Ohio Roller Derby – 2017 Preview

Ohio Roller Derby will be kicking off their 2017 season in a familiar setting as OHRD will continue to play all its home bouts at the Ohio Building located within the Ohio Expo Center. What may not be familiar to some of Ohio’s die-hard fans are a few of the faces of the skaters that will make up this season’s charter squad. After an impressive debut with Ohio at the Division 1 Playoffs in Madison last season, Ithaca transfer Gorges Curves has solidified herself as a go-to jammer for OHRD and can also be thrown into a clutch pack for defensive purposes if the need arises. Another transfer coming Ohio’s way via Dayton’s Gem City is the powerful Pain Train. In her first action for Ohio last month in an unsanctioned bout at Naptown (Indianapolis), Pain Train obtained lead jammer on the bout’s final jam and was able to solidify a two-point victory for Ohio. If powerful hits and fancy footwork are something you’d be interested in, keep an eye on #00 (short for chOO chOO) as Pain Train will see a lot of track time for OHRD this year. This past Saturday, December 17th, Ohio Roller Derby held their annual end of the year gala where they celebrate the closing of another great season. 2017 OHRD Tryouts

Do you want to skate with one of the top teams in the world? Get ready for our annual open tryouts on November 1st & 3rd from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. Tryouts are open to women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming individuals 18 & over.* You should plan on both nights, though we may do a cut before the second night.(*see WTFDA's statement here: https://wftda.com/wftda-gender-statement) If you have your own skates and gear (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet), please bring them. If you don’t, skates will be available, as will pads to borrow. Mouth guards will be available to purchase for $2 (cash only). Interviews will also be scheduled, and may be on an addtional date. We strongly encourage interested skaters to test the waters with our monthly Wannabe Clinics or get involved with our Rec League to prepare. OHIO FINISHES 2016 SEASON WITH 1-2 RUN AT PLAYOFFS

From a strict win-loss pattern perspective, Ohio’s performance at the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Madison, WI looked eerily similar to their trips to D1s in Evansville, IN in 2014 and Dallas, TX in 2015: a tough loss to a higher-seeded team in their first game on Friday, a much more closely contested loss in the consolation bracket on Saturday, and a sound victory in their final game on Sunday. As teams at Playoffs only know for sure who their first opponent will be, Ohio needed to be prepared not only to play Windy City in Game 1, but any of the other eight teams in the tournament over the course of the weekend, from #10 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls to the #1-ranked team in the world, Gotham. Of the 16 skaters playing for Ohio over the course of the weekend, 13 had skated at D1s in previous years, giving the team a veteran advantage with a good dose of fresh blood in both the blocker & jammer rotations. OHIO HEADS TO WFTDA DIVISION 1 PLAYOFFS

For the fourth straight year, Ohio Roller Derby has qualified for WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs, showing their mettle as one of the top 40 teams in the world. With the implementation of the divisional system in 2013, Ohio exploded into Division 1, placing second at Playoffs and reaching the quarterfinals at Championships. They have returned to D1 Playoffs each year since, and this year will enter as the #9 seed at the final D1 tournament in Madison, WI. Hosted by the #10 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls, the tournament will also see gameplay from Gotham Girls Roller Derby, Arch Rival Roller Derby, Minnesota RollerGirls, Tampa Roller Derby, Team United, Helsinki Roller Derby, No Coast Derby Girls, and Ohio’s first opponent of the weekend, Windy City Rollers. While Ohio and Windy are next door neighbors on the current WFTDA rankings and have each played 12 sanctioned games this season, the two have had rather different journeys from last year’s postseason to now. OHIO DISPATCHES KILLAMAZOO IN PACKED HOME CLOSER

Preparing to shift gears and hit the road for the remainder of their eleventh season, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars easily wrapped up their second consecutive undefeated home season with a blowout win against the Killamazoo Derby Darlins Kill Stars. Gang Green followed suit, doubling down on the KDD Killa Crew in the second game of the night to complete a 5-1 home season. (36) OHIO SHUTS DOWN THE KILL STARS, 380-46 The magical combination of consistent lead jammer status and stalwart blocking gave Ohio an immediate advantage, as The Smacktivist, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, Blitz Lemon, Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin, Val Holla, and Betty T. KayO snagged lead in 21 out of 23 jams in the first half. Meanwhile, Ohio’s blocking core held Killamazoo scoreless for the first 9 minutes of the game, only giving up points in 4 jams. A quick succession of 3- and 4-point jams gave Ohio a clean 25-0 lead before a 3-3 jam put the Kill Stars on the board in jam 9. (36) OHIO TAKES AIM AT KILLAMAZOO

This weekend, Ohio Roller Derby will play their final home bout of 2016 as the Killamazoo Derby Darlins try to play spoiler in Columbus. Historically, Ohio has the advantage over the squad from Michigan, winning all four matchups between the two teams. They most recently played in March 2015 when Ohio was victorious 282-118. After strong performances against Carolina and Roc City in their last two home bouts, Ohio Roller Derby has secured a spot in the Division 1 Playoffs come September, in which the top 40 teams in the world will compete for the coveted Hydra Trophy. Where they’ll be seeded in the Division 1 Playoffs is yet to be determined. Currently ranked #36, Ohio would be the final 9 seed and would have to play the #28 team in the first round of the playoffs. A good showing against Killamazoo and Ohio could jump to an 8 seed where they would be favored in their opening round match against a lower ranked 9 seed. OHIO SILENCES ROC CITY IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES

Looking to secure a Division 1 Playoff spot for the OHRD All Stars, and aiming for a third straight win in less than a month for Gang Green, Ohio Roller Derby welcomed Roc City Roller Derby (Rochester, NY) and easily accomplished their goals. (36) OHIO QUIETS THE ROC STARS, 338-140 While Ohio’s jammers posted more than a few impressive scoring runs, it was the blocking core’s unstoppable defense in the second half that truly solidified the home team victory, holding Roc City to a mere 48-point gain while Lora “Outa My” Wayman, Blitz Lemon, The Smacktivist, and Kitty Liquorbottom racked up a combined 200 points. Ohio kicked off the game with a handful of 3- and 4-point jams, and Blitz Lemon squeezed through on the inside line to give the Columbus squad a 21-3 lead in jam 6. Roc City tried to draw a track cut penalty on Lora “Outa My” Wayman, but she snagged lead while Burnadeath swept the opposing jammer out of bounds; a patch of penalty trouble for Ohio allowed Roc City to outscore them for five straight jams despite fleet jamming by Betty T. THE ROC STARS’ 2016 TOUR INCLUDES COLUMBUS

The old saying goes, “If the music’s too loud, you’re too old.” Well, the Ohio Roller Derby will be looking to make some noise of their own this weekend as they welcome in the Roc Stars of Roc City Roller Derby (Rochester, NY). In the first contest of the evening, the #36 Ohio Roller Derby will be putting a 16 game home win streak on the line as they also play for a spot in the Division 1 Playoffs in September. A good showing from the home team will solidify OHRD in the top 40, rather than dropping them down in to Division 2. If Ohio keeps their #36 rank throughout this month, that would be good enough for a 9-seed in the playoffs, pitting them against an 8-seed in the first round (with the winner moving on to play the 1-seed in the next round). Ohio, currently sporting a 6-1 record in their 2016 campaign, only have the Roc City bout remaining on their schedule before the final Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rankings come out and seed teams for playoffs. Ohio will still play three bouts this season before playoffs (Columbia, SC; Atlanta, GA; and Detroit, MI), but they

DUAL VICTORIES OVER CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS

For their fourth home game of the season, Ohio Roller Derby hosted the Carolina Rollergirls (Raleigh, NC) for two roof-raising games that both ended in decisive wins for the Columbus league. (37) OHIO ALL STARS CARVE OUT 206-119 VICTORY OVER (65) CAROLINA ALL-STARS After their last match-up resulted in an overwhelming 432-29 victory for Ohio, Carolina seemed eager for a different outcome this time around. Five lead changes and two tie scores in the first half gave Ohio a very narrow lead at halftime, but the home squad methodically widened the point spread during the second period to secure their sixteenth straight home victory and bring their season record to 6-1. Two quick 4-0 jams gave Carolina the initial lead, but Elektra Magneto, Kitty Liquorbottom, Stevie Brown, and Chainsaw held Magically Maulicious on her initial pass for over a lap while Blitz Lemon put up the first 2 points for Ohio in the third jam. Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin posted 5 clean points in jam 6, and a 4-0 jam by Lora “Outa My” Wayman gave Ohio a 13-12 lead after 8 minutes of gameplay.
