How did you get into derby?
I grew up skating and I love competitive sports. Add in full contact, and how could I not get into derby?
Do you have other hobbies?
Too many: photography, baking, dress making, gardening – I really enjoy making things.
Who inspires you?
I am eternally inspired by the tenacity of the human spirit in general.
What is your sports background?
I played everything I could get into. I inherited a mean competitive streak from my mother and a love of playful sport from my father.
How did you pick your derby name?
I didn’t, my husband did. I couldn’t think of a good name at the time, so I enlisted his help. He thought of a whole list of personalized names that I never would have come up with. I almost went with BiPolar Bear because it made me laugh, but Texas Chainsaw Sasskicker was just too perfect… I eventually changed it to Chainsaw since that’s how my teammates refer to me on the track.
Do you have any pre or post bout rituals?
I like to run around like a chicken with its head cut off making sure that every thing is in place for the bout. Keeps my mind off the fact that I have to eventually play in front of hundreds of people!
Do you have a favorite or signature derby move?
I don’t, unless you count being able to tear every ligament in my knee in one fell swoop as a “signature” move.
How has derby impacted your life?
Aside from the literal impact of derby on my life, it extends a piece of my youth into my adulthood (competitive sports)…which I find really invigorating. The people I skate with are all incredible, and despite the major time commitment and risk of injury, I know I won’t look back on this time with any regrets.
