Ohio’s Defense Stifles Cincinnati 306-83

Playoff-bound Ohio took full advantage of the Black Sheep’s difficulties while posting a 306-83 drubbing on Saturday. The Cincinnati Black Sheep have struggled through a season of personnel turnover, but their aggressive blocking showed signs that the Cincy team has what it takes to rebuild. The bout featured dazzling displays by the Ohio jammers. The Smacktivist alone outscored the Black Sheep by 55 points en route to a 19 jam, 138 point outing featuring their usual array of spins and jukes. No one can cut an edge quite like Mack. Burnadeath showed off her cat-like agility in the thirteenth jam of the first half when she neatly side-stepped a steam-rolling Cincinnati blocker; the blocker whiffed and Burna slid by to take lead. Bigg Rigg had the play of the bout in the second jam of the second half when she flew over the apex, passing the startled Black Sheep defense and stealing four points from the Cincinnati jammer, who called off the jam too late. GANG GREEN SUBDUES CINCINNATI’S VIOLENT LAMBS 230-94

Following in the footsteps of their charter teammates, Ohio’s Gang Green was victorious last weekend over their in-state rival, the Cincinnati Violent Lambs.  The bout also represented a secondary victory for Ohio fans as it marked the return of crowd favorite and original league member HellionBOI, who took the last year off due to a knee injury.  HellionBOI gave the crowd something to cheer about in the bout’s sixth jam, as she rattled off a 25 point power jam to give Gang Green the lead 33-9.  With a fairly loose jammer rotation of Blitz Lemon, Texas Chainsaw Sasskicker, HellionBOI, and KloverKill, Gang Green kept their jammers fresh resulting in nearly fully rested jammers for each outing.  Playing nearly as well as their jamming counterparts, Gang Green’s pack of Zinnia Zombie, Chestburster, Quiet Storm, and Elektra Magneto kept Violent Lambs jammers in check, creating six first half power jams for their own jammers.  The first half was highlighted by two particular jams by TactiGal and KloverKill, who scored 25 and 20 point jams nearly back to back.  In both instances, it was great blocking by Val Holla and teammates opening outside lanes that allowed their jammers to pass.  At the half,

(20) Ohio and Cincinnati Continue In-State Rivalry

Only 120 miles separate their two cities, but the Ohio Roller Girls and the Cincinnati Rollergirls have not taken the track against one another since October 2011.  A long-standing rivalry between these two squads has limited the number of times they have met.  In fact, since the Cincinnati league formed back in 2007, these two teams have only met five times.  Historically, the Cincinnati Black Sheep are 4-1 against Ohio, with their last victory coming against OHRG at the 2011 North Central Playoffs, 168-82.  Since then, however, Ohio and Cincinnati have seen their programs go in opposite directions.    A change in league structure for Ohio led to more bouts with fewer skaters in the league.  The focus on the team has enabled OHRG to make not only regional, but international, playoffs for the last three seasons.  This dedication culminated in 2013 when they not only qualified for the WFTDA Championship tournament, but were victorious in their opening round bout against Rat City (Seattle, WA).  Ohio has qualified once again for post-season play this year, with an upcoming bout against the Jacksonville Roller Girls in September.  Conversely, the Black Sheep of Cincinnati have fallen from a top 40 team eleven months

OHIO FALLS TO ARCH RIVAL

Ohio Roller Girls All Stars vs. Arch Rival Roller Girls All Stars With the long history between the Arch Rival Roller Girls and the Ohio Roller Girls, it could have been anyone’s game on Saturday. Ohio wanted nothing more than to break Arch Rival's unbeaten winning streak at home, and Arch undeniably wanted revenge for last year’s playoff loss.  Unfortunately for Ohio, the hometown team prevailed. The Smacktivist drew first blood against Mighty Mighty Boston, but it didn’t take long for the tide to turn against Ohio. The Arch defense was not to be messed with from the very beginning. Blockers Mayor Francis Slayer, Emily Rineheart, and Downtown Dallis, among others, worked hard to keep the Ohio jammers frustrated, holding back the likes of Kitty Liquorbottom. With Ohio jammers held back, Arch was able to hold a point lead through the majority of the first half and into the second. In the last half, Ohio wanted nothing more than to even things up. While jammers Brickyard and Annie Swanson did the work to keep the Arch lead, Ohio blockers Lora “Outa My” Wayman and Amy Spears did their best to hold them back. Gang Green Falls to the St. Lunachix

Once the dust settled from the charter bout between the Ohio Roller Girls and the Arch Rival All Stars that came down to the final jam, it was up to Gang Green and the St. Lunachix to settle an overall 1-1 record against each other in a pivotal rubber match.  Fielding a team with under ten skaters, Gang Green called upon veterans Bigg Rigg and Paige Bleed to help out in the battle of reserve squads.  Also of note, this bout marked the return to action of original OHRG member, HellionBOI, as she laced her skates for the first time in over a year due to the rehabilitation of a knee injury.    Even with the assistance from Rigg and Paige, the four jammer rotation of Chokehold Chanel, Enya Nightmare, Molecular Mayhem, and Warpath O’Jen was more than enough for the St. Lunachix to keep their jammers fresh and rested.  With nothing to lose, Gang Green threw everything, and everyone, at the St. Louis squad, including nine different jammers.  Gang Green was able to hang with the St. Lunachix throughout the first half after drawing five jammer penalties on the home squad and only trailed 128-74 at the half.  Unfortunately for

(20) OHIO AND (27) ARCH RIVAL TO CLASH IN ST. LOUIS

On August 9th, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will once again hit the road to take on a familiar foe, the (27) Arch Rival Roller Girls in St. Louis, Missouri.  OHRG and Arch Rival have one of the fiercest rivalries in the WFTDA over the past few years, as they have consistently faced each other during the regular season as well as playoffs.  They first met back in St. Louis in 2011, when Arch Rival was victorious 147-69.  Arch Rival then visited Columbus for a closed hangover bout in 2012 when OHRG took the victory 168-115.  Later that year, Ohio upset Arch Rival at the North Central Playoffs 142-132.  Arch again found their winning ways during the 2013 regular season when they defeated Ohio in St. Louis 179-108… but it was the OHRG who got the last laugh at the Division One Playoffs where they again upset ARRG 218-166. Both Ohio and Arch Rival have experienced roster changes during the off season and have dealt with different lineups throughout the season, but both essentially remain the same teams that the other knows extremely well.  Playing five bouts over three years has allowed these teams to become very familiar with the other’s

OHIO BRINGS THE HEAT AGAINST BUFFALO’S LAKE EFFECT FURIES, 239-109

After the last few games away from home, the Ohio Roller Girls were happy to return to the Lausche Building to take on Queen City Roller Girls’ Lake Effect Furies from Buffalo, NY.  The last time these two teams faced off, the Furies found themselves on the losing end. While Ohio is ranked #22 in the WFTDA to Buffalo's #48, OHRG were still prepared to meet strong opposing players from northern New York. With The Smacktivist up against Queen City’s Librawlian in the first jam, it could have been a strong start for either team.  Mack was able to take lead and the first four points of the game before calling the jam off.  Thanks to smart blocking by Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin, Burnadeath, and Ena Flash, that four point lead would only increase, never allowing space for a lead change.  In fact, it took until the fifth jam for Queen City to get on the scoreboard, courtesy of Librawlian. Queen City took lead jammer status for the majority of the first half. GANG GREEN TRUMPS THE DESTRUCTION DAMES 250-93

While it wasn’t as bad as Gang Green’s 308-70 victory over the Demolition City Destruction Dames earlier this season, the 250-93 defeat of the Dames in Columbus last weekend had pretty much the same feel.  At first it appeared Gang Green might have a battle on their hands as Demolition City kept the bout tight for the first five minutes thanks to charter team members Godjilla and Jetsy Rockette playing with the reserve squad.  However, a 17-0 jam by Blitz Lemon on the period’s sixth jam gave Gang Green a lead they would never relinquish.  Lemon would have a career bout as she led all scorers with 122 points, nearly half of Gang Green’s total, thus earning her Most Valuable Jammer for Gang Green. Equally as impressive as Lemon’s performance on the jammer line was the physical play by Gang Green’s pack.  In the first half, the Destruction Dames were able to obtain lead jammer ten times of the twenty-four jams.  Tough defensive Gang Green walls stymied Dames jammers, and more often than not, kept them on their initial pass.  With only 54 points at halftime for the Dames, Gang Green’s defense only allowed a 5+ point jam twice in the

(22) OHIO WELCOMES BUFFALO’S (48) QUEEN CITY ROLLER GIRLS

GET TICKETS TO TOMORROW'S BOUT HERE. The (22) Ohio Roller Girls had something this past week that they haven’t had in quite a while… a week off.  Coming off a three bout stint in Boston two weeks ago, OHRG will be back within the friendly confines of the Lausche Building as they welcome in Buffalo’s Queen City Roller Girls this Saturday evening.  Our Columbus squad returned from Massachusetts with a 2-1 weekend record as they upset (11) Boston 223-190, defeated New Hampshire 208-100, and nearly upset (12) Montreal 196-164 (note: following last weekend, the new rankings were released and Boston and Montreal are now ranked #17 and #16 respectively).  Overall, the Ohio Roller Girls All Stars are 7-5 in 2014. The Queen City Roller Girls will make the 5.5 hour drive to Columbus this weekend before they too enter the final stretch of their 2014 season.  The Lake Effect Furies will also have a little revenge on their minds, as they were defeated by the Ohio Roller Girls last year in Toronto at the Quad City Chaos tournament, 211-125.  Although the point differential at the end of that bout was 86 points, Queen City trailed Ohio by only 24 points halfway through

OHIO TAKES ON THREE TEAMS IN BOSTON

All Stars vs Boston Massacre After a weekend away in Milwaukee, WI at the Midwest BrewHaHa, the Ohio Roller Girls All Stars packed up their gear and headed to Boston to take on three different teams in 24 hours. First up: the Boston Derby Dames’ Boston Massacre. Ohio drew first blood, but it didn't last long as Boston soon gained a lead  they would hold onto for the entirety of the first half. Boston would earn lead jammer for 10 out of 21 jams, often gaining points and calling it before Ohio's jammers could do the same.  Ohio was down 63-104 at halftime despite hard defensive work from blockers like Burnadeath, Lora "Outa My" Wayman, and Ena Flash. The second half started out much like the first. Despite solid blocking efforts from skaters like Amy Spears, Jesse "Ava Tarr" Fox, and Sk8 Crime, Boston kept adding up the points until the 6th jam, when Boston's Lil’ Paine was sent to the penalty box for a back block. Ohio’s jammer, Burnadeath took advantage, quickly racking up 29 points as Lil’ Paine was called on a second back block.
