(24) Ohio Defeats (32) Syndicate

The (24) Ohio Roller Girls played a tune-up bout against the (32) Chicago Outfit Syndicate this past weekend before they head out for a difficult road bout against Steel City on August 10th.  Historically, OHRG is 1-2 against the Syndicate, first suffering a loss at Chicago in 2010 (172-34), then again at the 2011 BrewHaHa tournament (68-147) before redeeming themselves at home in 2012 (164-97).  This past weekend’s 273-106 drubbing over the Chicago Outfit took Ohio’s record to 13-5 this season with two bouts to go before they head to Ft. Wayne (IN) for the WFTDA Division I playoffs in September.  The Chicago Outfit will also compete in Division I post-season play, but a little further west in Salem (OR). The Ohio Roller Girls took the lead on the first jam and never looked back, thanks to clock-eating power jams and a staunch, powerful defense.  Ohio’s Phoenix Bunz scored the first four points of the bout before Lola Blow cut the OHRG lead in half 2-4 on the next jam.  Three double-digit jams over the next five outings saw the Ohio lead skyrocket quickly to 73-15 after only nine minutes.  During that time, Ohio received three power jams and saw The

GANG GREEN FALLS TO SHADE BRIGADE

Last season, Ohio's Gang Green handily defeated the Chicago Outfit Shade Brigade 202-85 in Columbus.  Unfortunately for Gang Green, they would not relieve the exuberance of last season’s victory as they fell to the Shade Brigade 128-199.  The first half was highlighted by big scoring runs by both squads, a 43-0 run by the Shade Brigade to start the bout and a 51-0 run by Ohio to follow.  The bout started as the Outfit’s Jenergizer Bunny got things rolling by posting a 20-0 power jam after a Paige Bleed track cut.  Outfit’s Graves added four before Ante Madder scored five after breaking her collarbone mid-jam.  Four more by Graves and ten by Scream Printer quickly took the Shade Brigade’s lead to 43-0 seven minutes into the contest. Advantageous on the power jam, Gang Green’s Burnadeath got Ohio on the board with a 20-0 jam.  The next four jams saw Gang Green’s defense hold the Outfit scoreless while allowing Burnadeath to add a 15 point power jam.  Including scores by Paige Bleed and Ally McSqueal, Gang Green took the lead 51-43 with 15:30 remaining in the first half. Gang Green’s lead didn’t last long as the Shade Brigade reclaimed the lead for good

NAPTOWN FALLS TO OHIO 106-232, QUALIFIES FOR PLAYOFFS

The (17 DNN, 18 WFTDA) Naptown Roller Girls were in desperate need of a bout to qualify for the 2013 playoffs after the unexpected cancellation of their June bout, leaving them one Division I bout away from qualifying for playoffs (primarily due to their bouts against Cincinnati and Windy City being unsanctioned). True to their motto of “Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime,” the (23 DNN, 20 WFTDA) Ohio Roller Girls agreed to play the ladies from Indianapolis at their Columbus practice facility Wednesday night.  Even with the bout scheduled on short notice, both squads were able to field their primary teams as Ohio soundly defeated Naptown 232-106.  The bout and victory for Ohio not only ensured that Naptown would be playing in the post-season, but it was a bout Ohio wanted after losing to Naptown 86-222 with a short roster at last year’s Thrill of the Spill. The bout kicked off as Ohio’s Phoenix Bunz was sent to the box for a back block on the third jam. (23) Ohio Welcomes the Blue Ridge Rollergirls; Game Moved to Lausche Building

This Saturday, the (23) Ohio Roller Girls welcome the Blue Ridge Rollergirls All-Stars from Asheville, North Carolina.  Also in action, Gang Green will lace their skates against Blue Ridge’s reserve squad, the French Broads.  Currently posting a record of 7-2 during their 2013 campaign, the Ohio Roller Girls are thankful to be back on their home track after playing three consecutive bouts on the road, two of which were against teams ranked ahead of them in the WFTDA standings. After defeating higher ranked Steel City at home in early April, OHRG traveled 1,050 miles as they visited River City (Richmond, VA) and (13) Charm City (Baltimore, MD).  The Ohioans were victorious against River City, but lost by an even 100 points to Charm City after being tied at halftime. This past weekend, Ohio upped their mileage again by traveling 836 miles to play the (12) Arch Rival Roller Girls (St. Louis, MO).  Missing key players Ava Tarr and Kill Basa, OHRG found it difficult to claim a road victory as they fell 108-179 this past weekend.  Bolstered by the return of Outa My Wayman as a full-time All Star player, the Ohio squad looks to get back to their winning ways this

OHRG Goes 1-1 on the Road

The (23) Ohio Roller Girls ended their 1,050 mile road trip with a decisive victory at Richmond (VA) over River City’s Poe’s Punishers 278-68, and with a disheartening loss in Baltimore (MD) to the (12) Charm City All-Stars 132-232. (23) OHRG DEFEATS RIVER CITY 278-68; THE SMACKTIVIST SCORES 115 POINTS Under the new divisional system the WFTDA has established this season, the Ohio Roller Girls are comfortably within the top 40 teams that make up Division I.  Currently ranked #75, River City is in Division II, needing to climb as high as #40 in order to qualify for the Division I playoffs.  A victory, or close loss, would have moved River City closer to that divisional cutoff.  The dreams of an upset over higher-ranked Ohio would not be in the cards for Poe’s Punishers as OHRG dominated the bout both physically, on the penalty board, and - most importantly - on the scoreboard. GANG GREEN ROOKIES HOST CORD

Ohio’s Gang Green rookie crew invited second year team Central Ohio Roller Dolls from Mt.Vernon to Columbus for a closed scrimmage on Tuesday night. I'm proud of our ladies, CORD had some really strong walls. Though CORD was missing their star jammers, the blockers pulling double duty never said die! - Chainsaw Central Ohio was set back from the start, as their top three jammers ShaSam, PB Slammer, and Slapajawea were unable to make the trip with the Dolls. It was amazing to see what the rookies could do on their own out there. They stepped it up and took charge on all fronts. It was hard to contain myself at times because I was so happy with their teamwork and communication. - Ava Tarr Up next for Gang Green, a road trip to Richmond (VA) and Baltimore (MD) to take on the River City Uncivil Warriors and the Charm City Female Trouble.  They’ll be home again on May 11th as they take on the Blue Ridge Rollergirls from Asheville, North Carolina. Happy Birthday, Ohio Roller Girls!

The Ohio Roller Girls, originally the brainchild of Melissa Wallace (Scarlette Fury), had its first organizational meeting April 23, 2005 at a local pizza shop. Recruitment continued throughout the summer of 2005, and by winter the league had about 30 skaters practicing regularly. OHRG also was one of the founding leagues of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), what has become the skater-run international governing body of women's roller derby. In December 2005, the league hosted an exhibition bout at a skating rink. Titled “Skatemare Before Christmas,” the game pitted the Jingle Belles v. the Roller Ghouls. Each year after, this match-up is revived as a “just-for-fun” charity benefit game at the end of the competitive season. You can read a recap of the very first Skatemare here. After a year of running drills and gaining their skate legs, The Ohio Roller Girls hosted their first home teams bout on April 23, 2006, exactly one year after their inaugural meeting! The bout was aptly dubbed "First Blood." For the first three years, competition was mainly focused on four home teams: the Band of Brawlers, Blackeye Bullies, Sprockettes and the Take-Outs. (23) OHRG ROADTRIP: RIVER CITY AND (12) CHARM CITY

This weekend, the Ohio Roller Girls will travel 1,052 round-trip miles for a tough double-header on the road against two teams they have only faced once before.  The #23 in the world Ohio squad will first lace their skates in Richmond, Virginia. They will be welcomed by the #75 River City Rollergirls, where Poe’s Punishers look to put the first notch in Ohio’s loss column in 2013.  OHRG will then drive up I-95 and take on a heavily favored #12 Charm City Roller Girls squad on Sunday in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ohio Roller Girls are currently 6-0 in 2013 and recently came off a huge win over a higher ranked Steel City squad earlier this month (246-162).  The trip to Richmond will mark the second time the Ohioans will face the River City girls as River City came to Columbus last season for OHRG’s 2012 home opener.  Outsized, OHRG fought their way to a 126 point victory in front of the home crowd, 196-70. This season, River City’s Poe’s Punishers are 1-4, but have played higher caliber teams than in previous seasons.  They started their 2013 season with a narrow 13 point loss to the Carolina Rollergirls (177-164).  Carolina was the only

(23) OHIO ROLLER GIRLS UPEND (22) STEEL CITY 246-162

In one of the most anticipated bouts of April, the (23) Ohio Roller Girls defended their home track against the visiting (22) Steel City Steel Hurtin' crew from Pittsburgh 246-162.  The bout was actually a lot closer than the score indicates, but Ohio was able to take full advantage of their power jam time.  While Ohio only enjoyed two more power jams than Steel City, they were able to outscore their visitors 171-65 with the jammer advantage. Steel Hurtin' was hindered even before the start of the bout, as 'Snot Rocket Science and Hurricane Heather were not rostered for the contest. The bout started as Steel Hurtin's Hard Times took the line against Ohio's Phoenix Bunz.  Hard Times was sent to the penalty box for a high block and Bunz capitalized by scoring 20-0.  Hard Times was again boxed on the second jam for an illegal re-entry to the track and then an insubordination penalty for not leaving the track quickly enough, and  Ohio's The Smacktivist tallied a 30-0 jam as a result.  Three jams later, Ohio's Loraine Acid took advantage of a broken skate by Steel Hurtin's jammer, The Crippler, and scored 40-0, taking Ohio to 92-2 only 9:00 into the

Ohio Dominates Quad City Chaos in Toronto

The Ohio Roller Girls traveled to Toronto last weekend to take part in the Quad City Chaos tournament. A round-robin event, Ohio faced Toronto, Rideau Valley, and Queen City. Ohio Edges Out Toronto's CN Power The OHRG All Stars kicked the weekend off with a win over CN Power. Ohio got off to a strong start, with Phoenix Bunz and the Smacktivist racking up 4 points each. Solid pack work from Ohio's Ava Tarr, Bratislava Bruiser, Loraine Acid, and Pippi RipYourStockings held CNP jammers Kookie Doe and Motorhead Molly (a former Tri-City skater) back in the first two jams. Not to be outdone, Bambi and Motorhead Molly each respectively sped through the pack to quickly answer for CN Power, shifting the score to 12-8.  Although Kookie Doe was sent to the penalty box on a track cut the following jam, Ohio's Loraine Acid had trouble with Bruiseberry Pie and Nasher the Smasher, who forced their own track cut, releasing Kookie Doe from the box. Kookie Doe successfully called off the jam despite not being lead jammer and was sent back to the box for an illegal procedure penalty.
