(31) Ohio To Kick Off Season 11 against (56) Ann Arbor

Ohio Roller Derby starts their campaign for a sixth straight postseason berth this weekend as they welcome the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes to Columbus for the 2016 season opener. Ohio, currently ranked #31 in the world according to the most recent WFTDA rankings release, has never played Ann Arbor prior to this season. The Ann Arbor Brawlstars, currently ranked #56, have simply been shooting up the rankings over the past season. To give you an idea of their upward trajectory, the Brawlstars were ranked #85 at the beginning of the 2015 season. Currently at #56, Ann Arbor already qualifies for the Division II playoffs as long as they stay in the top 60. Jumping 29 places in the rankings over a twelve month period is a testament to the talent that is on the Brawlstar squad. Much of the Ann Arbor roster is still intact from last season, meaning they haven’t had to worry about transfers or retirements. A main reason for their rise in rank is the fact that they have a very deep bench. Ann Arbor uses a five jammer rotation, and all five are capable of putting up a lot of points on the board. Official Name Change to Ohio Roller Derby!

Ohio Roller Derby (OHRD) is proud to officially announce our decision to drop the gender specific “Girls” from the league’s name. The change from “Ohio Roller Girls” to “Ohio Roller Derby” is just one of many steps OHRD has taken to better represent the league’s members, and the diversity of skaters, referees, and volunteers of roller derby in general. Ohio Roller Derby promotes inclusiveness based on the self-identification of our skater and volunteer members alike. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, of which Ohio Roller Derby is a founding member, recently expanded its gender policy and broadened its protections for athlete gender identity. As OHRD continues to grow, it has become evident that identifying as the “Ohio Roller Girls” may feel non-inclusive to some in our league or community. With the name change, Ohio Roller Derby has chosen to remove gender-specific wording to show our support for all members and volunteers who identify as female, male, transgender, non-cisgendered women, and gender-expansive. Ohio Roller Derby is made up of so many unique and wonderful people, and someone’s self-identification shouldn’t factor into whether or not they feel they belong. OHIO ALL STARS FINISH 6-0 HOME SEASON WITH 216-158 VICTORY OVER NAPTOWN TORNADO SIRENS

The Ohio Roller Girls wrapped up their tenth home season with a sold-out triple header against Naptown Roller Girls (Indianapolis, IN). Throngs of fans for both teams packed the Ohio Building to capacity for a high-energy day of roller derby. Ohio's C-level team, Green Machine, kicked things off with a developmental game against Naptown's Third Alarm, followed by the highly anticipated rematches between the Ohio All Stars & the Naptown Tornado Sirens, and Gang Green & the Naptown Warning Belles. For the second time in less than five months, the Ohio Roller Girls took the track against the Naptown Roller Girls Tornado Sirens, this time on home turf and eager to emerge victorious after their 182-132 loss to the Indianapolis team in April. Naptown took a quick 3-0 lead in the first jam, but The Smacktivist responded by lapping the opposing jammer and giving Ohio their first lead change of the game, 9-3. Four consecutive lead jammer statuses gave Naptown the upper hand, and allowed them to temporarily halt Ohio's scoring. Gang Green Muted by Warning Belles

Looking to take after their Charter Team counterparts, Ohio’s Gang Green also aimed to avenge an earlier season loss to Naptown.  Unfortunately for Gang Green, the season split was not to be, as Naptown’s Warning Belles were victorious, 181-129, in a bout that wasn’t quite decided until the final few jams.  The bout started strong for both teams as Naptown jammers Pirouette Threat, Scorpiopathic, and Lysis 2 Kill obtained lead status on five of the bout’s first six jams.  With that type of advantage, teams would typically rack up an abundance of points; however, Naptown was only able to capitalize minimally due to Gang Green’s strong defense.  Slammerhead, Garden of Beatin’, Adams and KloverKill bent but didn’t break as they allowed no more than four points each jam and only trailed 15-2 after six jams. Points were nickel-and-dimed for the majority of the bout as Gang Green jammers TactiGal, Karmabal Lector, HellionBOI, and Blitz Lemon basically matched those posted by their competitors.  With 7:00 remaining in the first half, Naptown held a slim three-point lead 41-38.  Strong defense by Warning Belles blockers Crash N2U, Eve Anne Hellical, and Flannery O’Clobber was then able to hold Karmabal Lector on her initial pass

(34) Ohio Battles (48) Naptown Roller Girls in Season Ending Triple Header

Ohio and Naptown’s Tornado Sirens will take the track in a rematch of a bout played in Indianapolis back in April.  In that bout, Ohio held a slim lead at halftime before a second half comeback by the Sirens secured the win for Naptown, 182-132.  Their bout against Ohio was one of three non-sanctioned bouts Naptown played during their 14 bout, 2015 season.  Including those three non-sanctioned bouts, Naptown has an overall record of 7-6, with the upcoming bout against Ohio being their fourteenth contest. After slipping in the rankings, The Tornado Sirens will be playing at the WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Detroit on August 28-30th.  Naptown started the season ranked as high as 26th in the WFTDA but tough losses to Charm City, Arizona, Arch Rival, and Detroit caused the slide to where they currently sit in the rankings.  However, don’t let the fact that Naptown is now in Division 2 and ranked lower than Ohio fool you.  In fact, Naptown still holds the advantage over Ohio with a 4-2 overall record against the local squad including that victory earlier this season.  Alongside the added pressure of trying to beat a team that has historically had their number, the

OHIO TOURS THE MUSIC CITY FOR CLASH AGAINST NASHVILLE

The Ohio Roller Girls will boot, scoot, and boogie their way southwest this weekend for a tough bout against the Nashville Rollergirls.  The matchup will be the third meeting between these two teams, with both squads each winning once on their home turf.  Nashville took the first ever matchup in Tennessee, 166-43, back in 2010, while Ohio served up some home-cooking last season in Columbus, 194-128.  With final rankings and tournament seedings being released, both teams will have to channel their inner Spinal Tap, dig deep for that little extra, and turn it to “eleven” if they want positive momentum headed into playoffs. The Nashville Rollergirls have fallen from Division 1 into Division 2 this season, but it wasn’t because the team has taken a step back talent-wise.  With a 2015 record of 5-7, Nashville’s Music City All Stars have committed themselves to playing a stronger schedule this year than in season’s past.  Riding a three bout win streak with victories against Columbia (SC), Cincinnati (OH), and Providence (RI), Nashville also has victories over Blue Ridge (NC) and St. Chux (MO).  Their losses came to Boston (MA), Charlottesville (VA), Arch Rival (MO), and Naptown (IN).  Most recently, the Music City All

(29) OHIO DEFUSES (69) FT. WAYNE DERBY GIRLS’ BOMB SQUAD, 266-72

Coming home from a long, hard weekend on the road at BrewHaHa, the Ohio Roller Girls looked to clinch a win over Ft. Wayne Derby Girls' Bomb Squad (IN) during their second-to-last home game of the season, and did not disappoint the crowd of fans & OHRG alumni in attendance. Ohio played fast and aggressive from the first whistle, taking the lead with 4 points in the first 40 seconds and holding that lead well out of Ft. Wayne's reach for the entirety of the game. Ft. Wayne lost two blockers to the penalty box at the end of the first jam, and a high block call on PushyCat at the start of jam two gave Kitty Liquorbottom plenty of room to score 15 points before calling it off. Ft. Wayne managed to get on the board, but Ohio held their scoring to a minimum even when the Indiana jammers obtained lead status. In jam seven, Ohio held the rear, with Burnadeath sticking to Dodger L. Bows & holding her on her initial pass before drawing a track cut penalty; Lora “Outa My” Wayman, donning the star for Ohio for the first time in the game, easily racked up 20 points

GANG GREEN NEUTRALIZES BURNING RIVER’S HAZMAT CREW 219-84

As the Ohio Roller Girls celebrated their tenth anniversary this weekend, it was Gang Green that turned things up to eleven as they provided that little extra oomph during a 219-84 victory over visiting HazMat Crew, the reserve squad from Burning River Roller Derby.  Following what was a close bout during the first seven jams, Gang Green was able to capture the lead in the eighth jam and never look back.  Stout defense by Gang Green blockers Quiet Storm, NiCold N Deadly, Zinnia Zombie, and Garden of Beatin repeatedly held back HazMat jammers while opening holes for their own jammers throughout the first half. After finding themselves down 19-20 after jam seven, Val Holla put Gang Green ahead with a 9-0 jam of her own.  Toeing the inside line off the jam start in the next jam, KloverKill added an additional 4-0 to increase Gang Green’s lead to 32-20.  Powerful subsequent jamming by Gang Green’s HellionBOI, Karmabal Lector, and Blitz Lemon paired with even better blocking by Gang Green’s pack players enabled the home squad to go on a 48-5 run that spanned nine jams and thirteen minutes.  With 9:30 remaining in the first half, Gang Green held a 67-25 lead.

OHRG CELEBRATES A DECADE OF DERBY

This weekend marks a decade of derby for the Ohio Roller Girls, and they’ll celebrate by welcoming in the Ft. Wayne Derby Girls’ Bomb Squad and Burning River Roller Derby’s HazMat Crew for an action-packed double header at the Ohio Building on Saturday.  The weekend celebration calls for all OHRG skating/officiating/and other volunteer alumni to come back and see what their hard work has built over the past ten years. The (29) Ohio Roller Girls are coming off a tough three day weekend in Milwaukee (WI) where they participated in the 6th annual Midwest BrewHaHa invitational.  Ohio had one of the toughest schedules out of all the participating teams as they faced the (14) Arch Rival Roller Girls (St. Louis), (7) Minnesota RollerGirls (St. Paul), and (23) Tampa Roller Derby.  OHRG fought hard, but eventually went 0-3 over the weekend taking their overall 2015 record to 6-6 in sanctioned WFTDA play.  BrewHaHa marks the first time Ohio has lost three consecutive bouts since 2012.  Your local squad looks to bounce back this weekend as they’ll take on the (69) Ft. OHIO TRAVELS FOR MIDWEST BREWHAHA

For the sixth consecutive year, the Ohio Roller Girls will travel to Milwaukee (WI) for Midwest BrewHaHa, a three day invitational featuring WFTDA charter bouts, WFTDA reserve team action, men’s roller derby (MRDA), and junior competition.  This year, the (22) Ohio Roller Girls will have their collective hands full, as they have perhaps one of the toughest schedules of any team at the event.  On Friday at 2:15 p.m., Ohio will take the track against the undefeated (18) Arch Rival Roller Girls, and on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., Ohio will play the (6) Minnesota RollerGirls.  Finally, Ohio will skate against (23) Tampa Roller Derby on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.  Ohio will definitely be tested as they look to finish the regular season in the top 20, and avoid the dreaded #6 vs #3 seed opening round bout at playoffs. Ohio’s first opponent this weekend, the (18) Arch Rival Roller Girls, have been on an absolute tear this season.  After picking up transfer skaters Bricktator from Bay Area Derby Girls, and Harmony Killerbruise from Minnesota, Arch appears to have found a couple of skaters who can help the squad make a push for their first ever appearance at the WFTDA Championship
