ATLANTA’S RUMBLE Bs STING GANG GREEN 277-74

After watching the Ohio Roller Girls’ charter team have a 24 consecutive home winning streak snapped by the Atlanta Rollergirls in the previous bout, Gang Green was hoping for a little revenge for their sisters in skate as they took the track against Atlanta’s reserve squad, the Rumble Bs.  Unfortunately, it was Atlanta’s two squads that left the Lausche Building with a pair of victories over Mother’s Day weekend.    As much as the skaters for Gang Green never gave up, and the home crowd applauded their efforts, the Rumble Bs simply dominated the contest from the first to final whistle.  Of the first half’s twenty-one jams, Atlanta’s reserve squad secured lead jammer nineteen times to Gang Green’s two.  Atlanta went with a five jammer rotation which kept their skaters fresh, while Gang Green primarily jammed Hop Devil, Ally McSqueal, and Blitz Lemon.  Although they played clean derby in the first half, the Gang Green jammers simply had too much working against them as the Rumble Bs repeatedly recycled on defense and formed nearly impenetrable walls over the duration of the contest.    Although they were outscored 129-43 in the first half, the Gang Green defense did show some moxie as they

(20) Ohio Hosts (10) Atlanta this Saturday for Mother’s Day Melee

This Mother’s Day weekend, roller derby fans in Columbus will be treated to an exciting bout featuring two squads that made it to last season’s WFTDA World Championship tournament.  Both the (20) Ohio Roller Girls and the (10) Atlanta Rollergirls occupied two of the twelve spots at Champs, having played their way through stiff competition at separate Division 1 Playoff locations.  Both squads had such a good showing at Champs that they were both victorious in their opening round bouts with Ohio defeating Rat City (Seattle), and Atlanta defeating London (UK).   The Ohio Roller Girls are still feeling the sting of a close loss at Naptown (Indianapolis) last weekend where they fell to the Tornado Sirens 163-140.  The defeat added a second tally in the loss column for the OHRG and pushed their overall 2014 record to 4-2.  The Naptown bout also kick-started a grueling six week endurance test in which the Ohio Roller Girls will play a total of seven bouts, five of which will be against teams ranked above them.  Their bout against Atlanta will be their toughest to date this season, with their schedule only getting harder from here on out.  Whereas OHRG has been playing consistently since

OHIO FALLS JUST SHORT IN INDY, 140-163

At the end of Saturday's bout in Indianapolis, the announcer proclaimed it “the most exciting bout” the Naptown Tornado Sirens had all year. Unfortunately, it was not as exciting as the Ohio Roller Girls (4-2) would have liked. Penalties were nearly Ohio's salvation: Naptown (5-1) accrued thirty-one of them, against just eighteen for Ohio. But like the proverbial double-edged sword, it was penalties at key moments in the bout that led to Ohio's doom. Naptown stormed out of the gates, running up a 39-8 tally in the first ten jams. Ohio stopped the bleeding behind power jams by Kitty Liquorbottom and The Smacktivist, then climbed back into the game by hard-fought increments. An eighteen-point, five-on-two power jam by Zee "Loraine Acid" Gulertekin brought Ohio within eleven points with just under two minutes left in the first half, but Siren jammer Maiden America finished off the half two jams later with a nine-point run, and Naptown led 83-67 at the half. Ohio came off the line breathing fire in the second half. #20 OHIO TRAVELS TO #11 NAPTOWN IN I-70 BATTLE

Playing in their sixth bout of the season, the #20 Ohio Roller Girls will travel west along I-70 this weekend as they take on traditional powerhouse #11 Naptown Roller Girls (Indianapolis).  Ohio will enter the contest with a 4-1 record under their collective belt as they have posted victories against Nashville (194-128), Bleeding Heartland (291-93), Toronto (185-172), and Tri-City (225-142).  Their lone defeat came at Quad City Chaos when they fell to Montreal. The Naptown Tornado Sirens have had an eerily similar season thus far in 2014.  The Tornado Sirens are also 4-1 in sanctioned play with victories over Bleeding Heartland (295-148), Cincinnati (238-116), New Hampshire (182-140), and Tri-City (325-88).  Their lone defeat was to the Madison Dairyland Dolls in a hangover bout, 142-162.  Ohio and Naptown appear to be similar when taking a look at their shared opponents so far this season.  Naptown defeated Bleeding Heartland by 147 points, whereas Ohio defeated Bleeding Heartland by 198 points.  On the other hand, Ohio only defeated Tri-City by 83, whereas Naptown was victorious over the team from Kitchener Ontario by 237.  Simply by looking at how they’ve progressed over their first five bouts, it’s easy to see that Naptown is a team

OHIO VICTORIOUS OVER TRI-CITY THUNDER, 225-142

This past Saturday was the third time that the Ohio Roller Girls have matched up against Tri-City Roller Derby’s Tri-City Thunder from Kitchener, Ontario. OHRG recognized early on that they had some tough opponents in players like Tri-City veterans Wylde Leigh Cyote and Fox Smoulder. As evidenced by their strong 2013 playoffs performance, Tri-City had been working hard since the two teams last saw each other, but unfortunately for the Canadian team, Ohio had been doing the same. Right out of the gate, Ohio took the lead with The Smacktivist scoring the first two points of the game in the first jam. Ohio would continue to add a few points here and there for the majority of the first half. Ohio jammers found themselves trying to catch up to fast-moving packs with the Tri-City jammers hot on their tail.  OHRG blockers weren’t having it any easier, finding themselves fighting some tough hits and strong walls courtesy of players like Fraxxure and Aggrosaurus. Ohio managed to maintain a steady lead despite growing penalty trouble, although the persistent pack disadvantage eventually caught up to them. (22) OHIO WELCOMES (41) TRI-CITY ROLLER DERBY FOR INTERNATIONAL BOUT

  Fresh off their 2-1 performance at Quad City Chaos hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, the Ohio Roller Girls will host their second home bout of the season against, well, more Canadians!  After splitting bouts with the #1 and #2 ranked teams in Canada, Ohio will try their luck against the third best team north of the border, Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener, ON), on Saturday, April 5th, at the Lausche Building.  Historically, the Ohio Roller Girls are 9-1 against international teams, including a 2-0 record against Tri-City.  The two teams last met in May 2012 when Ohio was victorious 159-113.  Prior to that, Ohio also took the win in June 2011, 131-76.    The Ohio Roller Girls will have the advantage coming into this weekend’s bout, having already played four bouts in the 2014 season.  They were victorious in the season opener against Nashville 194-128, and secured two additional victories at Quad City Chaos against Bleeding Heartland (Bloomington, IN) 291-93, and Toronto 185-172.  Their lone loss this season was to the Montreal New Skids on the Block 385-158.  Ohio will feature The Smacktivist and Kitty Liquorbottom on the jammer line, as both played tremendously well at Quad City Chaos.  For their efforts

OHRG ALL STARS TAKE HOME WINS, LOSS AT QUAD CITY CHAOS

Ohio vs. New Skids on the Block (Montreal, QC) Ohio first met Montreal in 2009 and then again in 2013 during playoffs. Both of those meetings landed Ohio with wins over the New Skids on the Block despite Montreal’s higher ranking.  Going into Quad City Chaos this weekend, it looked as though it could go either way based on the history.  One thing was certain, of course: neither team was going to go down without a fight. It didn’t look good from the start for OHRG, though.  With jammer The Smacktivist earning a track cut penalty in the first jam, Montreal was able to start off strong. In that first power jam Mel-E-Juana scored 19 points and Montreal barely looked back.  Penalty trouble continued for OHRG throughout the first half and into the second.  Ohio skaters spent a total of 38 penalty minutes to Montreal’s 26 throughout the two periods. With the score at the half 169-96 in favor of Montreal, Ohio came back with a few power jams to start the second half off a bit stronger. They couldn’t seem to make up the point difference with their continued penalty trouble and the game ended 385-158.  The good news for Ohio is

OHIO CROSSES THE BORDER FOR QUAD CITY CHAOS

The #22 Ohio Roller Girls will invade Canada for the second straight year this weekend as they participate in Quad City Chaos, hosted by  Toronto Roller Derby.  Ohio will compete in three bouts over two days against #17 Montreal, #29 Toronto, and #42 Bleeding Heartland.  Last year’s Quad City Chaos was the first ever fully WFTDA sanctioned event held in Canada, with three of this year’s teams making return trips for the event.  As previously mentioned, this will be Ohio’s second trip to the event, following an impressive 3-0 record at last season’s QCC with wins over Toronto, Rideau Valley, and Queen City.  This will be the fifth consecutive year for Toronto serving as host league, where they have amassed an 8-4 record at the event.  Montreal will be making their third appearance at Quad City Chaos.  After going 6-0 at the event in 2010 and 2011, the New Skids on the Block took a couple of years off before coming back for bouts against Ohio, Bleeding Heartland, and Toronto.  They will be the highest ranked team competing in Toronto this weekend.  This will be Bleeding Heartland’s first trip to Quad City Chaos.     #22 Ohio vs #17 Montreal Looking at the schedule

(24) Ohio Defeats (32) Syndicate

The (24) Ohio Roller Girls played a tune-up bout against the (32) Chicago Outfit Syndicate this past weekend before they head out for a difficult road bout against Steel City on August 10th.  Historically, OHRG is 1-2 against the Syndicate, first suffering a loss at Chicago in 2010 (172-34), then again at the 2011 BrewHaHa tournament (68-147) before redeeming themselves at home in 2012 (164-97).  This past weekend’s 273-106 drubbing over the Chicago Outfit took Ohio’s record to 13-5 this season with two bouts to go before they head to Ft. Wayne (IN) for the WFTDA Division I playoffs in September.  The Chicago Outfit will also compete in Division I post-season play, but a little further west in Salem (OR). The Ohio Roller Girls took the lead on the first jam and never looked back, thanks to clock-eating power jams and a staunch, powerful defense.  Ohio’s Phoenix Bunz scored the first four points of the bout before Lola Blow cut the OHRG lead in half 2-4 on the next jam.  Three double-digit jams over the next five outings saw the Ohio lead skyrocket quickly to 73-15 after only nine minutes.  During that time, Ohio received three power jams and saw The

Ohio Dominates Quad City Chaos in Toronto

The Ohio Roller Girls traveled to Toronto last weekend to take part in the Quad City Chaos tournament. A round-robin event, Ohio faced Toronto, Rideau Valley, and Queen City. Ohio Edges Out Toronto's CN Power The OHRG All Stars kicked the weekend off with a win over CN Power. Ohio got off to a strong start, with Phoenix Bunz and the Smacktivist racking up 4 points each. Solid pack work from Ohio's Ava Tarr, Bratislava Bruiser, Loraine Acid, and Pippi RipYourStockings held CNP jammers Kookie Doe and Motorhead Molly (a former Tri-City skater) back in the first two jams. Not to be outdone, Bambi and Motorhead Molly each respectively sped through the pack to quickly answer for CN Power, shifting the score to 12-8.  Although Kookie Doe was sent to the penalty box on a track cut the following jam, Ohio's Loraine Acid had trouble with Bruiseberry Pie and Nasher the Smasher, who forced their own track cut, releasing Kookie Doe from the box. Kookie Doe successfully called off the jam despite not being lead jammer and was sent back to the box for an illegal procedure penalty. Ohio smartly sent Phoenix Bunz to the line, who powered through the CNP pack for 26
