(20) OHIO TO COMPETE AT MIDWEST BREWHAHA

This weekend, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will travel to Milwaukee (WI) to take part in the annual Midwest BrewHaHa tournament hosted by the Brewcity Bruisers.  The festivities will kick off Friday and bouts will be played through Sunday evening.  The weekend will feature twenty sanctioned bouts, several reserve squad bouts, junior derby, and men’s derby. The Ohio Roller Girls All Stars are slated to play two bouts during the weekend, once on Saturday against the (59) Pikes Peak Derby Dames (Colorado Springs, CO) and again on Sunday against the (10) Minnesota RollerGirls.  Overall, OHRG have found success while playing in Milwaukee.  This trip will be the fourth time the Ohioans have attended BrewHaHa where they have since amassed a 4-2 record at the annual event.  In 2010, Ohio split the weekend by beating Hammer City but losing to Omaha.  The following year, they again split by defeating Bleeding Heartland but dropping a bout to the Chicago Outfit.  In 2012, Ohio went 2-0 with victories over Grand Raggidy and hosts Brewcity. OHRG have never faced Pikes Peak, their opponent on Saturday, who will enter the tournament with a 1-1 record this season.  They started 2012 with a big victory over Ark Valley

Happy Birthday, Ohio Roller Girls!

The Ohio Roller Girls, originally the brainchild of Melissa Wallace (Scarlette Fury), had its first organizational meeting April 23, 2005 at a local pizza shop. Recruitment continued throughout the summer of 2005, and by winter the league had about 30 skaters practicing regularly. OHRG also was one of the founding leagues of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), what has become the skater-run international governing body of women's roller derby. In December 2005, the league hosted an exhibition bout at a skating rink. Titled “Skatemare Before Christmas,” the game pitted the Jingle Belles v. the Roller Ghouls. Each year after, this match-up is revived as a “just-for-fun” charity benefit game at the end of the competitive season. You can read a recap of the very first Skatemare here. After a year of running drills and gaining their skate legs, The Ohio Roller Girls hosted their first home teams bout on April 23, 2006, exactly one year after their inaugural meeting! The bout was aptly dubbed "First Blood." For the first three years, competition was mainly focused on four home teams: the Band of Brawlers, Blackeye Bullies, Sprockettes and the Take-Outs. HIGHWAY CLEANUP: EARTH DAY EDITION!

The Ohio Roller Girls are proud participants in the ODOT Adopt-A-Highway program. Each year, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is forced to spend $4 million on litter pick-up…a preventable problem.  That money could be used to install 323 culverts, pave 40 miles of a two-lane road, install 340 miles of guard rail, or purchase 28 snowplow trucks. “While potholes remain a priority this time of year, our crews must also focus on litter pick-up before the mowing season begins,” said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. Statewide last year, ODOT spent $4.4 million and 206,221 hours picking up 392,305 bags of trash.  In District 11, ODOT crews spent $115,469 and 5,258 hours picking up 11,059 bags of trash. Each March, ODOT organizes cleanup events around the state as part of the annual Great American Cleanup.  In Ohio, hundreds of volunteers made up of citizens, neighborhood groups, businesses, and organizations take to Ohio’s roadways to pick up thousands of bags of recyclables, litter, and debris.  “Gathering together to pick up litter along roadways gives Ohioans cleaner and safer roadways, helps to foster pride in communities, and positively affects healthy economic development,” said Director Wray.   ODOT’s more than 1,400 Adopt-A-Highway groups – at least one in each of

Ohio Dominates Quad City Chaos in Toronto

The Ohio Roller Girls traveled to Toronto last weekend to take part in the Quad City Chaos tournament. A round-robin event, Ohio faced Toronto, Rideau Valley, and Queen City. Ohio Edges Out Toronto's CN Power The OHRG All Stars kicked the weekend off with a win over CN Power. Ohio got off to a strong start, with Phoenix Bunz and the Smacktivist racking up 4 points each. Solid pack work from Ohio's Ava Tarr, Bratislava Bruiser, Loraine Acid, and Pippi RipYourStockings held CNP jammers Kookie Doe and Motorhead Molly (a former Tri-City skater) back in the first two jams. Not to be outdone, Bambi and Motorhead Molly each respectively sped through the pack to quickly answer for CN Power, shifting the score to 12-8.  Although Kookie Doe was sent to the penalty box on a track cut the following jam, Ohio's Loraine Acid had trouble with Bruiseberry Pie and Nasher the Smasher, who forced their own track cut, releasing Kookie Doe from the box. Kookie Doe successfully called off the jam despite not being lead jammer and was sent back to the box for an illegal procedure penalty.
