OHIO DOMINATES AT PUT UP YOUR TOQUES INVITATIONAL

While multi-game tournament weekends already present a unique set of obstacles - increased fatigue, unfamiliar track surfaces, special attention to hydration and nutrition, playing earlier or later in the day than usual - adding international travel into the equation can create extra hurdles, particularly for U.S. teams that don’t necessarily do so often. Undaunted by any of the challenges presented, the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars crossed the northern border and skated their way to three decisive victories in less than 48 hours. LAST JAM UPSET OF ORANGEVILLE, 191-183 Ohio opened the tournament with a back-and-forth battle against (69) Orangeville, swapping lead ten times and eking out a last-jam victory. An initial power jam allowed Ohio to control momentum and gain small handfuls of points over the first five minutes of play before Orangeville forced the first lead change in jam 5, 12-16. BrussKnuckles fired back in jam 7, spinning through the pack to pick up 18 points and boost Ohio to a narrow 30-28 lead. A tug-of-war for lead ensued; Birch Slap quickly juked through the pack and avoided jammer defense for 7 uncontested points, but a 4-1 pack advantage for Orangeville in the following jam left little resistance against Gruesome Gracie

International Travel Ahead!

Ramping up for a jam-packed schedule over the next month, Ohio Roller Derby will hit the road for the first time in 2019 as the All Stars travel north to participate in Canada’s longest-running active WFTDA invitational event, Put Up Your Toques. Hosted by Tri-City Roller Derby, the tournament will take place over the first weekend in May at the RIM Park in Waterloo, Ontario, providing internationally competitive opportunities for WFTDA charter teams from across the province and the eastern United States. Participating teams include Brandywine Roller Derby (Downingtown, PA), Orangeville Roller Girls (Orangeville, ON, CA), Ottawa Valley Roller Derby (Ottawa, ON, CA), Roc City Roller Derby (Rochester, NY), Royal City Royal Derby (Guelph, ON, CA), and Toronto Roller Derby (Toronto, ON, CA) in addition to Ohio and Tri-City. (66) Ohio will open the tournament weekend at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 4th against (69) Orangeville Roller Girls, a previously untested opponent. Orangeville is currently 1-4 for the season, suffering an early-season loss to Roc City as well as later games to perennial powerhouses Queen City Roller Derby, Columbia Roller Derby, and Boston Roller Derby, but eking out a narrow victory over the Charlottesville Derby Dames. Ohio Roller Derby 2019 Season Preview

After a postseason trip to the North America East Continental Cup last August and a fun-filled season of intraleague play that culminated in the revival of the fan-favorite Skatemare Before Christmas game, Ohio Roller Derby enjoyed a well-deserved off-season. Now, with renewed minds and increased strength, they return once more to their home track at the Ohio Expo Center in 2019, gearing up for their fourteenth year of competition against old rivals and new challengers alike. Twelve skaters from the 2018 playoffs roster return to the All Stars roster this season: Amy Spears (captain), Betty T. KayO, Bigg Rigg, Birch Slap, BrussKnuckles, Kelsey Khaos, KloverKill, Pain Train, and Vyles, as well as crossover skaters Belle A. Trix, Smash Panda (formerly known as Jane Goodfall), and TactiGal. After spending last season coaching, Chainsaw rejoins the pack, and recent transfer Catch Mikachu will provide additional versatility in the jammer pool. New to All Stars but certainly not to the track, Baby Kakes, Jane, Literally, Lara Del Rage, Jonny No, and Oxford Coma join in pulling double duty for both the A and B squads. The Season Continues for OHRD!

After a whirlwind four months of games both here in Columbus and on the road, Ohio Roller Derby has wrapped up their regular competitive season. Now, the All Stars turn their attention to postseason play after receiving an invitation to the first-ever North America - East WFTDA Continental Cup. Changes to the WFTDA Playoffs model for 2018 set a higher bar for teams hoping to be ranked in Division 1 (top 28 teams worldwide, down from top 40 in 2017) and eliminated Division 2 Playoffs, but assigned all teams to regions based on their location and created three Continental Cups for teams ranked below the new Division 1 cutoff. The European Cup will welcome the top 8 teams from the Europe and Africa regions; the North America - West Cup, the top 12 from the North America - West and Asia Pacific regions; and the North America - East Cup, the top 12 from the South America and North America - East regions. A record number of teams declining invitations to these tournaments - many due to high cost of international travel - allowed for extended invitations to several teams who had narrowly missed the initial cutoffs for Division 1 Playoffs

OHIO GAINS EXPERIENCE IN INTERNATIONAL PLAY AT ROYAL BRAWL

While short rosters proved an extra hurdle in Ohio’s path to victory over Memorial Day weekend, both the All Stars and Gang Green challenged themselves and found other successes on the track at the Royal Brawl invitational in Guelph, ON, Canada. Endurance training paid off as skaters played in as many as five games over two days, and utilizing newer talent on both teams allowed for creativity in shifting roles and pack dynamics. SATURDAY: ROYAL CITY AND E-VILLE Gang Green opened the action at the Victoria Road Recreation Centre on Saturday morning against the Royal City Rum Rollers (Guelph, ON, CA). While obtaining lead less often than they would have liked in the first half, Ohio jammers chased down their opponents, forcing short jams and quick call offs. Birch Slap picked up the first lead of the game, but double jammer penalties and a subsequent power start allowed the Royal City B team to quickly open a 32-point lead. Avocado ToeStop, Kegel Scout, and Belle A. Trix clumped up to contain Harley Twin while Just Jane grabbed lead status and the first four points for Gang Green. We’re off to Canada!

For the first time in four years, Ohio Roller Derby will travel internationally for tournament play, heading to Canada over Memorial Day weekend for the first annual Royal Brawl Invitational. One of 22 WFTDA Recognized Tournaments occurring this year, the three-day event will take place in Guelph, ON, Canada, presenting an opportunity for both A- and B-level competition for teams from across Canada and the northern United States. In addition to Ohio and hosts Royal City Roller Derby, participants include E-Ville Roller Derby (Edmonton, AB, Canada), Ithaca League of Women Rollers (Ithaca, NY), North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN), Ottawa Valley Roller Derby (Ottawa, ON, Canada), Queen City Roller Girls (Buffalo, NY), Toronto Roller Derby (Toronto, ON, Canada), and Tri-City Roller Derby (Kitchener, ON, Canada). The Ohio All Stars will play three sanctioned games over two days, starting with a first-time bout against E-Ville on Saturday afternoon before rematching against prior opponents Royal City that evening and North Star on Sunday. Like Ohio, (47) E-Ville earned a spot at the 2017 WFTDA D2 Playoffs & Championships last August, but the two teams did not meet on the track. OHIO SPLITS GAMES AGAINST TRI-CITY

Upholding a near-annual tradition, Ohio Roller Derby hosted Tri-City Roller Derby for the third year running. The All Stars held a 4-0 record over the skaters from Kitchener, Ontario, and were victorious again, improving to a 5-1 season record. In the second game of the night, Gang Green looked to bolster their 2-1 record over TCRD’s Plan B, but ultimately fell short in their first loss of the season. (41) OHIO STORMS PAST (47) TRI-CITY THUNDER, 258-129 From the first whistle of the game, the Ohio All Stars held a firm grip on the lead over the Tri-City Thunder, matching points with or outscoring the Canadian team in 74% of jams. Lora “Outa My” Wayman, The Smacktivist , and Bigg Rigg gave Ohio big boosts with eleven double-digit jams, and clean gameplay on both sides meant full packs, brawny defense, and tough battles for lead jammer status. Tri-City’s defense held The Smacktivist for 35 seconds in the first jam before they got out for a quick 4 points, and with the first penalty of the game assessed to the TCRD jammer in jam 4, they posted 23 unanswered points to give Ohio a 31-5 lead.
