Kirsten

KirstenHow did you get into derby?

I watched a rec league scrimmage one day and immediately fell in love. I can’t skate, but wanted to somehow be involved anyway. I think it was only a couple of weeks later that I started to learn how to be a non-skating official.

Do you have any other hobbies?

What hobbies DON’T I have? I especially love playing the violin, knitting, and reading.

What is your favorite derby memory thus far?

Being there when OHRG made champs in 2013 was amazing. I still get chills thinking about it.

Who inspires you?

My grandmother. She’s in her 90s and is just incredible. I want to be like her as I get older: still super active, able to do some traveling, and sharp as ever. She puts people 30 years younger to shame.

How/why did you pick your derby name?

People have tried to come up with a fun derby name for me since I started. I still laugh at some of the good ones, but none of them really felt right. My real name suits me just fine.

How has derby impacted your life?

Derby has been amazing. I have gotten to travel to places I never thought I would. I’ve met so many amazing people. On the personal side of things, it’s also helped me challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone in a lot of ways. It’s been a great ride so far!
