OHIO VICTORIOUS OVER TRI-CITY THUNDER, 225-142

This past Saturday was the third time that the Ohio Roller Girls have matched up against Tri-City Roller Derby’s Tri-City Thunder from Kitchener, Ontario. OHRG recognized early on that they had some tough opponents in players like Tri-City veterans Wylde Leigh Cyote and Fox Smoulder. As evidenced by their strong 2013 playoffs performance, Tri-City had been working hard since the two teams last saw each other, but unfortunately for the Canadian team, Ohio had been doing the same.

Right out of the gate, Ohio took the lead with The Smacktivist scoring the first two points of the game in the first jam. Ohio would continue to add a few points here and there for the majority of the first half. Ohio jammers found themselves trying to catch up to fast-moving packs with the Tri-City jammers hot on their tail.  OHRG blockers weren’t having it any easier, finding themselves fighting some tough hits and strong walls courtesy of players like Fraxxure and Aggrosaurus. Ohio managed to maintain a steady lead despite growing penalty trouble, although the persistent pack disadvantage eventually caught up to them. With about ten minutes left, Tri-City’s Ova’ Kill, who had been taking regular advantage of an undefended inside line, managed to pull a lead change while skating opposite Ohio’s Kitty Liquorbottom.  Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin worked hard to push Ova’ Kill out and back, but to little success. Tri-City was able to maintain the advantage for all of two jams before The Smacktivist pulled Ohio back into the lead.  The first half ended 99-87.

The second half started out much like the first, with a few points traded between teams.  All of this seemed like a little bit of a warm up because things changed quickly. In the fourth jam, Lora “Outa My” Wayman took the star for Ohio and quickly gained lead, coming out of the pack with a shrug as if to say “that was easy.”  With Tri-City’s jammer Freudian Whip headed to the box, Ohio saw a power jam as well as its highest scoring jam of 29 points thanks to Jesse “Ava Tarr” Fox and Ena Flash heading up some strong offense to help Wayman through the Tri-City pack.

Ohio continued to gain points against Tri-City, despite the Canadian team taking lead jammer almost half of the time.  Ena Flash was often seen playing the last line of defense against any Tri-City jammer who made it that far.  Sk8 Crime and Acid worked together to break up Tri-City’s walls, which were often well defended, holding Ohio’s jammers back for half of a jam or more at times.  Despite the hard fight put up by Tri-City Thunder, the game ended with a final score of 225-142 to Ohio.

This bout leaves Ohio 5-1 for the season thus far. Congratulations to the team MVP jammer Lora “Outa My” Wayman and blocker Zee “Loraine Acid” Gulertekin!
