THE ROC STARS’ 2016 TOUR INCLUDES COLUMBUS

The old saying goes, “If the music’s too loud, you’re too old.” Well, the Ohio Roller Derby will be looking to make some noise of their own this weekend as they welcome in the Roc Stars of Roc City Roller Derby (Rochester, NY). In the first contest of the evening, the #36 Ohio Roller Derby will be putting a 16 game home win streak on the line as they also play for a spot in the Division 1 Playoffs in September. A good showing from the home team will solidify OHRD in the top 40, rather than dropping them down in to Division 2. If Ohio keeps their #36 rank throughout this month, that would be good enough for a 9-seed in the playoffs, pitting them against an 8-seed in the first round (with the winner moving on to play the 1-seed in the next round). Ohio, currently sporting a 6-1 record in their 2016 campaign, only have the Roc City bout remaining on their schedule before the final Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rankings come out and seed teams for playoffs. DUAL VICTORIES OVER CAROLINA ROLLERGIRLS

For their fourth home game of the season, Ohio Roller Derby hosted the Carolina Rollergirls (Raleigh, NC) for two roof-raising games that both ended in decisive wins for the Columbus league. (37) OHIO ALL STARS CARVE OUT 206-119 VICTORY OVER (65) CAROLINA ALL-STARS After their last match-up resulted in an overwhelming 432-29 victory for Ohio, Carolina seemed eager for a different outcome this time around. Five lead changes and two tie scores in the first half gave Ohio a very narrow lead at halftime, but the home squad methodically widened the point spread during the second period to secure their sixteenth straight home victory and bring their season record to 6-1. Two quick 4-0 jams gave Carolina the initial lead, but Elektra Magneto, Kitty Liquorbottom, Stevie Brown, and Chainsaw held Magically Maulicious on her initial pass for over a lap while Blitz Lemon put up the first 2 points for Ohio in the third jam. Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin posted 5 clean points in jam 6, and a 4-0 jam by Lora “Outa My” Wayman gave Ohio a 13-12 lead after 8 minutes of gameplay. (37) OHIO OFFERS SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY AS (65) CAROLINA VISITS THE 614

This weekend, the Carolina Roller Girls invade Columbus as their All-Stars attempt to snap Ohio’s fifteen game home win streak. It’ll be a tough task for the team from Raleigh, North Carolina, as Ohio Roller Derby has defeated their three home opponents this season (Ann Arbor, Ithaca, and Tri-City) by an average of 162 points. Historically, Ohio holds a 1-1 record against the Carolina All-Stars. They first met back in Raleigh in 2012 where Carolina took a slim victory, 125-110. Ohio was able to get revenge on Carolina the following year in Columbus, when the home squad convincingly won 432-29. Recently, Ohio has been able to jump back into the top 40 after climbing four spaces after the last WFTDA rankings release. Conversely, Carolina also saw a five position climb to #65, as they attempt to land between #40-60 in order to play in the Division 2 Playoffs in August. Carolina is 3-1 in their 2016 campaign, with a three game win streak coming into Columbus. They started their season with a loss to Jet City (217-140), but rolled off three wins over three days at the K-Town Shakedown hosted by the Killamazoo Derby Darlins earlier this month. OHIO SPLITS GAMES AGAINST TRI-CITY

Upholding a near-annual tradition, Ohio Roller Derby hosted Tri-City Roller Derby for the third year running. The All Stars held a 4-0 record over the skaters from Kitchener, Ontario, and were victorious again, improving to a 5-1 season record. In the second game of the night, Gang Green looked to bolster their 2-1 record over TCRD’s Plan B, but ultimately fell short in their first loss of the season. (41) OHIO STORMS PAST (47) TRI-CITY THUNDER, 258-129 From the first whistle of the game, the Ohio All Stars held a firm grip on the lead over the Tri-City Thunder, matching points with or outscoring the Canadian team in 74% of jams. Lora “Outa My” Wayman, The Smacktivist , and Bigg Rigg gave Ohio big boosts with eleven double-digit jams, and clean gameplay on both sides meant full packs, brawny defense, and tough battles for lead jammer status. Tri-City’s defense held The Smacktivist for 35 seconds in the first jam before they got out for a quick 4 points, and with the first penalty of the game assessed to the TCRD jammer in jam 4, they posted 23 unanswered points to give Ohio a 31-5 lead. Tri-City Stamps Their Passports To Visit Ohio

This Saturday, the Ohio Roller Derby hosts Tri-City Roller Derby from Kitchener, Ontario, in a battle as both squads look to make the jump back into Division 1. In WFTDA, teams ranked 1-40 fall into the Division 1 playoff structure at the end of the season, with teams between 41-60 placed in the Division 2 playoffs. Ohio, currently ranked #41 after the most recent WFTDA rankings release, should jump back into the 30s next month as they look to continue their presence in the Division 1 postseason. Tri-City is currently ranked #47 and needs some favorable outcomes over the next few months to work their way back into the top 40. Currently 2-1 in their 2016 campaign, the Tri-City Thunder opened the season as a participant at Quad City Chaos, a weekend invitational hosted by Toronto Roller Derby in mid-March. At Quad City Chaos, the Thunder were victorious over Roller Derby Quebec 193-139, and against the Toronto All Stars 207-158. The Thunder’s lone setback at Chaos was against the Queen City Roller Girls, 209-71, a team they’ll have a rematch with in May at the Tri-City-hosted Beaver Fever Invitational. OHIO ALL STARS GO 2-1 AT SKATE TO THRILL

For their first road games of the 2016 season, (41) Ohio Roller Derby packed in 3 tough games in just under 30 hours at the second annual Skate to Thrill tournament. The weekend kicked off with a tough loss to (25) No Coast Derby Girls on Saturday morning, followed by a single-point, last-second win over (44) Houston Roller Derby that afternoon and a landslide victory against (42) Chicago Outfit Roller Derby on Sunday. While missing a few skaters from their usual roster, Ohio was certainly not lacking in tenacity in any of the three games. SWAMPED BY NO COAST, 125-261 Despite the point disparity by the end of the contest, Ohio did not allow No Coast to take the win with any ease. After the first four jams, No Coast held a 20-9 lead, but The Smacktivist put up 27 points in jam 5 for the first lead change of the game; the second came halfway through the first period, as No Coast carved out a narrow 3-point edge, 55-52. The Nebraska squad halted Ohio’s scoring momentum for several jams before a penalty to jammer Anna Cassube gave The Smacktivist time to play a bit of catch up; No Coast still held

OHIO ROLLER DERBY GOES 2-0 OVER ITHACA LEAGUE OF WOMEN ROLLERS

In their first-ever matchup against the Ithaca League of Women Rollers, Ohio Roller Derby posted back-to-back wins, bringing the season record to 2-0 for both the All Stars and Gang Green. (31) OHIO ALL STARS FLATTEN (77) ITHACA SUFFERJETS, 312-59 Riding the momentum from their victorious home season opener two weeks ago, Ohio Roller Derby’s All Stars looked to clinch another win against Ithaca’s SufferJets, and was able to do just that by locking down defense and obtaining 67% of lead jammer statuses for the game. The first two jams would prove to be the closest of the game, as The Smacktivist gave Ohio a quick 4-0 lead that was immediately answered by 3 points from Ithaca jammer Rainbow Might. A skating out of bounds penalty on the Ithaca jammer in jam 3 gave Ohio their first power jam of the game, which Blitz Lemon used to put up 10 uncontested points. OHRD’s defensive core thwarted all scoring attempts by Ithaca for the next 7 minutes of gameplay while The Smacktivist, Lora “Outa My” Wayman, and Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin widened Ohio’s lead by an additional 15 points. OHIO ALL STARS FINISH 6-0 HOME SEASON WITH 216-158 VICTORY OVER NAPTOWN TORNADO SIRENS

The Ohio Roller Girls wrapped up their tenth home season with a sold-out triple header against Naptown Roller Girls (Indianapolis, IN). Throngs of fans for both teams packed the Ohio Building to capacity for a high-energy day of roller derby. Ohio's C-level team, Green Machine, kicked things off with a developmental game against Naptown's Third Alarm, followed by the highly anticipated rematches between the Ohio All Stars & the Naptown Tornado Sirens, and Gang Green & the Naptown Warning Belles. For the second time in less than five months, the Ohio Roller Girls took the track against the Naptown Roller Girls Tornado Sirens, this time on home turf and eager to emerge victorious after their 182-132 loss to the Indianapolis team in April. Naptown took a quick 3-0 lead in the first jam, but The Smacktivist responded by lapping the opposing jammer and giving Ohio their first lead change of the game, 9-3. Four consecutive lead jammer statuses gave Naptown the upper hand, and allowed them to temporarily halt Ohio's scoring. (34) OHIO ROLLER GIRLS DROWN OUT (43) NASHVILLE ROLLERGIRLS, 222-172

Well rested from their brief mid-season hiatus—the first after nearly four months and fifteen games—and keenly focused after last week's announcement of placements for the 2015 International WFTDA Playoffs, the Ohio Roller Girls hit the road to Nashville, ready to face the heat of the Music City All Stars. Each team had previously bested the other on their home tracks, and Ohio was well poised to snag a road win this time around to improve their record to 2-1 over Nashville. Ohio took the lead in the first jam, and held on to it for the next seven. Strong Nashville defense in jam three could not contain The Smacktivist, who pushed through for lead jammer status. Slipping easily back into Ohio defense, Zee Loraine Acid Gulertekin partnered with blockers Ena Flash and Texas Chainsaw Sasskicker to silence Nashville's jammers. A string of four lead jams for Nashville allowed them to take a 50-46 lead in jam nine, but they couldn't hold the high note for long. Kitty Liquorbottom broke their lead jam streak while donning the star panty, and Burnadeath followed up with a fast and intense power jam. OHIO TOURS THE MUSIC CITY FOR CLASH AGAINST NASHVILLE

The Ohio Roller Girls will boot, scoot, and boogie their way southwest this weekend for a tough bout against the Nashville Rollergirls.  The matchup will be the third meeting between these two teams, with both squads each winning once on their home turf.  Nashville took the first ever matchup in Tennessee, 166-43, back in 2010, while Ohio served up some home-cooking last season in Columbus, 194-128.  With final rankings and tournament seedings being released, both teams will have to channel their inner Spinal Tap, dig deep for that little extra, and turn it to “eleven” if they want positive momentum headed into playoffs. The Nashville Rollergirls have fallen from Division 1 into Division 2 this season, but it wasn’t because the team has taken a step back talent-wise.  With a 2015 record of 5-7, Nashville’s Music City All Stars have committed themselves to playing a stronger schedule this year than in season’s past.  Riding a three bout win streak with victories against Columbia (SC), Cincinnati (OH), and Providence (RI), Nashville also has victories over Blue Ridge (NC) and St. Chux (MO).  Their losses came to Boston (MA), Charlottesville (VA), Arch Rival (MO), and Naptown (IN).  Most recently, the Music City All
