Returning to Columbus after a challenging tournament weekend in Canada, Ohio Roller Derby will make new friends and renew a long-time rivalry as they welcome teams from Dub City Roller Derby (West Palm Beach, FL) and Steel City Roller Derby (Pittsburgh, PA) for the second-to-last home doubleheader of the 2018 season on Saturday, June 9th.
A full member league of the WFTDA since the end of 2014, (58) Dub City had a busy and successful season last year, playing half of their sanctioned games at the Clover Cup and Mayday Mayhem tournaments and going 8-2 overall. While The Resistance have scaled back their travel for 2018, only scheduling four sanctioned games, their opponents are no less challenging. Currently 0-2, their season kicked off in late March with a 122-166 loss to Columbia Roller Derby at the 2018 Franky Panky invitational. Over Memorial Day weekend, Dub City took a home track loss to Sailor City Rollers (Buenos Aires, Argentina), who stopped in Florida on their way to the 2018 Besterns tournament in Colorado. The Resistance will make equally wise use of their trip north, playing the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars for the first time on Saturday before making the drive down to Dayton for a next-day game against Gem City Roller Derby. Dub City will end their season back at home with an unsanctioned game against the Tampa Roller Derby B team in July.
Following the charter-level game, Gang Green will take the track against long-time opponents the Steel Beamers of Steel City Roller Derby. Then known as the B-Unit, the Steel City B team was one of Gang Green’s earliest competitors back in 2009; while the Pittsburgh squad won both that game and their second meeting in early 2013, Gang Green posted increasingly decisive victories the next 3 times they faced one another. Turnover on both teams since their last match up in 2015 will mean a relatively fresh experience despite their history, and an exciting renewal of competitive spirit.
Doors open to the public at 4 p.m.; the Ohio Roller Derby All Stars take the track against the Dub City Roller Derby Resistance at 5 p.m., followed by Gang Green versus the Steel City Roller Derby Steel Beamers around 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at ohiorollerderby.com/tickets through Friday, June 8th, or at the door on Saturday. Be sure to arrive early for the best seats, visit the OHRD merch table to pick up limited edition Pride gear, and don’t miss a minute of the hard-hitting action! We’ll see you there!
