GANG GREEN TAKES DOWN PLAN B (Kitchener, Ontario) 247-94

To Plan B, or not to Plan B… that was the question going into Saturday’s reserve squad battle between Ohio’s Gang Green and Tri-City’s Plan B.  The answer was simple as Gang Green brought strength, depth, and an overall dominant performance to the track as they soundly defeated the visitors 247-94.  Gang Green started slowly as Plan B took an early 8-7 lead going into the fourth jam.  A multiplayer block to Plan B’s Commander Will Wrecker allowed Blitz Lemon to score a 17-0 jam, thus creating the bout’s first (and only) lead change.  Lemon’s power jam was followed by a 14-0 jam by Hop Devil which took Gang Green’s lead to 38-8 with 22:30 remaining in the first period. A string of eight straight lead jammers for Gang Green allowed the home squad to go on an 86-4 run over Tri-City and extend their lead to 93-12.  The final jam of that run saw Gang Green’s pack force a track cut to Plan B’s Slaughterhouse Streeter, which put Blitz Lemon on yet another power jam.  Lemon took full advantage of a strong pack that was able to hold Streeter on her initial pass after being released from the box and

(22) OHIO WELCOMES (41) TRI-CITY ROLLER DERBY FOR INTERNATIONAL BOUT

Fresh off their 2-1 performance at Quad City Chaos hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, the Ohio Roller Girls will host their second home bout of the season against, well, more Canadians!  After splitting bouts with the #1 and #2 ranked teams in Canada, Ohio will try their luck against the third best team north of the border, Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener, ON), on Saturday, April 5th, at the Lausche Building.  Historically, the Ohio Roller Girls are 9-1 against international teams, including a 2-0 record against Tri-City.  The two teams last met in May 2012 when Ohio was victorious 159-113.  Prior to that, Ohio also took the win in June 2011, 131-76.    The Ohio Roller Girls will have the advantage coming into this weekend’s bout, having already played four bouts in the 2014 season.  They were victorious in the season opener against Nashville 194-128, and secured two additional victories at Quad City Chaos against Bleeding Heartland (Bloomington, IN) 291-93, and Toronto 185-172.  Their lone loss this season was to the Montreal New Skids on the Block 385-158.  Ohio will feature The Smacktivist and Kitty Liquorbottom on the jammer line, as both played tremendously well at Quad City Chaos.  For their efforts

GANG GREEN FALLS TO TORONTO’S BAY STREET BRUISERS

In the much anticipated rubber match between Ohio’s Gang Green and Toronto’s Bay Street Bruisers, it was the home squad BSB who took the victory in the third matchup played at Quad City Chaos.  Gang Green was victorious 163-107 two years ago, but the Bay Street Bruisers were able to even the series at the 2013 Quad City Chaos tournament 207-112.  In what has become a budding rivalry, Gang Green fell in the third encounter over the weekend 302-94.    Gang Green traveled with a new lineup to Quad City Chaos that featured three skaters who were not only making their international debut, but their Gang Green debuts as well.  Rookies Tasha Cookies, Lita Fuse, and Hope Dela Vega all made the trip to Canada for their first real derby action with Ohio and all three played extremely well.  The Bay Street Bruisers got out to a quick start, holding Gang Green scoreless over the first three jams 13-0.  Jammer penalties on both sides in the fourth jam boosted the BSB lead to 23-9. Throughout the first fifteen minutes of the bout, jammers on both sides were content to play “hit and quit” derby, calling the jam off after one scoring

OHIO CROSSES THE BORDER FOR QUAD CITY CHAOS

The #22 Ohio Roller Girls will invade Canada for the second straight year this weekend as they participate in Quad City Chaos, hosted by  Toronto Roller Derby.  Ohio will compete in three bouts over two days against #17 Montreal, #29 Toronto, and #42 Bleeding Heartland.  Last year’s Quad City Chaos was the first ever fully WFTDA sanctioned event held in Canada, with three of this year’s teams making return trips for the event.  As previously mentioned, this will be Ohio’s second trip to the event, following an impressive 3-0 record at last season’s QCC with wins over Toronto, Rideau Valley, and Queen City.  This will be the fifth consecutive year for Toronto serving as host league, where they have amassed an 8-4 record at the event.  Montreal will be making their third appearance at Quad City Chaos.  After going 6-0 at the event in 2010 and 2011, the New Skids on the Block took a couple of years off before coming back for bouts against Ohio, Bleeding Heartland, and Toronto.  They will be the highest ranked team competing in Toronto this weekend.  This will be Bleeding Heartland’s first trip to Quad City Chaos.     #22 Ohio vs #17 Montreal Looking at the schedule

GANG GREEN DEFEATS NASHVILLE’S BRAWL STARS 170-114

After watching the Ohio Roller Girls defeat the Music City All Stars in the previous bout, Gang Green would make it an Ohio sweep over the visitors from Nashville, Tennessee, defeating the Brawl Stars 170-114 in the season opener.  A close bout throughout the first half featured four lead changes and a slim lead at the half for Gang Green.  However, a 112-68 point second half advantage for Gang Green left little doubt late that Gang Green would take home the victory. Skating in her first bout with Gang Green, Hop Devil opened the scoring for the home squad after calling the jam 4-0.  After tying the bout on the next jam, Nashville’s Electric Boogaloo would create the first lead change after securing a 3-0.  Boogaloo’s three point jam put the Brawl Stars ahead 7-4.  The lead would not last long, as it was again Hop Devil scoring four more points that gave the lead back to Gang Green 8-7.  Points were nickel-and-dimed over the next three jams until Nashville swung the scoreboard back in their favor 16-15 with 19:00 remaining in the first period. A string of lead jammers for Nashville’s Big Banger, Electric Boogaloo, Cruella Lavelle, and Ginger Juke increased

(22) OHIO WELCOMES (39) NASHVILLE IN SEASON OPENER

The 2013 season finally came to a close in early November for the Ohio Roller Girls.  It was a season of focused determination that ultimately resulted in the OHRG’s first ever trip to the WFTDA Championship tournament.  Twelve teams made it to Champs, and Ohio was the lowest seed (#21) ever to qualify under the current WFTDA rankings system.  Every time Ohio set a goal this season, they accomplished that goal.  They wanted to make it to the Division 1 playoffs, and they did.  They wanted to finish in the top three at playoffs to secure a spot at Champs, and they did.  They wanted to win a bout at Champs to prove they belonged, and they did.  Ohio defeated the Rat City Roller Girls 230-212 before falling to the eventual world champions, Gotham Girls Roller Derby.  As successful as 2013 was for the Ohio Roller Girls, the skaters and coaches can’t rest on that success to carry them through the 2014 season.  With the losses of powerhouses Phoenix Bunz and Pippi RipYourStockings, as well as coaches Great Scott and BFF to retirement, Ohio has apparently stuck to their “anyone, anywhere, anytime” mentality as they assembled their 2014 schedule.  OHRG

OHRG Gets RESPECT at WFTDA Champs, Defeats Rat City

Much like Jacob Rodney Cohen’s more popular persona, Rodney Dangerfield, the Ohio Roller Girls didn’t get much respect this season.  They didn’t play anyone strong, they said.  They’ll never make it out of playoffs, they said.  They don’t deserve to play at Champs, they said.  There’s no way they’ll win a game in Milwaukee, they said.  Well, Ohio did play teams.  They played anyone who wanted to play.  They played 50 bouts in the last two seasons!  FIFTY!  They went into the Ft. Wayne Division 1 Playoffs as the 6th seed, practically written off before they even took the track.  Ohio then overcame a big first half deficit and knocked off the #3 Arch Rival Roller Girls.  Their run would surely come to an end the following day as they were scheduled to play #2 Montreal, the team most thought would be the first international team to qualify for Champs, right?  As heard from Lee Corso every Saturday morning on College Gameday, “Not so fast, my friend.”  Ohio controlled the bout against Montreal and cemented their appearance at Champs.  The WFTDA currently has 212 member leagues… 12 made it to Champs, including the Ohio Roller Girls.  As they continued to

THE QUEST FOR THE HYDRA

(21) OHIO ROLLER GIRLS TO PLAY (18) RAT CITY AT WFTDA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Much like the title sequence during the original Star Trek television series in which William Shatner narrates the famous words, “To boldly go where no man has gone before,” the women of the Ohio Roller Girls will “explore strange new worlds” on November 8th as they make their first ever appearance at the WFTDA roller derby world championship tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Ohio, the lowest seed to ever make the tournament with the newest WFTDA rankings being released at the end of September, secured their spot at the big dance by finishing second at the Ft. Wayne Division I Playoff in early October.  In Ft. Wayne, Ohio upset Arch Rival (218-166) and Montreal (212-149) before losing in the championship bout against Denver (134-304).  Ohio will join Denver, London (UK), Texas, Philly, Angel City, Gotham, Rocky Mountain, Windy City, Bay Area, Atlanta, and Rat City at Championships as these teams also finished in the top three of the other Division I playoffs at Richmond (VA), Asheville (NC), and Salem (OR). The Ohio Roller Girls enter Champs as one of four #2 seeds, which pits them against #3 Rat City from

OHRG HEADED TO CHAMPS!

OHIO TO PLAY AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! After coming so close last season to their first ever trip to the WFTDA Championship tournament, the Ohio Roller Girls have clinched a spot at the big dance in November. At the end of each season, the WFTDA holds four Division I tournaments to determine which teams will advance to Champs. The four Division I playoffs were held this year at Ft. Wayne (IN), Richmond (VA), Asheville (NC), and Salem (OR). Using an s-curve ranking system, the top 40 teams in the WFTDA were placed into one of the four above mentioned locations. At each tournament location, the top three finishers would earn a trip to the Championship tournament in November held in Milwaukee (WI). How did the Ohio Roller Girls do it? They came into Ft. Wayne as the #6 seed and upset #3 Arch Rival. OHRG then upset #2 Montreal before losing to #1 Denver in the final bout. The fantastic showing earned the Ohio Roller Girls a #2 seed at Champs. #6 OHIO COLLAPSES #3 ARCH RIVAL 218-166 The Smacktivist scores 103 points OHRG and Arch Rival have a storied history against one another, with the overall record against one another at 2-2. OHIO BREAKS SCORING RECORD IN DEFEAT OF CAROLINA

OHIO BREAKS SCORING RECORD IN DEFEAT OF CAROLINA OHRG RETIRES JERSEY NUMBERS 23 AND 5150 In a night filled with success and emotion, the Ohio Roller Girls didn’t disappoint themselves, or the 1,000+ fans that packed the Lausche Building this past weekend.  If you weren’t in attendance on Saturday, not only did you miss the OHRG’s last home bout of the season, but you missed out on saying goodbye to two of the most dominant athletes to ever lace their skates for the Ohio Roller Girls.  Phoenix Bunz and Pippi RipYourStockings skated in their final home bout ever, as both skaters have decided to retire following playoffs next month.  Following the bout, both skaters had their jerseys retired, a first for the league, keeping any skater in the future from wearing jersey numbers 23 and 5150. For the last home stand of 2013, (24) Ohio took on the (50) Carolina Rollergirls in a rematch of the bout they played last season in Raleigh.  Carolina, the only team to defeat Ohio last year during their WFTDA record setting 21-1 season, had significant roster changes in the off-season and slipped considerably in the rankings coming into Columbus.  As expected, the OHRG ran away from
