(22) Ohio Squares Off Against (14) Charm City

With the tenth season of the Ohio Roller Girls currently underway, the Columbus-based skaters have hit the track running to celebrate a decade of derby in central Ohio.  With most teams in the WFTDA playing just at or under ten bouts per season, the Ohio Roller Girls will play over twenty games this year as they continue to play anyone, anytime, anywhere.  Their 2015 season starts with ten bouts over nine weeks with trips to Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Florida on their early season docket. The OHRG are currently 2-1 this season with a home opener victory over Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario) 257-122, and on the road in Michigan to the Killamazoo Derby Darlins 282-118.  Ohio suffered their first loss last Sunday during a hangover bout with the Detroit Derby Girls, 90-233.  The Ohio Roller Girls will look to stay above .500 as they welcome traditional WFTDA powerhouse Charm City (Baltimore) this weekend for their second home bout of the season. Long-time fans of OHRG will continue to recognize familiar names and faces like Amy Spears, Bigg Rigg, Kitty Liquorbottom, The Smacktivist, and Lora Outa My Wayman as these skaters are among the many veterans still on the team. DIVISION 1 PLAYOFFS: FOR OHIO, THE TIME IS NOW!

(20) OHIO TO FACE (14) JACKSONVILLE AT D1 PLAYOFFS For the third consecutive year, the Ohio Roller Girls will enter the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs as a lower seed than their opponents.  Two years ago, Ohio was a #5 seed before upsetting #4 Arch Rival.  Last season, #6 Ohio again upset #3 Arch in the opening round before taking down #2 Montreal in the semifinals, thus earning Ohio their first ever trip to Championships.  This year, #5 Ohio again looks to play spoiler for the higher seed as they are scheduled to play the #4 Jacksonville Roller Girls’ New Jax City Rollers. Any talk about Ohio being in a rebuilding year this season has been squashed by this 2014 squad.  At this time last year, Ohio entered playoffs at #24 in the world.  This season, Ohio enters playoffs four ranking positions higher at #20.  That being said, Jacksonville will be one of Ohio’s biggest tests this season, as the winner will still face an uphill battle in order to qualify for Championships.  The top three finishers earn a trip to Champs, and with world ranked #3 London Rollergirls, #6 Texas Rollergirls, and the #11 Windy City Rollers also in Ohio’s bracket, the

(28) STEEL CITY TO VISIT COLUMBUS FOR SEASON FINALE

This weekend, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will skate in their final home bout this season as they welcome in Pittsburgh’s (28) Steel City Roller Derby.  A long-standing rivalry continues as these teams will meet for the fifth time, and the third time in the last year and a half.  Ohio and Steel City first met back in 2007 when Ohio was victorious 134-131, but Steel City got their revenge two years later, 125-98.  Then, a four year hiatus, mainly due to regional affiliation, kept these two teams apart.  The battle was renewed last season as a scheduled home-and-home series saw these squads face each other in each of their home venues.  In April 2013, Ohio hosted Steel City and got off to a quick 102-9 start.  An amazing comeback by the Steel Hurtin in the second period cut the deficit to only 23 points, but Ohio held strong to secure a 246-162 victory.  Then in August, Ohio traveled to Pittsburgh and won a nail-biter 184-179.  Historically, Ohio and Steel City have always played each other well, and with an average margin of victory only being 39 points, this next matchup is bound to follow in its footsteps. (20) Ohio and Cincinnati Continue In-State Rivalry

Only 120 miles separate their two cities, but the Ohio Roller Girls and the Cincinnati Rollergirls have not taken the track against one another since October 2011.  A long-standing rivalry between these two squads has limited the number of times they have met.  In fact, since the Cincinnati league formed back in 2007, these two teams have only met five times.  Historically, the Cincinnati Black Sheep are 4-1 against Ohio, with their last victory coming against OHRG at the 2011 North Central Playoffs, 168-82.  Since then, however, Ohio and Cincinnati have seen their programs go in opposite directions.    A change in league structure for Ohio led to more bouts with fewer skaters in the league.  The focus on the team has enabled OHRG to make not only regional, but international, playoffs for the last three seasons.  This dedication culminated in 2013 when they not only qualified for the WFTDA Championship tournament, but were victorious in their opening round bout against Rat City (Seattle, WA).  Ohio has qualified once again for post-season play this year, with an upcoming bout against the Jacksonville Roller Girls in September.  Conversely, the Black Sheep of Cincinnati have fallen from a top 40 team eleven months

(20) OHIO AND (27) ARCH RIVAL TO CLASH IN ST. LOUIS

On August 9th, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will once again hit the road to take on a familiar foe, the (27) Arch Rival Roller Girls in St. Louis, Missouri.  OHRG and Arch Rival have one of the fiercest rivalries in the WFTDA over the past few years, as they have consistently faced each other during the regular season as well as playoffs.  They first met back in St. Louis in 2011, when Arch Rival was victorious 147-69.  Arch Rival then visited Columbus for a closed hangover bout in 2012 when OHRG took the victory 168-115.  Later that year, Ohio upset Arch Rival at the North Central Playoffs 142-132.  Arch again found their winning ways during the 2013 regular season when they defeated Ohio in St. Louis 179-108… but it was the OHRG who got the last laugh at the Division One Playoffs where they again upset ARRG 218-166. Both Ohio and Arch Rival have experienced roster changes during the off season and have dealt with different lineups throughout the season, but both essentially remain the same teams that the other knows extremely well.  Playing five bouts over three years has allowed these teams to become very familiar with the other’s

(22) OHIO WELCOMES BUFFALO’S (48) QUEEN CITY ROLLER GIRLS

GET TICKETS TO TOMORROW'S BOUT HERE. The (22) Ohio Roller Girls had something this past week that they haven’t had in quite a while… a week off.  Coming off a three bout stint in Boston two weeks ago, OHRG will be back within the friendly confines of the Lausche Building as they welcome in Buffalo’s Queen City Roller Girls this Saturday evening.  Our Columbus squad returned from Massachusetts with a 2-1 weekend record as they upset (11) Boston 223-190, defeated New Hampshire 208-100, and nearly upset (12) Montreal 196-164 (note: following last weekend, the new rankings were released and Boston and Montreal are now ranked #17 and #16 respectively).  Overall, the Ohio Roller Girls All Stars are 7-5 in 2014. The Queen City Roller Girls will make the 5.5 hour drive to Columbus this weekend before they too enter the final stretch of their 2014 season.  The Lake Effect Furies will also have a little revenge on their minds, as they were defeated by the Ohio Roller Girls last year in Toronto at the Quad City Chaos tournament, 211-125.  Although the point differential at the end of that bout was 86 points, Queen City trailed Ohio by only 24 points halfway through

OHIO TRAVELS TO BOSTON FOR THREE BOUTS IN 30 HOURS

Fresh off a 1-1 weekend in Milwaukee, the Ohio Roller Girls will have to do a quick load of laundry and get back on the road as they travel to Boston, MA, this weekend for three bouts against three different teams over a thirty hour time span.  What would seem like a crazy schedule for most teams is, well, even out of the ordinary for a team like Ohio, who typically plays up to twenty bouts a season.  Including the trip to BrewHaHa last weekend,  OHRG will have logged five bouts and 2,450 miles over seven days when they finish their road trip on Sunday afternoon.  On the docket for the Columbus squad, a public bout against the (11) Boston Derby Dames’ Boston Massacre on Saturday and two private hangover bouts against (12) Montreal’s New Skids On The Block and (32) New Hampshire’s Skate Free or Die! All Stars on Sunday morning. Ohio’s first opponent this weekend is the Boston Derby Dames.  Currently ranked #11 in the world, Boston sits at 0-2 in sanctioned play this season.  Their two losses came at the hands of (12) Montreal (239-162) and Baltimore’s (17) Charm City Roller Girls (209-170).  A contender to go

OHIO AND GANG GREEN TRAVEL FOR MIDWEST BREWHAHA

This weekend, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to participate in the annual Midwest BrewHaHa invitational featuring WFTDA sanctioned play, non-sanctioned play, and men’s derby.  This year will mark Ohio’s fifth consecutive season participating in the event, where the OHRG have amassed a 5-3 record.  This year, Ohio will lace their skates twice over the three day event against very formidable foes, (30) Madison's (WI) Dairyland Dolls and (9) Chicago's Windy City Rollers. The Ohio Roller Girls will first play the Dairyland Dolls on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.  Historically, these two teams have always played very tough, but Ohio has the overall advantage in the win column, 2-0, over Madison.  They last played each other in 2012 in Madison, when Ohio escaped with a 26 point victory, 154-128.  Prior to that dust-up, Ohio eliminated Madison at the 2011 North Central Region Playoffs, 138-118. This season, the Dairyland Dolls have accumulated a 2-2 record thus far.  They opened their season with an impressive 72 point victory over BrewHaHa hosts, the Brewcity Bruisers, and then suffered two consecutive losses to Jacksonville and Arch Rival.  Madison then stunned Naptown in a hangover bout 162-142 to pull their overall record to

(20) Ohio Hosts (10) Atlanta this Saturday for Mother’s Day Melee

This Mother’s Day weekend, roller derby fans in Columbus will be treated to an exciting bout featuring two squads that made it to last season’s WFTDA World Championship tournament.  Both the (20) Ohio Roller Girls and the (10) Atlanta Rollergirls occupied two of the twelve spots at Champs, having played their way through stiff competition at separate Division 1 Playoff locations.  Both squads had such a good showing at Champs that they were both victorious in their opening round bouts with Ohio defeating Rat City (Seattle), and Atlanta defeating London (UK).   The Ohio Roller Girls are still feeling the sting of a close loss at Naptown (Indianapolis) last weekend where they fell to the Tornado Sirens 163-140.  The defeat added a second tally in the loss column for the OHRG and pushed their overall 2014 record to 4-2.  The Naptown bout also kick-started a grueling six week endurance test in which the Ohio Roller Girls will play a total of seven bouts, five of which will be against teams ranked above them.  Their bout against Atlanta will be their toughest to date this season, with their schedule only getting harder from here on out.  Whereas OHRG has been playing consistently since

#20 OHIO TRAVELS TO #11 NAPTOWN IN I-70 BATTLE

Playing in their sixth bout of the season, the #20 Ohio Roller Girls will travel west along I-70 this weekend as they take on traditional powerhouse #11 Naptown Roller Girls (Indianapolis).  Ohio will enter the contest with a 4-1 record under their collective belt as they have posted victories against Nashville (194-128), Bleeding Heartland (291-93), Toronto (185-172), and Tri-City (225-142).  Their lone defeat came at Quad City Chaos when they fell to Montreal. The Naptown Tornado Sirens have had an eerily similar season thus far in 2014.  The Tornado Sirens are also 4-1 in sanctioned play with victories over Bleeding Heartland (295-148), Cincinnati (238-116), New Hampshire (182-140), and Tri-City (325-88).  Their lone defeat was to the Madison Dairyland Dolls in a hangover bout, 142-162.  Ohio and Naptown appear to be similar when taking a look at their shared opponents so far this season.  Naptown defeated Bleeding Heartland by 147 points, whereas Ohio defeated Bleeding Heartland by 198 points.  On the other hand, Ohio only defeated Tri-City by 83, whereas Naptown was victorious over the team from Kitchener Ontario by 237.  Simply by looking at how they’ve progressed over their first five bouts, it’s easy to see that Naptown is a team
