(47) Ohio to Host Northern Neighbors (37) Ann Arbor

With their home season well underway following a decisive victory over North Star Roller Derby in March, Ohio Roller Derby gears up for game two against Ann Arbor Roller Derby (Ann Arbor, MI) in what has become a yearly matchup. The teams have met twice now, each taking away a win: Ohio opened their 2016 home season with a 244-139 win against the Brawlstars, and Ann Arbor pulled off a 193-124 victory when hosting the Columbus squad last June. Ann Arbor went 4-6 in regular season play in 2017 before making their second postseason appearance and finishing out the year with two losses at the 2017 WFTDA Division 1 Playoff in Seattle. The Brawlstars kicked off their 2018 season with a trip to Buffalo, NY, where they lost an unsanctioned game to Queen City Roller Girls on March 24th. In addition to the trip to Ohio this weekend, they will also travel to South Carolina at the end of April for the fourth annual Southern Discomfort invitational, hosted by Columbia Roller Derby, and to the inaugural Udder Chaos tournament hosted by Mad Rollin’ Dolls (Madison WI) in May. OHIO ROLLER DERBY BLASTS INTO THIRTEENTH SEASON

After a lengthy off-season spent rebuilding the charter roster and overhauling strategies, Ohio Roller Derby kicked off their 2018 competitive season with a packed home doubleheader against North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN). (47) OHIO ALL STARS ROCKET PAST (62) NORTH STAR SUPERNOVAS, 223-111 The sheer number of CT skaters who stepped down since the end of the 2017 competitive season - seven total, some temporarily, some permanently - led to preseason speculation about the stability of the Ohio roster going into a rebuilding year. Never a team to back down from a challenge, the All Stars took the departure of four of their top-scoring jammers in stride, and on March 17th showed Columbus that not only is their jammer pool as deep as ever, but that they’re already well on their way to a strong, cohesive squad. Ohio opted for an aggressive start, nabbing lead jammer status in each of the first three jams. In jam 4, Bigg Rigg evaded a rear North Star defense to escape the pack first; with offensive assistance from Paige Bleed and Kelsey Khaos on scoring passes, she easily doubled Ohio’s score for a 23-3 lead while the North Star pivot-turned-jammer left the track on a forearm

(47) Ohio Roller Derby Launches Season Against (62) North Star Roller Derby

Ohio Roller Derby will open their thirteenth season on Saturday, March 17th, against North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN) here in Columbus at the Ohio Expo Center. The two teams have met only twice before, most recently in 2012, when Ohio pulled off a 149-101 road victory at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Though six years have passed, a few OHRD veterans from that roster remain, including Amy Spears, Bigg Rigg, Kitty Liquorbottom, Paige Bleed, and Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin. The All Stars return to their home track at the Ohio Expo Center after a long hiatus from competitive play following their appearance at the 2017 WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Pittsburgh, PA, last August. Ohio went 1-2 at the tournament: after a difficult first game defeat by frequent opponent No Coast Derby Girls (Lincoln, NE), they pulled out a decisive victory over Treasure Valley Roller Derby (Boise, ID) and lost by only a handful of points to European powerhouse Bear City Roller Derby (Berlin, Germany). The Motor City VS. The Capital City

This Saturday, your #43 Ohio Roller Derby take on #28 Detroit Roller Derby in the final home bout of the season. This bout will not only continue the long-standing rivalry between the two squads, but also acts as a tribute to the rebirth of roller derby, as both Ohio and Detroit were two of the original 30 teams in the WFTDA. For the first time since 2013, Ohio has slid out of Division 1 and will play at the WFTDA Division II Playoffs in Pittsburgh from August 18-20th. Looking for momentum headed into the DII Playoffs, Ohio will continue to rely on a deeper jammer rotation than in seasons past with Gorges Curves and Pain Train leading the charge. Skaters Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, Bigg Rigg, Val Holla, TactiGal, and BrussKnuckles continue to compete to become that third jammer in Ohio’s rotation, all of whom have found success donning the star at different times during the season. Blockers Wayman, Amy Spears, Kelsey Khaos, Chainsaw, Slammerhead, Betty T. KayO, Rigg, and Acid will have their hands full with Detroit’s speedy and powerful jammers. DUAL WINS FOR OHIO AGAINST BRANDYWINE

Rolling with renewed momentum following their trip to the Skate to Thrill invitational, Ohio Roller Derby returned to the Ohio Expo Center to spar with Brandywine Roller Derby, a first-time matchup for the two leagues. (35) OHIO SUBDUES (48) BRANDYWINE, 248-108 With 4 sanctioned games already under their skates this year, Ohio has begun to coalesce and fine tune their defense, giving them the leg up on the Brandywine Belligerents, who had not played a game since the 2016 International WFTDA Division 2 championship game last November. A short Brandywine roster also benefited Ohio, as mounting penalties and foul outs became an additional obstacle late in the second half. The Belligerents posted the first 4 points of the game, but Val Holla lit up the pack for 18 points in the second jam, giving Ohio a lead that they would never relinquish. Three jams later, Slammerhead forced Lurz Lemon into a track cut penalty, gifting Ohio the first power jam opportunity of the game and a 9-point gain; Brandywine found their own power jam moments later, grinding out 14 points after Ohio lost lead status on a low block call. 2017 OHRD Tryouts

Do you want to skate with one of the top teams in the world? Get ready for our annual open tryouts on November 1st & 3rd from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. Tryouts are open to women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming individuals 18 & over.* You should plan on both nights, though we may do a cut before the second night.(*see WTFDA's statement here: https://wftda.com/wftda-gender-statement) If you have your own skates and gear (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet), please bring them. If you don’t, skates will be available, as will pads to borrow. Mouth guards will be available to purchase for $2 (cash only). Interviews will also be scheduled, and may be on an addtional date. We strongly encourage interested skaters to test the waters with our monthly Wannabe Clinics or get involved with our Rec League to prepare. OHIO FINISHES 2016 SEASON WITH 1-2 RUN AT PLAYOFFS

From a strict win-loss pattern perspective, Ohio’s performance at the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Madison, WI looked eerily similar to their trips to D1s in Evansville, IN in 2014 and Dallas, TX in 2015: a tough loss to a higher-seeded team in their first game on Friday, a much more closely contested loss in the consolation bracket on Saturday, and a sound victory in their final game on Sunday. As teams at Playoffs only know for sure who their first opponent will be, Ohio needed to be prepared not only to play Windy City in Game 1, but any of the other eight teams in the tournament over the course of the weekend, from #10 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls to the #1-ranked team in the world, Gotham. Of the 16 skaters playing for Ohio over the course of the weekend, 13 had skated at D1s in previous years, giving the team a veteran advantage with a good dose of fresh blood in both the blocker & jammer rotations.
