OHIO TOPPLES STEEL CITY

Hitting the road together for the first time in 2019, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars and Gang Green hopped across the Ohio River to Pittsburgh for a pair of scrappy, hard-fought games against longtime opponents Steel City Roller Derby, scratching out late-game victories in both matchups. ALL STARS SQUEAK PAST STEEL HURTIN’, 181-167 Unceasing back-and-forth battle and a total of ten lead changes kept both teams on their toes for the entire sixty minutes of gameplay, but the final moments saw Ohio narrowly edging out their opponents. Catch Mikachu nicked the first point of the contest; two lead changes followed in as many jams, with Jane, Literally squeezing out of the pack for a 9-0 gain as a Steel Hurtin’ blocker picked up the first pack penalty. After swapping scoring passes for several minutes, Banana Jamma tied the score at 18-all despite strong triangulation from the Ohio defense; River Kyx then tipped the scales in favor of the home squad. An Old Rivalry Revived

Making a quick jaunt to Pennsylvania during a mid-season lull in home games, Ohio Roller Derby will face off against long-time rivals Steel City Roller Derby (Pittsburgh, PA) on Saturday, May 18th at the Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena in Cheswick, PA. Teams of all levels from the two leagues have clashed numerous times over the past decade, with Ohio maintaining a winning average in all configurations. (84) Steel Hurtin’ played their second WFTDA-sanctioned game ever against the All Stars in December 2007 and have rematched with them six times since, including once at WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs in 2014. Their most recent meeting at the now-defunct Romp n’ Roll in Glenshaw in August 2015 saw the Steel Hurtin’ pull out a decisive 249-117 victory, but both charter rosters have undergone significant change since. The Hurtin’ challenged themselves in 2018, prioritizing road games and traveling to the United Kingdom for the Euro Clash tournament; the experience served them well, as they have slowly but steadily climbed the WFTDA rankings over the past year. (51) Ohio Ready to Duel with (58) Dub City

Returning to Columbus after a challenging tournament weekend in Canada, Ohio Roller Derby will make new friends and renew a long-time rivalry as they welcome teams from Dub City Roller Derby (West Palm Beach, FL) and Steel City Roller Derby (Pittsburgh, PA) for the second-to-last home doubleheader of the 2018 season on Saturday, June 9th. A full member league of the WFTDA since the end of 2014, (58) Dub City had a busy and successful season last year, playing half of their sanctioned games at the Clover Cup and Mayday Mayhem tournaments and going 8-2 overall. While The Resistance have scaled back their travel for 2018, only scheduling four sanctioned games, their opponents are no less challenging. Currently 0-2, their season kicked off in late March with a 122-166 loss to Columbia Roller Derby at the 2018 Franky Panky invitational. Over Memorial Day weekend, Dub City took a home track loss to Sailor City Rollers (Buenos Aires, Argentina), who stopped in Florida on their way to the 2018 Besterns tournament in Colorado. OHIO SPLITS GAMES AT STEEL CITY

For their last travel game of the 2015 regular season, the (34) Ohio Roller Girls ventured east to Pittsburgh for a double header against (29) Steel City Roller Derby.   GANG GREEN BOLTS PAST STEEL BEAMERS, 225-166 “Small but mighty” was truly the theme of the evening for a short-rostered Gang Green, who were not initially predicted to take the victory over SCRD's Steel Beamers, but arrived in Pennsylvania determined to upset that prognosis just as they did in Nashville last month. The Beamers were able to put up 3 points in the first jam for a quick lead--the only time they would have it during the contest. Gang Green's HellionBOI answered with a 15-point power jam as SCRD's jammer left the track on a forearm penalty, and another power jam in jam 5 allowed her to widen the Ohio lead to 41-5. A string of jammer penalties provided plenty of opportunity for both teams to try to score unopposed, but tough defense kept gains low until a double track cut call on SCRD's Inga Kneeher allowed Karmabal Lectur to put up 20 unanswered points for Gang Green. Gang Green Collapses Pittsburgh’s Steel Beamers 174-127

After watching the Ohio Roller Girls charter team take down the Steel Hurtin’ 216-191, Gang Green did everything they could to make sure their bout against Pittsburgh’s reserve squad wouldn’t be as close.  It’s always a tough match when Steel City and Ohio meet, and Gang Green quickly found themselves in a battle that made the several hundred spectators in attendance cheer for the efforts put forth by everyone involved.  The first ten jams of the contest went back and forth between Gang Green and the Steel Beamers.  Jams lasted an average of one minute, and just ten minutes into the bout, the two reserve squads exchanged leads a total of five times.  With 19:15 remaining in the first period, Gang Green clung to a slim 24-17 lead.    On the period’s eleventh jam, Gang Green’s Sarah Bruce rattled off a 20-0 power jam with Shrinking Violet in the penalty box for a high block.  Two jams later, it was Val Holla knocking Hot Lips Bruise’ihan out of bounds, allowing HellionBOI the opportunity to get lead and secure a 2-0 jam.  Hellion’s jam took Gang Green’s lead to 54-18.  Clean play by both squads over the next ten jams didn’t yield

(28) STEEL CITY TO VISIT COLUMBUS FOR SEASON FINALE

This weekend, the (20) Ohio Roller Girls will skate in their final home bout this season as they welcome in Pittsburgh’s (28) Steel City Roller Derby.  A long-standing rivalry continues as these teams will meet for the fifth time, and the third time in the last year and a half.  Ohio and Steel City first met back in 2007 when Ohio was victorious 134-131, but Steel City got their revenge two years later, 125-98.  Then, a four year hiatus, mainly due to regional affiliation, kept these two teams apart.  The battle was renewed last season as a scheduled home-and-home series saw these squads face each other in each of their home venues.  In April 2013, Ohio hosted Steel City and got off to a quick 102-9 start.  An amazing comeback by the Steel Hurtin in the second period cut the deficit to only 23 points, but Ohio held strong to secure a 246-162 victory.  Then in August, Ohio traveled to Pittsburgh and won a nail-biter 184-179.  Historically, Ohio and Steel City have always played each other well, and with an average margin of victory only being 39 points, this next matchup is bound to follow in its footsteps.
