OHIO SPLITS WINS WITH NAPTOWN TO KICK OFF SEASON TWELVE

After a road trip to Indianapolis in February, Ohio Roller Derby began their twelfth home season with a doubleheader rematch against Naptown Roller Derby. In their tenth meeting in nearly eight years, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars looked for a more decisive win than their most recent 147-145 victory over the Naptown Roller Derby Tornado Sirens, while Gang Green aimed to beat Naptown’s B-team, the Warning Belles, for the first time since 2009. (35) OHIO FALLS JUST SHORT OF (31) NAPTOWN, 149-162 Knowing that the track to victory would be hard-fought and every single point could prove crucial, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars launched a rapid assault from the first whistle, with Gorges Curves and Pain Train opening a 17-0 lead in their first home jams for Ohio. Naptown tied up the score over the next two jams, then forced the first lead change of the game in jam 6. Pain Train grabbed lead status in the following jam as Naptown gave up the first power jam opportunity of the period, and posted 14 unanswered points to retake a 37-26 lead. OHIO FINISHES 2016 SEASON WITH 1-2 RUN AT PLAYOFFS

From a strict win-loss pattern perspective, Ohio’s performance at the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Madison, WI looked eerily similar to their trips to D1s in Evansville, IN in 2014 and Dallas, TX in 2015: a tough loss to a higher-seeded team in their first game on Friday, a much more closely contested loss in the consolation bracket on Saturday, and a sound victory in their final game on Sunday. As teams at Playoffs only know for sure who their first opponent will be, Ohio needed to be prepared not only to play Windy City in Game 1, but any of the other eight teams in the tournament over the course of the weekend, from #10 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls to the #1-ranked team in the world, Gotham. Of the 16 skaters playing for Ohio over the course of the weekend, 13 had skated at D1s in previous years, giving the team a veteran advantage with a good dose of fresh blood in both the blocker & jammer rotations. OHIO HEADS TO WFTDA DIVISION 1 PLAYOFFS

For the fourth straight year, Ohio Roller Derby has qualified for WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs, showing their mettle as one of the top 40 teams in the world. With the implementation of the divisional system in 2013, Ohio exploded into Division 1, placing second at Playoffs and reaching the quarterfinals at Championships. They have returned to D1 Playoffs each year since, and this year will enter as the #9 seed at the final D1 tournament in Madison, WI. Hosted by the #10 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls, the tournament will also see gameplay from Gotham Girls Roller Derby, Arch Rival Roller Derby, Minnesota RollerGirls, Tampa Roller Derby, Team United, Helsinki Roller Derby, No Coast Derby Girls, and Ohio’s first opponent of the weekend, Windy City Rollers. While Ohio and Windy are next door neighbors on the current WFTDA rankings and have each played 12 sanctioned games this season, the two have had rather different journeys from last year’s postseason to now. In 2015, Windy rolled into Playoffs ranked 20 overall, but dropped into Division 3 by the end of the year and remained there until April; since then, they’ve methodically climbed back into Division 1 and will hit Playoffs ranked 32nd. OHIO DISPATCHES KILLAMAZOO IN PACKED HOME CLOSER

Preparing to shift gears and hit the road for the remainder of their eleventh season, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars easily wrapped up their second consecutive undefeated home season with a blowout win against the Killamazoo Derby Darlins Kill Stars. Gang Green followed suit, doubling down on the KDD Killa Crew in the second game of the night to complete a 5-1 home season. (36) OHIO SHUTS DOWN THE KILL STARS, 380-46 The magical combination of consistent lead jammer status and stalwart blocking gave Ohio an immediate advantage, as The Smacktivist, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, Blitz Lemon, Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin, Val Holla, and Betty T. KayO snagged lead in 21 out of 23 jams in the first half. Meanwhile, Ohio’s blocking core held Killamazoo scoreless for the first 9 minutes of the game, only giving up points in 4 jams. A quick succession of 3- and 4-point jams gave Ohio a clean 25-0 lead before a 3-3 jam put the Kill Stars on the board in jam 9. OHIO SPLITS GAMES AGAINST TRI-CITY

Upholding a near-annual tradition, Ohio Roller Derby hosted Tri-City Roller Derby for the third year running. The All Stars held a 4-0 record over the skaters from Kitchener, Ontario, and were victorious again, improving to a 5-1 season record. In the second game of the night, Gang Green looked to bolster their 2-1 record over TCRD’s Plan B, but ultimately fell short in their first loss of the season. (41) OHIO STORMS PAST (47) TRI-CITY THUNDER, 258-129 From the first whistle of the game, the Ohio All Stars held a firm grip on the lead over the Tri-City Thunder, matching points with or outscoring the Canadian team in 74% of jams. Lora “Outa My” Wayman, The Smacktivist , and Bigg Rigg gave Ohio big boosts with eleven double-digit jams, and clean gameplay on both sides meant full packs, brawny defense, and tough battles for lead jammer status. Tri-City’s defense held The Smacktivist for 35 seconds in the first jam before they got out for a quick 4 points, and with the first penalty of the game assessed to the TCRD jammer in jam 4, they posted 23 unanswered points to give Ohio a 31-5 lead. GANG GREEN NEUTRALIZES BURNING RIVER’S HAZMAT CREW 219-84

As the Ohio Roller Girls celebrated their tenth anniversary this weekend, it was Gang Green that turned things up to eleven as they provided that little extra oomph during a 219-84 victory over visiting HazMat Crew, the reserve squad from Burning River Roller Derby.  Following what was a close bout during the first seven jams, Gang Green was able to capture the lead in the eighth jam and never look back.  Stout defense by Gang Green blockers Quiet Storm, NiCold N Deadly, Zinnia Zombie, and Garden of Beatin repeatedly held back HazMat jammers while opening holes for their own jammers throughout the first half. After finding themselves down 19-20 after jam seven, Val Holla put Gang Green ahead with a 9-0 jam of her own.  Toeing the inside line off the jam start in the next jam, KloverKill added an additional 4-0 to increase Gang Green’s lead to 32-20.  Powerful subsequent jamming by Gang Green’s HellionBOI, Karmabal Lector, and Blitz Lemon paired with even better blocking by Gang Green’s pack players enabled the home squad to go on a 48-5 run that spanned nine jams and thirteen minutes.  With 9:30 remaining in the first half, Gang Green held a 67-25 lead.

Gang Green Collapses Pittsburgh’s Steel Beamers 174-127

After watching the Ohio Roller Girls charter team take down the Steel Hurtin’ 216-191, Gang Green did everything they could to make sure their bout against Pittsburgh’s reserve squad wouldn’t be as close.  It’s always a tough match when Steel City and Ohio meet, and Gang Green quickly found themselves in a battle that made the several hundred spectators in attendance cheer for the efforts put forth by everyone involved.  The first ten jams of the contest went back and forth between Gang Green and the Steel Beamers.  Jams lasted an average of one minute, and just ten minutes into the bout, the two reserve squads exchanged leads a total of five times.  With 19:15 remaining in the first period, Gang Green clung to a slim 24-17 lead.    On the period’s eleventh jam, Gang Green’s Sarah Bruce rattled off a 20-0 power jam with Shrinking Violet in the penalty box for a high block.  Two jams later, it was Val Holla knocking Hot Lips Bruise’ihan out of bounds, allowing HellionBOI the opportunity to get lead and secure a 2-0 jam.  Hellion’s jam took Gang Green’s lead to 54-18.  Clean play by both squads over the next ten jams didn’t yield

GANG GREEN TRUMPS THE DESTRUCTION DAMES 250-93

While it wasn’t as bad as Gang Green’s 308-70 victory over the Demolition City Destruction Dames earlier this season, the 250-93 defeat of the Dames in Columbus last weekend had pretty much the same feel.  At first it appeared Gang Green might have a battle on their hands as Demolition City kept the bout tight for the first five minutes thanks to charter team members Godjilla and Jetsy Rockette playing with the reserve squad.  However, a 17-0 jam by Blitz Lemon on the period’s sixth jam gave Gang Green a lead they would never relinquish.  Lemon would have a career bout as she led all scorers with 122 points, nearly half of Gang Green’s total, thus earning her Most Valuable Jammer for Gang Green. Equally as impressive as Lemon’s performance on the jammer line was the physical play by Gang Green’s pack.  In the first half, the Destruction Dames were able to obtain lead jammer ten times of the twenty-four jams.  Tough defensive Gang Green walls stymied Dames jammers, and more often than not, kept them on their initial pass.  With only 54 points at halftime for the Dames, Gang Green’s defense only allowed a 5+ point jam twice in the
