What are your go to items?
That game day bag with chapstick, eye drops, sample of eucalyptus wipe, inhaler, tape, food, etc. That goes with me to the bench for every game so I have little bits of everything I might need in a pinch.
What do you keep spares of?
EVERYTHING. Someone once broke a kingpin and I had an extra in my bag. For a long time, I was the only one on my plate, so I always made sure I had all the parts on hand because I knew no one else would. I have extra knee pad caps, wristguard splints, mouthguard, toe stops, etc. I don’t want to be caught not being able to repair something on a game day.
Why do you have three wrist guards?
Your guess is as good as mine. At least it’s not like practice last week when I had 3 LEFT wrist guards. Recently I’ve been rolling around with 5 in there. Basically, I have a horrible time getting wrist guards that I like the fit of, so I just toss them all in there and wear what feels best on any given day. Clearly, I’ve lost one at some point, otherwise the odd numbers make no sense.
What do you think is an essential that belongs in most skaters bags?
Tools, and extra parts. You owe it to yourself to be able to repair your own stuff and not rely on getting lucky that someone else can. Know your equipment!
Tell us about your skates, why did you choose them?
I have spent the last couple years trying to find a boot I really love. I was fortunate to come across someone who’d ordered the wrong size in the Brooklyn Skate Company boots, and it was the right size for me, so I jumped on them. I love them. I’ve only been in them about a year, but they are really just like new, and I’ll never wear another boot without the back loops for the laces. I have also been into wearing the hardest wheels I can get away with on a given surface lately. I find being able to make obnoxious noises actually helps me remember my edges when stopping hard.
Lastly, If you were going to a deserted island and could only take one thing from your skating bag what would it be and why?
I’d like to say skates, but I’m guessing this is a sandy, unpaved desert island. So I’ll go with that crank brother’s tool. It’s really a bike tool, but I carry it because all the different attachments don’t fall off and go rolling around my bag willy-nilly. Or maybe I should take the bag itself since it holds so much!
