, but lost to the (10) Minnesota RollerGirls 340-102. (20) OHIO DEFEATS (59) PIKES PEAK DERBY DAMES 387-64 Kitty Liquorbottom scores 110 points, The Smacktivist adds 104. Ohio’s first opponent this past weekend was the Pikes Peak Derby Dames (PPDD) from Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Along with Ohio (and their next opponent Minnesota), Pikes Peak were original WFTDA members back in 2005.  Entering their bout with Ohio, PPDD were ranked #59 and had a 1-3 record including a non-sanctioned bout against Rocky Mountain. PPDD's lone victory was against Ark Valley and their three setbacks were to teams all ranked considerably higher than them (Rocky Mountain, No Coast, and Arch Rival). The weekend's losses to both Arch Rival and Ohio at BrewHaHa could potentially knock PPDD out of the Division II playoffs as only the teams ranked #40-#60 make the playoffs. Ohio opened the
