After a postseason trip to the North America East Continental Cup last August and a fun-filled season of intraleague play that culminated in the revival of the fan-favorite Skatemare Before Christmas game, Ohio Roller Derby enjoyed a well-deserved off-season. Now, with renewed minds and increased strength, they return once more to their home track at the Ohio Expo Center in 2019, gearing up for their fourteenth year of competition against old rivals and new challengers alike.
Twelve skaters from the 2018 playoffs roster return to the All Stars roster this season: Amy Spears (captain), Betty T. KayO, Bigg Rigg, Birch Slap, BrussKnuckles, Kelsey Khaos, KloverKill, Pain Train, and Vyles, as well as crossover skaters Belle A. Trix, Smash Panda (formerly known as Jane Goodfall), and TactiGal. After spending last season coaching, Chainsaw rejoins the pack, and recent transfer Catch Mikachu will provide additional versatility in the jammer pool. New to All Stars but certainly not to the track, Baby Kakes, Jane, Literally, Lara Del Rage, Jonny No, and Oxford Coma join in pulling double duty for both the A and B squads. Already retaining a solid veteran core, Gang Green welcomes a robust rookie class and a few additional transfer skaters to its ranks this season. The All Stars are coached by Burnadeath and Elektra Magneto, who will also join BerMurder Triangle, Extra AF, and Amy Flowers on the Gang Green bench.
(64) Ohio Roller Derby has scheduled a vigorous and compact season for spring and early summer, playing five home bouts, a pair of away games, and two tournaments in just over three months. The season kicks off on March 23rd with their home opener against (58) Toronto Roller Derby (Toronto, ON, CA), quickly followed by a second home game against (73) Roc City Roller Derby (Rochester, NY) on April 6th.
The following month brings four weekends of derby travel; the All Stars travel north to Waterloo, Ontario for the Put Up Your Toques tournament from May 3rd-5th, joined by (80) Brandywine Roller Derby (Downingtown, PA), (68) Orangeville Roller Girls (Orangeville, ON, CA), (53) Royal City Roller Derby (Guelph, ON, CA), (76) Ottawa Valley Roller Derby (Ottawa, ON, CA), Toronto Roller Derby, Roc City Roller Derby, and tournament hosts (69) Tri-City Roller Derby.
Back in Ohio, they’ll face real life and rankings neighbor (63) Gem City Roller Derby (Dayton, OH) at home on May 11th, then head to Cincinnati the next morning for a closed game against (79) Oklahoma Victory Dolls. The following weekend will see them traveling to Pittsburgh for a long overdue rematch against (89) Steel City. As the calendar flips from May to June, they’ll hit the road to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for their seventh appearance at the long-running Midwest BrewHaHa tournament; one of the largest WFTDA-recognized tournaments, the opponent pool includes twelve all star teams from across the United States, Canada, and France, as well as competitive B-level and Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) games. Wrapping up the season at home, the All Stars will take on Brandywine Roller Derby on June 8th and Classic City Rollergirls (Athens, GA) on June 29th.
Gang Green has a full schedule, as well, with home games against the B teams of Toronto, Roc City, Gem City, Brandywine, and Classic City. They will also join the All Stars on the road, rematching against the Steel Beamers of Steel City and returning to Midwest BrewHaHa where they will face off against B squads from North Star Roller Derby (Minneapolis, MN), Brewcity Bruisers (Milwaukee, WI), and Gem City.
All of Ohio’s home games will take place at the Ohio Expo Center; the first four will be played in the Ohio Building, with the fifth in the Lausche Building. Doors open at 4 p.m.; the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars play first at 5 p.m., followed by Gang Green (typically around 7 p.m.). Season passes will be available online until March 22nd; single game tickets are available online or at the door on game days. On-site parking is $5 per car (cash only). Accessible seating available, as well as bleacher, chair, and trackside floor seating (18+ only); outside seating is prohibited in the Ohio Building. Food, beverages, beer, and OHRD merchandise will be available for purchase.
Thank you for your continued support of Ohio Roller Derby, and we’ll see you trackside!
