Number of years playing derby
Somehow it’s been four years already!
How did you get into derby?
A friend wanted to check out a practice with our local team, and asked me to go along for moral support; after watching, I really wanted to give it a shot despite not having skated since junior high & never being great at it in the first place. I went to my first practice the next week, strapped on borrowed pads & rental skates, and divided my time between hugging the wall & falling down every time someone skated near me. I bought skates the week after that and continued to hug walls & fall down for months, but I was hooked. After a little over two years with my first team, I moved to Columbus & tried out for OHRG in the fall of 2014.
Do you have any other hobbies?
Kayaking, birdwatching, gaming, writing, cooking, and many crafty endeavors.
What is your sports background?
Many failed attempts at soccer, basketball, volleyball, and gym class as a kid; I also ran cross country in junior high & high school, but I was always one of the slowest runners.
Do you have a favorite or signature derby move?
If you count the infamous story of how I got a concussion in my very first game…
How has derby impacted your life?
There’s really no part it hasn’t affected. I had long since given up on sports, and stuck to things I knew I was good at. Derby is the first thing in my life that I’ve been absolutely terrible at & kept doing anyway. It’s completely changed the way I think about myself. It’s also provided community support in some pretty tough times, helped me find friendship in a new place, given me opportunities to travel, and taught me to face my fears & challenge my limits.
Any other fun facts about yourself?
I was adopted by a one-eyed stray cat who now rules my life.
