GANG GREEN TAKEN DOWN BY NAPTOWN WARNING BELLES, 88-185

Ohio’s Gang Green started and ended strong against Indianapolis’s Naptown Warning Belles on Saturday. It was the middle part of the bout that caused them trouble. Gang Green jammer Hop Devil, who jammed thirteen times and won three leads (23%), breezed through the pack to gain the lead on the first jam. Nicold N Deadly (thirteen jams, five leads (38%)) overcame a low block on the second jam to gain a come-from-behind lead in the second, thanks to a stellar effort by her blockers to keep Belle jammer The Bitter End in the pack. TactiGal (six jams, three leads (50%)) followed with yet another lead on the third jam, and Hop Devil finished Ohio’s brief period of dominance by fighting off a forearm penalty to gain the lead in the fourth jam. I say “brief period” because the four jams combined netted a total of four points for Gang Green, and they were the last points Ohio would get for another six jams. #20 OHIO TRAVELS TO #11 NAPTOWN IN I-70 BATTLE

Playing in their sixth bout of the season, the #20 Ohio Roller Girls will travel west along I-70 this weekend as they take on traditional powerhouse #11 Naptown Roller Girls (Indianapolis).  Ohio will enter the contest with a 4-1 record under their collective belt as they have posted victories against Nashville (194-128), Bleeding Heartland (291-93), Toronto (185-172), and Tri-City (225-142).  Their lone defeat came at Quad City Chaos when they fell to Montreal. The Naptown Tornado Sirens have had an eerily similar season thus far in 2014.  The Tornado Sirens are also 4-1 in sanctioned play with victories over Bleeding Heartland (295-148), Cincinnati (238-116), New Hampshire (182-140), and Tri-City (325-88).  Their lone defeat was to the Madison Dairyland Dolls in a hangover bout, 142-162.  Ohio and Naptown appear to be similar when taking a look at their shared opponents so far this season.  Naptown defeated Bleeding Heartland by 147 points, whereas Ohio defeated Bleeding Heartland by 198 points.  On the other hand, Ohio only defeated Tri-City by 83, whereas Naptown was victorious over the team from Kitchener Ontario by 237.  Simply by looking at how they’ve progressed over their first five bouts, it’s easy to see that Naptown is a team

OHIO VICTORIOUS OVER TRI-CITY THUNDER, 225-142

This past Saturday was the third time that the Ohio Roller Girls have matched up against Tri-City Roller Derby’s Tri-City Thunder from Kitchener, Ontario. OHRG recognized early on that they had some tough opponents in players like Tri-City veterans Wylde Leigh Cyote and Fox Smoulder. As evidenced by their strong 2013 playoffs performance, Tri-City had been working hard since the two teams last saw each other, but unfortunately for the Canadian team, Ohio had been doing the same. Right out of the gate, Ohio took the lead with The Smacktivist scoring the first two points of the game in the first jam. Ohio would continue to add a few points here and there for the majority of the first half. Ohio jammers found themselves trying to catch up to fast-moving packs with the Tri-City jammers hot on their tail.  OHRG blockers weren’t having it any easier, finding themselves fighting some tough hits and strong walls courtesy of players like Fraxxure and Aggrosaurus. Ohio managed to maintain a steady lead despite growing penalty trouble, although the persistent pack disadvantage eventually caught up to them. GANG GREEN TAKES DOWN PLAN B (Kitchener, Ontario) 247-94

To Plan B, or not to Plan B… that was the question going into Saturday’s reserve squad battle between Ohio’s Gang Green and Tri-City’s Plan B.  The answer was simple as Gang Green brought strength, depth, and an overall dominant performance to the track as they soundly defeated the visitors 247-94.  Gang Green started slowly as Plan B took an early 8-7 lead going into the fourth jam.  A multiplayer block to Plan B’s Commander Will Wrecker allowed Blitz Lemon to score a 17-0 jam, thus creating the bout’s first (and only) lead change.  Lemon’s power jam was followed by a 14-0 jam by Hop Devil which took Gang Green’s lead to 38-8 with 22:30 remaining in the first period. A string of eight straight lead jammers for Gang Green allowed the home squad to go on an 86-4 run over Tri-City and extend their lead to 93-12.  The final jam of that run saw Gang Green’s pack force a track cut to Plan B’s Slaughterhouse Streeter, which put Blitz Lemon on yet another power jam.  Lemon took full advantage of a strong pack that was able to hold Streeter on her initial pass after being released from the box and

(22) OHIO WELCOMES (41) TRI-CITY ROLLER DERBY FOR INTERNATIONAL BOUT

  Fresh off their 2-1 performance at Quad City Chaos hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, the Ohio Roller Girls will host their second home bout of the season against, well, more Canadians!  After splitting bouts with the #1 and #2 ranked teams in Canada, Ohio will try their luck against the third best team north of the border, Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener, ON), on Saturday, April 5th, at the Lausche Building.  Historically, the Ohio Roller Girls are 9-1 against international teams, including a 2-0 record against Tri-City.  The two teams last met in May 2012 when Ohio was victorious 159-113.  Prior to that, Ohio also took the win in June 2011, 131-76.    The Ohio Roller Girls will have the advantage coming into this weekend’s bout, having already played four bouts in the 2014 season.  They were victorious in the season opener against Nashville 194-128, and secured two additional victories at Quad City Chaos against Bleeding Heartland (Bloomington, IN) 291-93, and Toronto 185-172.  Their lone loss this season was to the Montreal New Skids on the Block 385-158.  Ohio will feature The Smacktivist and Kitty Liquorbottom on the jammer line, as both played tremendously well at Quad City Chaos.  For their efforts

OHRG ALL STARS TAKE HOME WINS, LOSS AT QUAD CITY CHAOS

Ohio vs. New Skids on the Block (Montreal, QC) Ohio first met Montreal in 2009 and then again in 2013 during playoffs. Both of those meetings landed Ohio with wins over the New Skids on the Block despite Montreal’s higher ranking.  Going into Quad City Chaos this weekend, it looked as though it could go either way based on the history.  One thing was certain, of course: neither team was going to go down without a fight. It didn’t look good from the start for OHRG, though.  With jammer The Smacktivist earning a track cut penalty in the first jam, Montreal was able to start off strong. In that first power jam Mel-E-Juana scored 19 points and Montreal barely looked back.  Penalty trouble continued for OHRG throughout the first half and into the second.  Ohio skaters spent a total of 38 penalty minutes to Montreal’s 26 throughout the two periods. With the score at the half 169-96 in favor of Montreal, Ohio came back with a few power jams to start the second half off a bit stronger. They couldn’t seem to make up the point difference with their continued penalty trouble and the game ended 385-158.  The good news for Ohio is

GANG GREEN FALLS TO TORONTO’S BAY STREET BRUISERS

In the much anticipated rubber match between Ohio’s Gang Green and Toronto’s Bay Street Bruisers, it was the home squad BSB who took the victory in the third matchup played at Quad City Chaos.  Gang Green was victorious 163-107 two years ago, but the Bay Street Bruisers were able to even the series at the 2013 Quad City Chaos tournament 207-112.  In what has become a budding rivalry, Gang Green fell in the third encounter over the weekend 302-94.    Gang Green traveled with a new lineup to Quad City Chaos that featured three skaters who were not only making their international debut, but their Gang Green debuts as well.  Rookies Tasha Cookies, Lita Fuse, and Hope Dela Vega all made the trip to Canada for their first real derby action with Ohio and all three played extremely well.  The Bay Street Bruisers got out to a quick start, holding Gang Green scoreless over the first three jams 13-0.  Jammer penalties on both sides in the fourth jam boosted the BSB lead to 23-9. OHIO CROSSES THE BORDER FOR QUAD CITY CHAOS

The #22 Ohio Roller Girls will invade Canada for the second straight year this weekend as they participate in Quad City Chaos, hosted by  Toronto Roller Derby.  Ohio will compete in three bouts over two days against #17 Montreal, #29 Toronto, and #42 Bleeding Heartland.  Last year’s Quad City Chaos was the first ever fully WFTDA sanctioned event held in Canada, with three of this year’s teams making return trips for the event.  As previously mentioned, this will be Ohio’s second trip to the event, following an impressive 3-0 record at last season’s QCC with wins over Toronto, Rideau Valley, and Queen City.  This will be the fifth consecutive year for Toronto serving as host league, where they have amassed an 8-4 record at the event.  Montreal will be making their third appearance at Quad City Chaos.  After going 6-0 at the event in 2010 and 2011, the New Skids on the Block took a couple of years off before coming back for bouts against Ohio, Bleeding Heartland, and Toronto.  They will be the highest ranked team competing in Toronto this weekend.  This will be Bleeding Heartland’s first trip to Quad City Chaos.     #22 Ohio vs #17 Montreal Looking at the schedule

OHIO BRINGS HOME FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AGAINST NASHVILLE, 194-128

It's been over six months since Columbus got to see the Ohio Roller Girls play a home bout. August was the last time OHRG graced the Ohio Expo Center before tournament season and, if you missed it, what a tournament season it was! OHRG won two out of three playoffs games, which earned them their very first trip to Championships in November. After a great 2013 and a lot of hard work in the off-season, OHRG was ready to hit their hometown track on March 8th to start the 2014 season off right. For the season opener, OHRG welcomed the Nashville Rollergirls Music City All Stars. The two teams last played against each other in 2010, with Ohio falling to Nashville. Four years later, Ohio wasn’t going down so easily. Ohio started out the first half with a strong mix of veterans jamming, including Kitty Liquorbottom,  The Smacktivist, and Bratislava Bruiser. They gained immediate advantage over Nashville, including the first power jam of the game going to Lora “Outa My” Wayman, but they didn’t stay ahead for long.  After five lead changes, Nashville jammers, including Ann T. Last Clinic of 2013!

Don't miss out on our last clinic of the year: Wednesday, December 4, 2013 - United Skates of America, 3362 Refugee Road, Columbus OH, 43232 from 8:30-11 pm. Wannabe Clinics are two hour clinics, led by dedicated Ohio Roller Girls, that teach basic derby skating skills. We cover all the basic skills, but no contact drills. Clinics are a great workout and an awesome way to learn more about roller derby! Clinics are only $10! (Cash only, please.) Contact recruiting@ohiorollergirls.com to officially sign up and hold your spot in the clinics. While it helps to have some basic skating skills, it is not required. All attendees must be at least 19 years old and female. Rental skates are available at no extra charge, but if you have your own gear, please bring it. You'll need a helmet (for wannabe clinics, bicycle helmets are acceptable), a mouth guard, elbow pads, wrist guards, and thick, hard-shell knee pads.
