#87 Lei D. Kickash

Number of years playing derby:
2018 is my first year.

How did you get into derby?
Saw a banked track derby show on TV in college and thought those women were so B.A.!

What are your other hobbies?
Running, biking, swimming, lifting, sewing, making myself laugh, and making lists… I love lists.

Who inspires you?
Mostly my Mom, but really anyone that faces danger and adversity and doesn’t back down, but pushes forward. Also Batman because he’s just a normal dude that stands up for what he feels is right and has a couple extra bucks to blow on trinkets and whatnots.

What is your sports background?
Marching band. You don’t know pain until you’ve held cymbals upright for 4 hrs a day and been run down by a bass drum multiple times. Sport.

How/why did you pick your derby name?
Lei as an homage to my Tutu and Hawaiian ancestry. Kickash because I am. D. because it makes things interesting.

Do you have any pre- or post-bout rituals?
Coffee.

Do you have a favorite or signature derby move?
Getting back up when I fall. Fingers intact is the trick.

How has derby impacted your life?
I’ve found a great group of people that make me feel like I belong. I have a much greater sense of empowerment and those moments I don’t, there are a lot of B.A. quad kin to pick me back up. I love this crew!

Any other fun facts about yourself?
Everything… I have a list that says so.
