OHIO DEBUTS PROMISING START TO FOURTEENTH SEASON

Returning once more to their home track after a long off-season, Ohio Roller Derby welcomed perennial adversaries Toronto Roller Derby to Columbus, playing two action-packed games for a nearly sold-out crowd. (64) OHIO BREAKS (58) TORONTO WIN STREAK, 150-121 Aiming to both maintain a perfect record against Toronto and disrupt their 13-game win streak, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars rolled with multiple lead changes in the first half before tightening defense, committing to a core veteran jammer rotation, and denying points in crucial moments to secure their victory. Both teams spent the first few jams feeling out one another’s defense, swapping a scant handful of points. A penalty on the Toronto jammer allowed Catch Mikachu to make the first bold move for Ohio and pick up 12 points in jam 6; Toronto responded with back-to-back shutout power jams, posting 24 points for the first lead change of the game. Quick offense helped BrussKnuckles to snag lead and a quick 4 points, but momentum ground to a near halt in jam 11 as Bigg Rigg and Monster Muffin each fought immovable walls. The Season Continues for OHRD!

After a whirlwind four months of games both here in Columbus and on the road, Ohio Roller Derby has wrapped up their regular competitive season. Now, the All Stars turn their attention to postseason play after receiving an invitation to the first-ever North America - East WFTDA Continental Cup. Changes to the WFTDA Playoffs model for 2018 set a higher bar for teams hoping to be ranked in Division 1 (top 28 teams worldwide, down from top 40 in 2017) and eliminated Division 2 Playoffs, but assigned all teams to regions based on their location and created three Continental Cups for teams ranked below the new Division 1 cutoff. The European Cup will welcome the top 8 teams from the Europe and Africa regions; the North America - West Cup, the top 12 from the North America - West and Asia Pacific regions; and the North America - East Cup, the top 12 from the South America and North America - East regions. A record number of teams declining invitations to these tournaments - many due to high cost of international travel - allowed for extended invitations to several teams who had narrowly missed the initial cutoffs for Division 1 Playoffs

(59) Ohio Extends Welcome to (75) Garden State

After a narrow 13-point loss to Dub City earlier in June, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars are ready to end their 10-game season on a high note, and will leave it all on the track as they take on first-time opponents Garden State Rollergirls (North Arlington, NJ). Without any overlap in opponents, (59) Ohio and (75) Garden State have managed to find a similar trajectory in 2018 competitive play. Currently 2-5, Garden State kicked things off in March with two losses in South Carolina at the March Badness 2018 invitational: after a loss to Naptown Roller Derby, the Ironbound Maidens bounced back to give Columbia Roller Derby a serious run for their money, ultimately falling short by just 6 points. After a third loss to Charm City in May, Garden State were victorious against Mother State, and have loaded their schedule for June. Undeterred by a loss to Boston at the beginning of the month, the Ironbound Maidens spent last weekend at the annual East Coast Derby Extravaganza (ECDX) invitational outside Philadelphia. Despite misfortune in the form of a jammer injury, they kept the score close against Tri-City Roller Derby in a 141-179 loss, then ran away with a 204-105

(51) Ohio Ready to Duel with (58) Dub City

Returning to Columbus after a challenging tournament weekend in Canada, Ohio Roller Derby will make new friends and renew a long-time rivalry as they welcome teams from Dub City Roller Derby (West Palm Beach, FL) and Steel City Roller Derby (Pittsburgh, PA) for the second-to-last home doubleheader of the 2018 season on Saturday, June 9th. A full member league of the WFTDA since the end of 2014, (58) Dub City had a busy and successful season last year, playing half of their sanctioned games at the Clover Cup and Mayday Mayhem tournaments and going 8-2 overall. While The Resistance have scaled back their travel for 2018, only scheduling four sanctioned games, their opponents are no less challenging. Currently 0-2, their season kicked off in late March with a 122-166 loss to Columbia Roller Derby at the 2018 Franky Panky invitational. Over Memorial Day weekend, Dub City took a home track loss to Sailor City Rollers (Buenos Aires, Argentina), who stopped in Florida on their way to the 2018 Besterns tournament in Colorado. OHIO GAINS EXPERIENCE IN INTERNATIONAL PLAY AT ROYAL BRAWL

While short rosters proved an extra hurdle in Ohio’s path to victory over Memorial Day weekend, both the All Stars and Gang Green challenged themselves and found other successes on the track at the Royal Brawl invitational in Guelph, ON, Canada. Endurance training paid off as skaters played in as many as five games over two days, and utilizing newer talent on both teams allowed for creativity in shifting roles and pack dynamics. SATURDAY: ROYAL CITY AND E-VILLE Gang Green opened the action at the Victoria Road Recreation Centre on Saturday morning against the Royal City Rum Rollers (Guelph, ON, CA). While obtaining lead less often than they would have liked in the first half, Ohio jammers chased down their opponents, forcing short jams and quick call offs. Birch Slap picked up the first lead of the game, but double jammer penalties and a subsequent power start allowed the Royal City B team to quickly open a 32-point lead. Avocado ToeStop, Kegel Scout, and Belle A. Trix clumped up to contain Harley Twin while Just Jane grabbed lead status and the first four points for Gang Green. (51) Ohio Welcomes (42) Charlottesville Derby Dames

Following a decisive road victory against DC Rollergirls, (51) Ohio Roller Derby returns home to the Ohio Expo Center to host (42) Charlottesville Derby Dames (Charlottesville, VA) on Saturday, May 12th, in a first-time meeting of the two teams. Since becoming a full member league in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association in 2012, Charlottesville has been on an upward trajectory. A strong record in regular season play in 2015 led to their first postseason appearance at the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs, and continued success catapulted them to a fourth place finish in Division 2 Playoffs in 2016. In 2017, Charlottesville had a stellar 8-0 season that helped push them back into Division 1 and earn a third consecutive Playoffs appearance, where they suffered two losses to higher-ranked Montreal Roller Derby and Jacksonville Rollergirls. Charlottesville kicked off their 2018 season in February with a 399-159 blowout against DC Rollergirls, and remain undefeated after knocking out Brandywine Roller Derby at the beginning of May. Retaining a majority of their 2017 Playoffs bench, Charlottesville boasts a veteran jammer pool that includes Spank Puncherella, Machete, River Styx Phoenix, and Stonewallup. (47) Ohio Seeks New Adventure Against (91) West Virginia

Despite the lingering hold of winter on Columbus, Ohio Roller Derby extends a warm welcome to West Virginia Roller Derby (Beckley, WV) and South Bend Roller Girls (South Bend, IN) as they return to the Ohio Expo Center on Saturday, April 21. West Virginia, a state of smaller and in many cases more geographically isolated roller derby teams, made the bold decision to combine efforts across leagues with the hope of climbing the WFTDA rankings into Division 1. In a July 2017 statement, Beckley Area Derby Dames announced that the newly-formed West Virginia Roller Derby would take over their spot in WFTDA rankings, pooling the top talent in the state. Making a statement in their first game under the new name and charter, the West Virginia All Stars traveled to Tennessee in August and flattened the Nashville Rollergirls, 251-83. The inaugural battle with Ohio is the fourth of West Virginia’s five scheduled games for 2018. (47) Ohio to Host Northern Neighbors (37) Ann Arbor

With their home season well underway following a decisive victory over North Star Roller Derby in March, Ohio Roller Derby gears up for game two against Ann Arbor Roller Derby (Ann Arbor, MI) in what has become a yearly matchup. The teams have met twice now, each taking away a win: Ohio opened their 2016 home season with a 244-139 win against the Brawlstars, and Ann Arbor pulled off a 193-124 victory when hosting the Columbus squad last June. Ann Arbor went 4-6 in regular season play in 2017 before making their second postseason appearance and finishing out the year with two losses at the 2017 WFTDA Division 1 Playoff in Seattle. The Brawlstars kicked off their 2018 season with a trip to Buffalo, NY, where they lost an unsanctioned game to Queen City Roller Girls on March 24th. In addition to the trip to Ohio this weekend, they will also travel to South Carolina at the end of April for the fourth annual Southern Discomfort invitational, hosted by Columbia Roller Derby, and to the inaugural Udder Chaos tournament hosted by Mad Rollin’ Dolls (Madison WI) in May. OHIO FINISHES 2016 SEASON WITH 1-2 RUN AT PLAYOFFS

From a strict win-loss pattern perspective, Ohio’s performance at the 2016 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in Madison, WI looked eerily similar to their trips to D1s in Evansville, IN in 2014 and Dallas, TX in 2015: a tough loss to a higher-seeded team in their first game on Friday, a much more closely contested loss in the consolation bracket on Saturday, and a sound victory in their final game on Sunday. As teams at Playoffs only know for sure who their first opponent will be, Ohio needed to be prepared not only to play Windy City in Game 1, but any of the other eight teams in the tournament over the course of the weekend, from #10 seed Mad Rollin’ Dolls to the #1-ranked team in the world, Gotham. Of the 16 skaters playing for Ohio over the course of the weekend, 13 had skated at D1s in previous years, giving the team a veteran advantage with a good dose of fresh blood in both the blocker & jammer rotations. OHIO ALL STARS GO 2-1 AT SKATE TO THRILL

For their first road games of the 2016 season, (41) Ohio Roller Derby packed in 3 tough games in just under 30 hours at the second annual Skate to Thrill tournament. The weekend kicked off with a tough loss to (25) No Coast Derby Girls on Saturday morning, followed by a single-point, last-second win over (44) Houston Roller Derby that afternoon and a landslide victory against (42) Chicago Outfit Roller Derby on Sunday. While missing a few skaters from their usual roster, Ohio was certainly not lacking in tenacity in any of the three games. SWAMPED BY NO COAST, 125-261 Despite the point disparity by the end of the contest, Ohio did not allow No Coast to take the win with any ease. After the first four jams, No Coast held a 20-9 lead, but The Smacktivist put up 27 points in jam 5 for the first lead change of the game; the second came halfway through the first period, as No Coast carved out a narrow 3-point edge, 55-52.
