TRIO OF TOUGH LOSSES FOR OHRG AT 6TH ANNUAL MIDWEST BREWHAHA

  In their sixth trip to Milwaukee in as many years, the Ohio Roller Girls had their work cut out for them as they rolled into the annual invitational hosted by the Brewcity Bruisers. With a smaller roster and more challenging schedule than many other teams competing at BrewHaHa, Ohio knew that the weekend would not be an easy one. Update WFTDA rankings released at the end of May dropped Ohio to 29, while Arch Rival climbed four spots to 14, Minnesota moved down a slot to 7, and Tampa held steady at 23. Despite these factors, Ohio fought fiercely, and refused to send their opponents home with easy wins. (29) OHIO FALLS TO (14) ARCH RIVAL, 367-41 For their first game of the weekend in Milwaukee, Ohio took on Arch Rival Roller Girls on Friday afternoon in what promised to be a challenging game. OHIO TRAVELS FOR MIDWEST BREWHAHA

For the sixth consecutive year, the Ohio Roller Girls will travel to Milwaukee (WI) for Midwest BrewHaHa, a three day invitational featuring WFTDA charter bouts, WFTDA reserve team action, men’s roller derby (MRDA), and junior competition.  This year, the (22) Ohio Roller Girls will have their collective hands full, as they have perhaps one of the toughest schedules of any team at the event.  On Friday at 2:15 p.m., Ohio will take the track against the undefeated (18) Arch Rival Roller Girls, and on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., Ohio will play the (6) Minnesota RollerGirls.  Finally, Ohio will skate against (23) Tampa Roller Derby on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.  Ohio will definitely be tested as they look to finish the regular season in the top 20, and avoid the dreaded #6 vs #3 seed opening round bout at playoffs. Ohio’s first opponent this weekend, the (18) Arch Rival Roller Girls, have been on an absolute tear this season.  After picking up transfer skaters Bricktator from Bay Area Derby Girls, and Harmony Killerbruise from Minnesota, Arch appears to have found a couple of skaters who can help the squad make a push for their first ever appearance at the WFTDA Championship

(19) Ohio To Host (33) Queen City and Hammer City Roller Girls

This weekend will mark the third time in as many years the Queen City Roller Girls (Buffalo) will face off against the Ohio Roller Girls, with the visitors looking for their first ever victory over the Columbus squad.  They first met at Toronto’s Quad City Chaos in 2013 where Ohio was victorious 211-125.  Ohio followed that up with a victory at home last season 239-109.  Currently 3-2 in sanctioned play this season, the Ohio Roller Girls will look to stay above .500 as they still have twelve bouts on their regular season schedule.  The OHRG are looking to snap a two-game skid that saw them lose a non-sanctioned bout to Naptown (Indianapolis) 182-132, then to Boston 281-136.  If history is any indication of how Ohio will fare this weekend, the outlook is good for the home squad.  Since June 2010, the Ohio Roller Girls are 29-1 with home track advantage, with their sole loss coming last season to Atlanta. Whereas Ohio has won their two previous bouts by a comfortable margin over Queen City, this bout has the feeling of a contest that could go either way.  The Buffalo squad has steadily improved over the past two seasons, making the WFTDA

GANG GREEN EDGED OUT DURING WEEKEND DOUBLE HEADER

CHARM CITY’S FEMALE TROUBLE RUNS AWAY LATE OVER GANG GREEN 171-102 Ohio’s Gang Green was a busy team this weekend, playing two bouts against an incredibly strong opponent at home, then the next day against one of the newest, fast-rising WFTDA Apprentice leagues on the road.  In the first bout of the weekend’s double-header, Gang Green welcomed in their opponents from Baltimore, the Charm City Roller Girls’ reserve squad, Female Trouble.  The bout started well for Gang Green, with swing-skater TactiGal notching six points in the first jam.  Held scoreless over the next three jams, however, Gang Green watched as the Female Trouble were able to gain a lead they would never relinquish by going up 22-6 just six minutes into the contest.  Obtaining lead jammer status at a ratio of 17:4 in the first half, Charm’s Female Trouble were able to dictate gameplay and control the clock for the opening thirty minutes.  A Red Pepper track cut forced by Gang Green’s Nicold N’ Deadly in the sixteenth jam closed the deficit to 26-47, but that was as close as the home squad could get before halftime.  Even with two back-to-back forearm penalties to Female Trouble jammers Federal Kill and Ela

(22) Ohio Squares Off Against (14) Charm City

With the tenth season of the Ohio Roller Girls currently underway, the Columbus-based skaters have hit the track running to celebrate a decade of derby in central Ohio.  With most teams in the WFTDA playing just at or under ten bouts per season, the Ohio Roller Girls will play over twenty games this year as they continue to play anyone, anytime, anywhere.  Their 2015 season starts with ten bouts over nine weeks with trips to Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Florida on their early season docket. The OHRG are currently 2-1 this season with a home opener victory over Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario) 257-122, and on the road in Michigan to the Killamazoo Derby Darlins 282-118.  Ohio suffered their first loss last Sunday during a hangover bout with the Detroit Derby Girls, 90-233.  The Ohio Roller Girls will look to stay above .500 as they welcome traditional WFTDA powerhouse Charm City (Baltimore) this weekend for their second home bout of the season. DIVISION 1 PLAYOFFS: FOR OHIO, THE TIME IS NOW!

(20) OHIO TO FACE (14) JACKSONVILLE AT D1 PLAYOFFS For the third consecutive year, the Ohio Roller Girls will enter the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs as a lower seed than their opponents.  Two years ago, Ohio was a #5 seed before upsetting #4 Arch Rival.  Last season, #6 Ohio again upset #3 Arch in the opening round before taking down #2 Montreal in the semifinals, thus earning Ohio their first ever trip to Championships.  This year, #5 Ohio again looks to play spoiler for the higher seed as they are scheduled to play the #4 Jacksonville Roller Girls’ New Jax City Rollers. Any talk about Ohio being in a rebuilding year this season has been squashed by this 2014 squad.  At this time last year, Ohio entered playoffs at #24 in the world.  This season, Ohio enters playoffs four ranking positions higher at #20.  That being said, Jacksonville will be one of Ohio’s biggest tests this season, as the winner will still face an uphill battle in order to qualify for Championships.  The top three finishers earn a trip to Champs, and with world ranked #3 London Rollergirls, #6 Texas Rollergirls, and the #11 Windy City Rollers also in Ohio’s bracket, the

Ohio Powers Past Steel City, 216-191

It is fitting that the Ohio Roller Girls’ last regular bout of the season was on Labor Day weekend, because the 216 – 191 victory over Steel City's (Pittsburgh) Steel Hurtin’ was a laborious battle from start to finish. Ohio’s special team play made the difference in a bout that seemed at first to be going Steel City’s way. Steel Hurtin’ won lead jammer on the first six jams of the bout and jumped out to a 20-0 lead, but an aggressive style of play led to 41 penalties for Steel City. Ohio took advantage, scoring 189 of their 216 points with Steel City jammers sitting on the penalty bench, over 100 points more than Steel City managed on their power jams. It wasn’t just offensive power that won the game; the penalty kill was just as destructive. The best example of Ohio’s domination on penalty kills happened with 22 minutes left in the first half when The Smacktivist was sent to the box and Ohio’s defense, led by Lora “Outa My” Wayman and Amy Spears, kept Steel City’s superstar jammer ‘Snot Rocket Science from breaking out the pack for the full thirty second penalty time. ‘Snot was sent to the box

Gang Green Collapses Pittsburgh’s Steel Beamers 174-127

After watching the Ohio Roller Girls charter team take down the Steel Hurtin’ 216-191, Gang Green did everything they could to make sure their bout against Pittsburgh’s reserve squad wouldn’t be as close.  It’s always a tough match when Steel City and Ohio meet, and Gang Green quickly found themselves in a battle that made the several hundred spectators in attendance cheer for the efforts put forth by everyone involved.  The first ten jams of the contest went back and forth between Gang Green and the Steel Beamers.  Jams lasted an average of one minute, and just ten minutes into the bout, the two reserve squads exchanged leads a total of five times.  With 19:15 remaining in the first period, Gang Green clung to a slim 24-17 lead.    On the period’s eleventh jam, Gang Green’s Sarah Bruce rattled off a 20-0 power jam with Shrinking Violet in the penalty box for a high block.  Two jams later, it was Val Holla knocking Hot Lips Bruise’ihan out of bounds, allowing HellionBOI the opportunity to get lead and secure a 2-0 jam.  Hellion’s jam took Gang Green’s lead to 54-18.  Clean play by both squads over the next ten jams didn’t yield

(28) STEEL CITY TO VISIT COLUMBUS FOR SEASON FINALE

This weekend, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will skate in their final home bout this season as they welcome in Pittsburgh’s (28) Steel City Roller Derby.  A long-standing rivalry continues as these teams will meet for the fifth time, and the third time in the last year and a half.  Ohio and Steel City first met back in 2007 when Ohio was victorious 134-131, but Steel City got their revenge two years later, 125-98.  Then, a four year hiatus, mainly due to regional affiliation, kept these two teams apart.  The battle was renewed last season as a scheduled home-and-home series saw these squads face each other in each of their home venues.  In April 2013, Ohio hosted Steel City and got off to a quick 102-9 start.  An amazing comeback by the Steel Hurtin in the second period cut the deficit to only 23 points, but Ohio held strong to secure a 246-162 victory.  Then in August, Ohio traveled to Pittsburgh and won a nail-biter 184-179.  Historically, Ohio and Steel City have always played each other well, and with an average margin of victory only being 39 points, this next matchup is bound to follow in its footsteps.
