2018 Derby Resolutions

Happy 2018! With the first full week of post-break practice complete, we checked in with members of OHRD to see what plans they had for the upcoming season! Some common threads emerged: Putting more time into off-skates workouts and building derby skills, so we start the season right where we left off (or better!) Working on our mental game, both in playing smart and having fun. Encouraging each other, working together and supporting our teammates so that we are the best team we can be — which hopefully leads to a winning season with ALL the points! DUAL WINS FOR OHIO AGAINST BRANDYWINE

Rolling with renewed momentum following their trip to the Skate to Thrill invitational, Ohio Roller Derby returned to the Ohio Expo Center to spar with Brandywine Roller Derby, a first-time matchup for the two leagues. (35) OHIO SUBDUES (48) BRANDYWINE, 248-108 With 4 sanctioned games already under their skates this year, Ohio has begun to coalesce and fine tune their defense, giving them the leg up on the Brandywine Belligerents, who had not played a game since the 2016 International WFTDA Division 2 championship game last November. A short Brandywine roster also benefited Ohio, as mounting penalties and foul outs became an additional obstacle late in the second half. The Belligerents posted the first 4 points of the game, but Val Holla lit up the pack for 18 points in the second jam, giving Ohio a lead that they would never relinquish. Three jams later, Slammerhead forced Lurz Lemon into a track cut penalty, gifting Ohio the first power jam opportunity of the game and a 9-point gain; Brandywine found their own power jam moments later, grinding out 14 points after Ohio lost lead status on a low block call. OHIO SPLITS WINS WITH NAPTOWN TO KICK OFF SEASON TWELVE

After a road trip to Indianapolis in February, Ohio Roller Derby began their twelfth home season with a doubleheader rematch against Naptown Roller Derby. In their tenth meeting in nearly eight years, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars looked for a more decisive win than their most recent 147-145 victory over the Naptown Roller Derby Tornado Sirens, while Gang Green aimed to beat Naptown’s B-team, the Warning Belles, for the first time since 2009. (35) OHIO FALLS JUST SHORT OF (31) NAPTOWN, 149-162 Knowing that the track to victory would be hard-fought and every single point could prove crucial, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars launched a rapid assault from the first whistle, with Gorges Curves and Pain Train opening a 17-0 lead in their first home jams for Ohio. Naptown tied up the score over the next two jams, then forced the first lead change of the game in jam 6. Pain Train grabbed lead status in the following jam as Naptown gave up the first power jam opportunity of the period, and posted 14 unanswered points to retake a 37-26 lead. OHIO DISPATCHES KILLAMAZOO IN PACKED HOME CLOSER

Preparing to shift gears and hit the road for the remainder of their eleventh season, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars easily wrapped up their second consecutive undefeated home season with a blowout win against the Killamazoo Derby Darlins Kill Stars. Gang Green followed suit, doubling down on the KDD Killa Crew in the second game of the night to complete a 5-1 home season. (36) OHIO SHUTS DOWN THE KILL STARS, 380-46 The magical combination of consistent lead jammer status and stalwart blocking gave Ohio an immediate advantage, as The Smacktivist, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, Blitz Lemon, Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin, Val Holla, and Betty T. KayO snagged lead in 21 out of 23 jams in the first half. Meanwhile, Ohio’s blocking core held Killamazoo scoreless for the first 9 minutes of the game, only giving up points in 4 jams. A quick succession of 3- and 4-point jams gave Ohio a clean 25-0 lead before a 3-3 jam put the Kill Stars on the board in jam 9. Tri-City Stamps Their Passports To Visit Ohio

This Saturday, the Ohio Roller Derby hosts Tri-City Roller Derby from Kitchener, Ontario, in a battle as both squads look to make the jump back into Division 1. In WFTDA, teams ranked 1-40 fall into the Division 1 playoff structure at the end of the season, with teams between 41-60 placed in the Division 2 playoffs. Ohio, currently ranked #41 after the most recent WFTDA rankings release, should jump back into the 30s next month as they look to continue their presence in the Division 1 postseason. Tri-City is currently ranked #47 and needs some favorable outcomes over the next few months to work their way back into the top 40. Currently 2-1 in their 2016 campaign, the Tri-City Thunder opened the season as a participant at Quad City Chaos, a weekend invitational hosted by Toronto Roller Derby in mid-March. At Quad City Chaos, the Thunder were victorious over Roller Derby Quebec 193-139, and against the Toronto All Stars 207-158. The Thunder’s lone setback at Chaos was against the Queen City Roller Girls, 209-71, a team they’ll have a rematch with in May at the Tri-City-hosted Beaver Fever Invitational. OHIO ALL STARS GO 2-1 AT SKATE TO THRILL

For their first road games of the 2016 season, (41) Ohio Roller Derby packed in 3 tough games in just under 30 hours at the second annual Skate to Thrill tournament. The weekend kicked off with a tough loss to (25) No Coast Derby Girls on Saturday morning, followed by a single-point, last-second win over (44) Houston Roller Derby that afternoon and a landslide victory against (42) Chicago Outfit Roller Derby on Sunday. While missing a few skaters from their usual roster, Ohio was certainly not lacking in tenacity in any of the three games. SWAMPED BY NO COAST, 125-261 Despite the point disparity by the end of the contest, Ohio did not allow No Coast to take the win with any ease. After the first four jams, No Coast held a 20-9 lead, but The Smacktivist put up 27 points in jam 5 for the first lead change of the game; the second came halfway through the first period, as No Coast carved out a narrow 3-point edge, 55-52. The Nebraska squad halted Ohio’s scoring momentum for several jams before a penalty to jammer Anna Cassube gave The Smacktivist time to play a bit of catch up; No Coast still held

(31) Ohio To Kick Off Season 11 against (56) Ann Arbor

Ohio Roller Derby starts their campaign for a sixth straight postseason berth this weekend as they welcome the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes to Columbus for the 2016 season opener. Ohio, currently ranked #31 in the world according to the most recent WFTDA rankings release, has never played Ann Arbor prior to this season. The Ann Arbor Brawlstars, currently ranked #56, have simply been shooting up the rankings over the past season. To give you an idea of their upward trajectory, the Brawlstars were ranked #85 at the beginning of the 2015 season. Currently at #56, Ann Arbor already qualifies for the Division II playoffs as long as they stay in the top 60. Jumping 29 places in the rankings over a twelve month period is a testament to the talent that is on the Brawlstar squad. Much of the Ann Arbor roster is still intact from last season, meaning they haven’t had to worry about transfers or retirements. A main reason for their rise in rank is the fact that they have a very deep bench. Ann Arbor uses a five jammer rotation, and all five are capable of putting up a lot of points on the board. Official Name Change to Ohio Roller Derby!

Ohio Roller Derby (OHRD) is proud to officially announce our decision to drop the gender specific “Girls” from the league’s name. The change from “Ohio Roller Girls” to “Ohio Roller Derby” is just one of many steps OHRD has taken to better represent the league’s members, and the diversity of skaters, referees, and volunteers of roller derby in general. Ohio Roller Derby promotes inclusiveness based on the self-identification of our skater and volunteer members alike. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, of which Ohio Roller Derby is a founding member, recently expanded its gender policy and broadened its protections for athlete gender identity. As OHRD continues to grow, it has become evident that identifying as the “Ohio Roller Girls” may feel non-inclusive to some in our league or community. With the name change, Ohio Roller Derby has chosen to remove gender-specific wording to show our support for all members and volunteers who identify as female, male, transgender, non-cisgendered women, and gender-expansive. Ohio Roller Derby is made up of so many unique and wonderful people, and someone’s self-identification shouldn’t factor into whether or not they feel they belong.
