We’re off to Canada!

For the first time in four years, Ohio Roller Derby will travel internationally for tournament play, heading to Canada over Memorial Day weekend for the first annual Royal Brawl Invitational. One of 22 WFTDA Recognized Tournaments occurring this year, the three-day event will take place in Guelph, ON, Canada, presenting an opportunity for both A- and B-level competition for teams from across Canada and the northern United States. In addition to Ohio and hosts Royal City Roller Derby, participants include E-Ville Roller Derby (Edmonton, AB, Canada), Ithaca League of Women Rollers (Ithaca, NY), North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN), Ottawa Valley Roller Derby (Ottawa, ON, Canada), Queen City Roller Girls (Buffalo, NY), Toronto Roller Derby (Toronto, ON, Canada), and Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener, ON, Canada). The Ohio All Stars will play three sanctioned games over two days, starting with a first-time bout against E-Ville on Saturday afternoon before rematching against prior opponents Royal City that evening and North Star on Sunday. Like Ohio, (47) E-Ville earned a spot at the 2017 WFTDA D2 Playoffs & Championships last August, but the two teams did not meet on the track. OHIO HANGS TOUGH AGAINST CHARLOTTESVILLE

Rolling into the second half of their home season, Ohio Roller Derby welcomed Charlottesville Derby Dames (Charlottesville, VA) for an evening of exciting, closely-contested derby action on May 12th. (51) OHIO FALLS SHORT AGAINST (42) CHARLOTTESVILLE, 108 - 165 The All Star game showed itself as a battle of grinding defense early in the first period, with both sides denying any significant point gain and hovering within easy striking distance through halftime. Fighting to establish an initial advantage, BrussKnuckles posted the first four points in jam two, but a power jam for Charlottesville permitted a 5-0 gain and the first of five lead changes. Bigg Rigg flipped the balance in jam four, eking out two points before three lead jammer calls in a row allowed the Virginia squad to retake the lead and begin building on it. Held scoreless for four jams, Ohio offered Charlottesville similar treatment with quick call offs, and jam eleven brought progress to a halt as both jammers spent two full minutes fighting tenacious defense without ever completing their initial passes. (51) Ohio Welcomes (42) Charlottesville Derby Dames

Following a decisive road victory against DC Rollergirls, (51) Ohio Roller Derby returns home to the Ohio Expo Center to host (42) Charlottesville Derby Dames (Charlottesville, VA) on Saturday, May 12th, in a first-time meeting of the two teams. Since becoming a full member league in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association in 2012, Charlottesville has been on an upward trajectory. A strong record in regular season play in 2015 led to their first postseason appearance at the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs, and continued success catapulted them to a fourth place finish in Division 2 Playoffs in 2016. In 2017, Charlottesville had a stellar 8-0 season that helped push them back into Division 1 and earn a third consecutive Playoffs appearance, where they suffered two losses to higher-ranked Montreal Roller Derby and Jacksonville Rollergirls. Charlottesville kicked off their 2018 season in February with a 399-159 blowout against DC Rollergirls, and remain undefeated after knocking out Brandywine Roller Derby at the beginning of May. Retaining a majority of their 2017 Playoffs bench, Charlottesville boasts a veteran jammer pool that includes Spank Puncherella, Machete, River Styx Phoenix, and Stonewallup. OHIO SERVES UP SWEEPING VICTORIES AGAINST WEST VIRGINIA AND SOUTH BEND

Never a team to grow discouraged over falling short in a challenging game, Ohio Roller Derby took their recent loss in stride and came out swinging in game three against first-time opponents West Virginia Roller Derby, as did Gang Green against South Bend Roller Girls. (47) OHIO DOMINATES IN DEFENSE AGAINST (91) WEST VIRGINIA, 355-82 Intense defense, 73% lead jammer status, and nine double-digit shutout jams allowed Ohio to steadily build a lead that quickly proved insurmountable for a short-rostered West Virginia. West Virginia drew first blood, snagging lead and a quick 4 points; Ohio retaliated by frustrating their jammer on a never-ending initial pass while BrussKnuckles posted a 15-0 jam. Three jams later, West Virginia looked to capitalize on a 4-1 pack advantage, but Betty T. KayO locked onto Dae-O Reckoning on her own, allowing BrussKnuckles to grab lead status and 19 uncontested points, widening Ohio’s lead to 41-8 after 8 minutes of play. (47) Ohio Seeks New Adventure Against (91) West Virginia

Despite the lingering hold of winter on Columbus, Ohio Roller Derby extends a warm welcome to West Virginia Roller Derby (Beckley, WV) and South Bend Roller Girls (South Bend, IN) as they return to the Ohio Expo Center on Saturday, April 21. West Virginia, a state of smaller and in many cases more geographically isolated roller derby teams, made the bold decision to combine efforts across leagues with the hope of climbing the WFTDA rankings into Division 1. In a July 2017 statement, Beckley Area Derby Dames announced that the newly-formed West Virginia Roller Derby would take over their spot in WFTDA rankings, pooling the top talent in the state. Making a statement in their first game under the new name and charter, the West Virginia All Stars traveled to Tennessee in August and flattened the Nashville Rollergirls, 251-83. The inaugural battle with Ohio is the fourth of West Virginia’s five scheduled games for 2018. Currently 0-3, the WV All Stars suffered road losses at Mother State (Richmond, VA) in February and at Cincinnati Rollergirls (Cincinnati, OH) earlier in April. TOUGH HOME TRACK LOSSES TO ANN ARBOR

Continuing their home season endeavor, Ohio Roller Derby returned to the track to tackle Ann Arbor Roller Derby (Ann Arbor, MI) on Saturday, April 7th. (47) OHIO ALL STARS STRUGGLE TO HOLD (41) ANN ARBOR BRAWLSTARS, 97-274 The highly anticipated rematch between the closely-ranked teams was slated to be one of the toughest games on Ohio’s schedule, and a short roster proved an extra hurdle, but the home team remained positive and determined to play their best together. A forearm penalty assessed to the Ann Arbor jammer in the first minute of the game allowed Pain Train to post the first 5 points for Ohio and maintain a narrow lead until jam four, when an 18-0 run catapulted the Brawlstars to a lead they would continue to hold. Taking advantage of strong pivots Kitty Liquorbottom and Betty T. KayO, Ohio employed star passes to eke out quick scoring passes and stay within striking distance. (47) Ohio to Host Northern Neighbors (37) Ann Arbor

With their home season well underway following a decisive victory over North Star Roller Derby in March, Ohio Roller Derby gears up for game two against Ann Arbor Roller Derby (Ann Arbor, MI) in what has become a yearly matchup. The teams have met twice now, each taking away a win: Ohio opened their 2016 home season with a 244-139 win against the Brawlstars, and Ann Arbor pulled off a 193-124 victory when hosting the Columbus squad last June. Ann Arbor went 4-6 in regular season play in 2017 before making their second postseason appearance and finishing out the year with two losses at the 2017 WFTDA Division 1 Playoff in Seattle. The Brawlstars kicked off their 2018 season with a trip to Buffalo, NY, where they lost an unsanctioned game to Queen City Roller Girls on March 24th. In addition to the trip to Ohio this weekend, they will also travel to South Carolina at the end of April for the fourth annual Southern Discomfort invitational, hosted by Columbia Roller Derby, and to the inaugural Udder Chaos tournament hosted by Mad Rollin’ Dolls (Madison WI) in May. OHIO ROLLER DERBY BLASTS INTO THIRTEENTH SEASON

After a lengthy off-season spent rebuilding the charter roster and overhauling strategies, Ohio Roller Derby kicked off their 2018 competitive season with a packed home doubleheader against North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN). (47) OHIO ALL STARS ROCKET PAST (62) NORTH STAR SUPERNOVAS, 223-111 The sheer number of CT skaters who stepped down since the end of the 2017 competitive season - seven total, some temporarily, some permanently - led to preseason speculation about the stability of the Ohio roster going into a rebuilding year. Never a team to back down from a challenge, the All Stars took the departure of four of their top-scoring jammers in stride, and on March 17th showed Columbus that not only is their jammer pool as deep as ever, but that they’re already well on their way to a strong, cohesive squad. Ohio opted for an aggressive start, nabbing lead jammer status in each of the first three jams. In jam 4, Bigg Rigg evaded a rear North Star defense to escape the pack first; with offensive assistance from Paige Bleed and Kelsey Khaos on scoring passes, she easily doubled Ohio’s score for a 23-3 lead while the North Star pivot-turned-jammer left the track on a forearm

(47) Ohio Roller Derby Launches Season Against (62) North Star Roller Derby

Ohio Roller Derby will open their thirteenth season on Saturday, March 17th, against North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN) here in Columbus at the Ohio Expo Center. The two teams have met only twice before, most recently in 2012, when Ohio pulled off a 149-101 road victory at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Though six years have passed, a few OHRD veterans from that roster remain, including Amy Spears, Bigg Rigg, Kitty Liquorbottom, Paige Bleed, and Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin. The All Stars return to their home track at the Ohio Expo Center after a long hiatus from competitive play following their appearance at the 2017 WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Pittsburgh, PA, last August. Ohio Roller Derby 2018 Season Preview

Ohio Roller Derby will return to familiar ground as they enter their thirteenth year of competitive play in 2018, taking the track in the Ohio Building at the Ohio Expo Center for all home games this year. Ohio finds themselves in a rebuilding year after a string of retirements following their appearance at the 2017 WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Pittsburgh, PA, last August. The OHRD charter team composition may be different, but many of its skaters already have several years of play time together. A handful have returned from long-term absence and others have moved up from the Ohio B team, Gang Green. A focus on developing talent, building chemistry, and playing their best game of derby each game will not only allow Ohio to remain competitive within the WFTDA this year, but will set the team up for continued success as this charter gains experience and confidence together. Starting players Blitz Lemon, Gorges Curves, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, Slammerhead, and Val Holla have retired from competitive play, but fans may spot them cheering trackside on game day.
